    Do you prefer subbed or dubbed anime?
    ALSO PLEASE READ: Excuse the *SAYban*, couldn’t shake the accent! PLUS to clarify, shuki Levy was used as an alias but did exist, he was a production partner! But theres been debunking if that as well, so exclude that info altogether! On me! There are multiple examples of censorship from different dubs in the video, Sabans rules are being used for foundation, as I show in a couple frames. Had to be very careful with copyright so I tried to choose the best examples of censorship I could track down in high quality.

      I mostly prefer both sub is easy to read but due to my vision I lean a bit towards dub there are times when I have to go back when I miss something in the sub, but the sub has me pay more attention to the anime unlike dubs where I can put it on in the background and listen to it while I'm doing something else

      @@AugustoXRock the problem with censorship was that all animation was perceived as targeted toward children, so any adult topics and references were toned down or removed, instead of accepting that some animation is intended for teens or adults.
      Shows like Archer or BoJack Horseman had they came out 30 years ago, would have been completely gutted by censorship.

    • @mentalpopcorn2304
      @mentalpopcorn2304 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@jacobkudrowich dbz wasn't necessarily made for children in Japan, more teens and young adults.
      I ONLY knew young kids watching dbz as an American, as it was marketed towards children. While the censorship in dbz is pretty heavy, to say it's unecessary is blatantly wrong. Without the censorship this show wouldn't have succeeded in America as it wouldn't air on channels for kids and adults surely wouldn't care to watch animation during that time.

    Funimation didn't "bring Dragon Ball Z over to the West". Dragon Ball Z had been airing in Europe since the early 90s (the first episode aired in 1990 in France). The US didn't air it until 1996.
    Even the manga wasn't published in the US until 1998 while France was publishing it as soon as 1993.
    I know it's an easy mistake to make but it's very ethnocentric to think that the US are the ones to bring everything to the Western world. Manga and anime were popular in Europe since the 1980s and many of the most known works (Cowboy Bebop, Evangelionn etc) only made their way to the US way later.

      I only saw Z on CN in the 90s. So the American version got here first. But our national TV station (Romania) aired Dragon Ball (the first series, with kid Goku) in the very early 90s. I'm thinking 92-93. The original Japanese version with Romanian subtitles and uncensored. And DB had waaaay more sexual references than DBZ. Mind you it aired on saturday's morning cartoons. No concern for children at all. :))))

      @darklordster TVChild3 isn't entirely wrong though. The US was one of the last countries to get DBZ, and as far as I know, Funimation only deals US and I think Canada? So saying Funimation "brought Dragon Ball to the west" is a stretch.
      Over here, the original DB aired in the very early 90's thanks to InterTrack Mexico and would continue up until the very end of GT while the US was just getting OceanDub's Dragon Ball Z.
      On a semirelated note, isn't Funimation loosing the licence? Something about the voice actors doing lewd bloopers in character.

    Although I grew up with the Saban version I was always aware it was heavily edited. In fact my Uncle who was a huge fan of the show and introduced me to it use to show me clips of different scene of the original Japanese and our dub. The biggest shock for me was how Saban handle the fight with Gohan and Recomme. Two totally different shows. In fact anything to do with Gohan really was heavily edited because grown men brutally beating on a child was a huge no no. It pushed me to be determined to watch the show in all of it’s original glory.
    Imagine my shock to find out that Yamacha’s , Tien’s, and Piccolo’s bodies didn’t disappear and stayed on the battlefield the entire time or seeing Trunks cut Frieza in half and chopping him up in tiny pieces. It really was a different series that was shown to us Americans originally. The biggest problem was that Dragon Ball was presented as a kids show when it should had been presented as a young adult/adult show. Unfortunately for us at the time it first came to us originally there was no Adult Swim/Toonami to market this kind of show to the audience. Cartoon are just for kids after all. This was the mindset of our culture back then. The only thing I miss about the Saban version were the Ocean voice acting. They were truly excellent despite me learning to love the Funimation group over time.
    It’s kind of funny how Japan has changed over the years too though. They have gotten stricter on their violence with kid show which is why Super is so mild in comparison to Z. If Super came out in the 90’s very little would be change.

      The jelly doughnuts were a legit instance of censorship, but I don’t know if “Pokémon Festivals” were. Pokémon names *everything* after Pokémon. Pokémon Contests, Pokemon battling, Pokémon collecting, Pokémon triathlon, PokéStar Studios... Even in the Japanese version. Even if the festival was clearly Japanese, Pokémon likes to replace everything with the term “Pokémon” even in the Japanese version. But since it was the first season, when they were just starting out, who knows.

    • @SmittyWerbenJagermannJensen
      @SmittyWerbenJagermannJensen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Komaru Naegi then you don’t understand what censorship is.
      Censorship refers to editing something perceived as obscene. Like changing the blood, removing all mentions of death, or changing the word HELL to HFIL. That’s censorship.
      Replacing food items with other food items, calling a rice ball a jelly doughnut, and replacing Japanese text with English text (in an English dub) is hardly censorship. You know, since the reason wasn’t because Japanese references are obscene, but because it’s a dub and they need to make it more relatable for English speaking 10 year olds who’ve never been anywhere near Japan. It’s poor dubbing choices. (if you want to take that angle)

    I agree with all the points you've made about censorship and indeed it is quite absurd what became of the American version of Dragon Ball, but you really should've rephrased a ton of lines in this video.
    Dragon Ball reached the "West" many years before the American dub, uncensored too.
    Funi's american dub came out during the 00's
    Latin America and by some extent some European countries such as Italy and Spain already had their own dubs during the mid to late 90s

I know it's not the official definition of The Western world but I found that definition out just now trying to lookup what you were talking about. Schools never really covered Europe as a western country for me at least.

    • @AlexRN
      @AlexRN 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      dragonwaz bullshit. Europe is part of the west, it always has been. It’s just typical American ethnocentrism to think they’re the first to everything and that they brought it first to us all.
      And even if Europe wasn’t considered the west it would still be categorically wrong since Mexico and the rest of Latinamerica had been enjoying OG DB dubbed and uncensored since 94-95 and DBZ since 1997 (again, dubbed and uncensored and with the OG music) years before the US got DBZ on Toonami where it caught fire. Or are you going to tell me that the countries directly south of the US aren’t considered part of the west either?
      All of this could’ve been avoided if the video had said “United States” instead of “the west”.

      LikeUhVillain well “most people” are stupid and wrong then (and clearly all of them are from the US aren’t they?). Either go with North America or United States if that’s what you mean. Do not say “the west” unless you’re also talking about Europe and the rest of the Americas. It is what it is and you don’t get to ignore the meaning of a word and change it. This one time the US wasn’t at the vanguard of the cultural zeitgeist, accept it and move on, I think you’ll live.

      That's because that's the point where Toonami switched from airing this infamous Ocean dub (killer theme song though) to the vastly superior & FAR less bastardized Funimation dub (somewhat of a misnomer, as Funi was in charge of the first dub too, though they farmed out the actual voice work to Ocean).

Boy howdy, the violence! Thing was, we always got the uncensored versions directly from Japan (and great dubs too), but because they were animated, anime series were all marketed as children's entertainment.
