One of the most bizarre scenes in one of the most bizarre TV shows of all time lol, it literally came out of nowhere and made no sense. I nearly spat my tea out when I heard his voice too ☕
Almost every scene in Twin Peaks has me rolling. Like the set up is so clean, they are just waiting to start. Then the scene is so weird and pointless sometimes. This one is no exception, I really love Twin Peaks for how much it makes me laugh due to how quirky it is.
This scene is far from pointless. Also, funny? Sad, depressing, touching, sure. Twin Peaks contains a lot of humour but I don't really think that was what they were going for here.
This particular scene isn't pointless, for the record. It's when James starts to see Laura in Maddy and becomes attracted to her. When Donna also sees it, it drives a wedge between them and pushes her towards Harold. People seeing Maddy as Laura is also a recurring element - she hates it, and it ultimately leads to her death.
@@sourdough3533 Sheryl Lee became Laura in this moment. I remember being startled when I first saw it. So clever, to make us see what James was seeing.
I don't think David Lynch has ever done anything that's not quirky, that's what makes his stuff so fun to watch. And he doesn't apologize for it. And for those that hated it, he decided to troll them again, and bring it back, which was even more hysterical and brilliant. Lynch does not apologize to anyone. Not fans, critics, networks, no one.
For me I just love how turbo soap opera this show can be sometimes because it seems to me the only intention of the director here is to convey the teenage confusion of seeing his ex-girlfriend's dead ringer in the moment and forgetting about his current girlfriend right next to her. And she notices. Because it's so ridiculously melodramatic, it's how the director conveys the power of the emotion. It's SUPER corny, and his voice is well... it is what it is. But I LOVE how this show just ramped every emotion to 11. Either you can flow with it, and feel it with the characters, or it breaks immersion. No right answer, but this song is such an earworm and those looks are straight up Sergio Leone in execution. It's just teenage soapy drama though. Really low stakes, but the way it's done you get the idea that really it's the only thing that matters to all involved in the moment. Truly "Just You and I". LOL. Oh and also Donna. Poor Donna. lol
In a media world awash with Rambo and Arnold victims, fully automatic Uzis and Robocop splattering acid victims, this show introduced the body for a murder mystery and then dedicated the next HALF HOUR to the grief stricken family and friends. Lynch might be a weirdo, but this show was aces.
@kikaku2501 If your takeaway from RoboCop was the violence, I don't know what to say. It's got the tonal diversity of Twin Peaks and then some. Yes, it's got the over-the-top violence, but there's so much more to it. Pitch black comedy, social commentary on capitalism and the American media, and the heart-wrenching story of Murphy's self-discovery. It's definitely miles ahead of the rest of the action schlock put out in the '80s.
This is legitimately one of the best scenes ever. I think about it all the time. I watched it with my parents and wanted to jump out of a window. So good.
James has always been the worst twin peaks character, there’s literally not a single redeeming quality about his retarded personality and decision making. The actor didn’t help much with his monotone portrayal either
Nah low-key I like it. I like the song for sure. I'd probably tweak the vocals to snap it on key at all times, but I'm not turned off by how corny it is.
I really love this song and this scene unironically. I find it genuinely beautiful. I only realised from the comment section that people saw it as a meme
@@Stellarheim It was a spontaneous séance. Laura had taken over Maddy almost entirely at this point, the whole thing was ethereal and out of their time... Where do you think all the other instrumentation came from?
I gotta say…. This really drew into question the so-called genius of David lynch. I always figured that he was operating on a plane higher than my own, and that maybe I was missing something due to my own shortcomings. But now…..
I never laughed or cringed to this or the Laura's burial scene, never understood what is so funny about them, these scenes were beautiful to me but I guess I'm weird or something
Interesting how different people react to this scene. I laughed like hell. It's so cheesy but I enjoyed it and wouldn't like to see it omitted. Others have cringed at it and some have even loved it.
It was Lara Flynn Boyle, she was such a bad actress and made Donna so unlikable. So it was easy to not like James either, since he fell in love with her. And she was by far the worst thing about Twin Peaks. His scenes non-Donna, even then, weren't that bad. James was kinda naive at times, so he was an easy target, but hey, he's a kid... Kids can be pretty naive and stupid. And then post Donna, in season 2, they gave him an awful storyline with Evelyn, that just sucked... So it really made it easy to never warm up to James Hurley. But even in the movie, his screen time with Laura (Sherlyn Lee), was miles better than it ever was with Lara Flynn Boyle/Donna. And could see his character had a lot of potential. They never really gave the James Hurley's character much to work with in the first two seasons.
Divorce the song from the visuals - it's a perfect early '60s LA-style group harmony song (in its full length) a la The Innocents or The Fleetwoods. And now back to our regularly scheduled weirdness....
What was even the point of this?? What were they doing?? The Return implies people know about this song bc he plays it at The Roadhouse so did he make it as a musician?
Things are well, go on and get boring, and then hey, there's something amiss; that's interesting enough. Let's go with it. Now Cooper's barfing into a radio. Repeat.
just wanted to say, as a musician and singer/songwriter, this singing, the lyrics, its all horrible and every time it played throughout the series, it made it worse and worse lol i really do just hate this song so much 😂
as a musician/lyricist i actually like the chord progression. it calls back to songs in the same vein as angel baby by rosie & the originals. the hammers are fun when you learn to play it. i agree on the lyrics. david lynch is such a good writer you would imagine he would conjure up something decent, especially in a fairly lengthy and repetitive song. the singing is just humorous and insufferable, but it grew on me after the 3rd rewatch of the series lol
