The Genius of Dexter’s Laboratory

  • Dexter's Laboratory might be the reason some of your favorite animated shows exist. Some of the best Dexter's Lab episodes are still referenced in popular culture today and there's a good reason for that. Cartoon Network made out well with their first fully animated original show and Genndy Tartakovsky created something special. Dexter's Laboratory knew something far too many shows at the time didn't, and in turn, it reshaped careers and in some ways, a lot of the television space with its success.

      @braden7180 it was actually, all cartoon network shows we all grew up with love and remember from our childhood(HB not included) are actually very late 90s shows, some even early 2000s, ducktales basically kickstarted the tv animation renaisance and for years disney was the only ones making amazing animated shows, the only other good shows at that time was rugrats and ren and stimpy other than disney and nicks original 2 shows, 90s cartoons were absolute garbage for years until about 1995 when both CN and nick began to really take this seriously

    What I love about Dexter is that it doesn't hand out funny lines for a few laughs but has layers of witty and thought out substance which you can break through on your own. In the Hanna barbera Era, cartoons were basically animated sitcoms with funny dialogue. It had its own charm but this new Era brought power puff girls, Foster's home for imaginary friends, codename knd and so many more cartoons that trusted that their audience are smart and can enjoy whatever abstract and absurd the idea can be.

  • @JioFreedOfOphan
    @JioFreedOfOphan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +74

    Perhaps the one of the funniest things I've ever witnessed from the show came from the episode when Dexter ordered and consumed the biggest burrito I've ever seen in a cartoon. He spent the rest of the episode dreading his demise before ultimately accepting the inevitable and settled his affairs.
    He goes to his parents to give them the grim news and lets out one of the largest, loudest, most obnoxious farts in all of cartoon history. (Seth MacFarlane eat your heart out) Then, when the last echo fades away, we see Dexter standing in place, red as a radish with embarrassment and the family television blasted into the wall.
    To this day, I still die with laughter every time I watch it again. What a wonderful show Dexter's Laboratory was.

      So true, What A Cartoon and Dexter's Laboratory were the foundations that Cartoon Network built it's empire of great Cartoons. It's true that before this, Cartoon Network was full of reruns of much older cartoons mostly from the 60s and 70s with no original content. Then in 1995/96 Dexter was born along with many other cartoons. What A Cartoon had many different cartoons under it's belt featuring one or two cartoons from each individual creator. Whilst shows like Johnny Bravo, Powerpuff Girls, etc managed to get their own shows with more episodes, others fell under the radar. However, Seth McFarlane created Larry & Steve which was the foundation of Family Guy. Larry & Steve only had 1 episode but without Larry & Steve, the'd be no Family Guy, American Dad or Cleveland Show and No Dexter would mean no Larry & Steve.
      Without What A Cartoon, Cartoon Network would still be showing the reruns it started off with which have now long since transfered to Boomerang.

    Looking back, this show was really depressing given how many times Dexter got screwed over. Although, something that bothered me as a kid that still bothers me today is how did his parents never find out about his lab given its size, power needed, and crazy inventions around the house?

    • @michaelstrong5383
      @michaelstrong5383 4 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Well, the show clearly illustrates that his parents are oblivious in general, so them not finding out about his lab makes sense.

    Dexter was always one of my favorite CN shows, especially of the early era. I think it and Space Ghost Coast to Coast helped set CN apart from the competition and gave them their own vibe. The show itself was always a fun ride with a lot more cinematic stylization than you wouldn't see from most other shows. Even now, there are still a ton of episodes that I remember (dodgeball, fishing, clues, back of the bus, star trek convention, were-clown, etc). While I wouldn't say that it was the first show of the 90s to do the "two-levels of humor" thing, as Animaniacs, Rocko, and even Rugrats all did the same before Dex (even Ren and Stimpy in their own way), but it is definitely a charm of the show. While Samurai Jack is still my favorite of Genndy's so far, Dexter is still definitely up there.

    Oh finally Dexter's lab! My all time favorite. Why? I had to wait until 3pm to watch an hour or two of Looney Toons in TNT. When my father came home one day and told me that there was a new channel that was 24/7 cartoons, that was the most exciting news I have ever heard. Then after a few years of watching Hana-Barbara's masterpieces, Dexter appeared. And I identified with him 100% since I am scientifically inclined, had an annoying sister and always wanted my own lab. I was the real life Dexter in my mind. Suddenly I was not alone, at last someone else understood. I had to wait a very long time to discover who was the legendary Genndy Tartakovsky that was always in the credits of my favorite toons. I also waited with hope that someday Dexter could be back. I'm still hoping it does in some way. So of you are reading this Genndy, please bring back Dexter

      It’s an old style of cartoon one that was basically followed for a long time. If you see any of the flinstones , jetsons or older scooby doo you’ll get a general idea of the art style. Basically Hannah barbara were the ogs next to looney tunes of course

    • @papabumba478
      @papabumba478 4 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      In short, Hanna and Barbera started making cartoons for TV syndication, which at the time time was incredibly rare to unheard of. It basically meant they had to make a new episode every week in a time when animations were incredibly slow to make. So they started using a method called Limited Animation. They limited the amounts they had to draw by making the movements quick, and repeating backgrounds. Examples would be characters moving quickly are just blurs (don’t have to animate the initial movement), and why most of their main characters had a neck item. This way they could move the head and use it to talk, whilst keeping the rest of the body still.
      They were incredibly successful, but it also became an issue. They needed to keep making more and more, and the demand was overwhelming it caused them to have many shows that were clearly rehashes of other popular shows (popular shows like Scooby, was followed by 10s of detective shows with an oddball mascot, Flintsones followed by other family sitcoms in different eras, Roman, Future etc), bad animation or voice overs, characters being copy pasted, exactly the same voices for different characters, and overall just a huge dip in quality. They still had some goldies (Jetsons for example), but it was an issue. Eventually they came out of the dip and Cartoon Network bought their back catalogue and hired them to help oversee/make newer cartoons for example Powerpuff Girls. How much influence they had at that point I have no idea though.
      I think that’s the basic premise, there’s a lot more too it, which he could make a great video about, but if you’re interested in their style just look up limited animation. Also if you want to see their crazy catalogue I recommend searching it on google. It is insane how much they worked on and you can see why they had trouble keeping up. That said they always had some great ones mixed in with the bad.
