1967 Tonka Gas Turbine Cab Bottom Dump Semi Truck and Trailer Restoration Number 910

  • I Purchased this 1967 Tonka Gas Turbine Cab Bottom Dump Semi Truck on eBay November 8th of 2021 for $73.92 ( $30.21 plus shipping and tax). This truck was in perfect condition for a restoration, the body had extensive rust, it was complete minus the hub caps and white wall tires, and definitely something I had been looking for. At that time I didn't realize that this truck would also turn out to be the most frustrating restoration to date. From the very start it went south. The truck came in with the windshield and plastic broken due to shipping damage. Then while tearing it apart I damaged the four tabs for the inside bottom dump panels, I later figured out the correct way to assemble it. Then during the assembly process I ended up breaking the white interior piece which cut my finger pretty badly, I ended up using UV glue to repair the interior parts well enough to finish the video and I will have to replace it once I get another interior restored for it. Overall I'm happy with how it turned out. However the process of restoring this toy on time for the video this week was definitely a challenge. Thank you for everyone's support! I hope you enjoy this truck more than I have this past two weeks.

I've watched many of your videos and the care and attention you put into your restorations is obvious. It just occurred to me that the "after" photos you include of the finished restoration(s) must conjure memories in the minds of some of your viewers, specific memories of those precious childhood moments when a gift under the Christmas tree or when a birthday gift from thoughtful parents is unwrapped and the Tonka truck is seen for the first time and the joy and elation is felt. These memories and feelings are too soon forgotten and should, instead, be held close and cherished. Childhood should never be underestimated and your work proves it.

You can tell that it was a well loved toy and spent many days outside in the dirt beside where ever it ended up being before found and sold to you. I am sure that it is just like Christmas when you find a Gem like that and then again once all the restoration is done and you are at the time of reassembling. Great job. Appreciate you sharing.

I always look forward to your restoration videos of these classic old toy vehicles. This one was no disappointment. You go the extra mile to make each restoration turn out to make the toy look better than new. I have been a subscriber now for about two years. It has been interesting to see how your techniques have evolved over time. You keep figuring out new and better ways to get the job done! I have to admit that when you first displayed this particular truck, I thought it would not be a terribly difficult one for you to do. It did present you with some challenges, but you still were able to overcome them and produce yet another masterpiece. It was so amusing when you came to focus on the original whitewalls for the tires. You flashed up on the screen that they were "rough." Rough did not even begin to address the condition of those original whitewalls! Keep on restoring and putting these videos up! There are several imitators who also put up videos here on TH-cam, but none of them produce the spectacular results that you do. For me, you are the king of the restorers!

I have watched almost every one of your videos and today my step dad watched this one with me, both of us were impressed with the all the hard hand work involved with the straightening of the metal, dad absolutely loved the powder painting and the way it came out great lol, and at the end, he said the before and after shots were not the same truck lol he thought it was two different trucks lol, he asked why you didn't paint the truck frame, fuel tank, fifth wheel and trailer sub frame in black, ( Dad is a retired truck driver) I told him that is the way it came from the Tonka factory, all in all, my dad approves of the new look, and throughout the video he kept talking about the toys he had when he was a kid way back when, Dad is 83 and he has advanced Alzheimer's with a bit of dementia and keeping him going is a ongoing challenge, thanks for sharing Chip Channel and we're looking forward to your next video

I had the same truck! I let a friend play with it....... he left it out in the driveway and his dad ran over the cab crushing it! Dad offered to replace it but instead he gave me his son's damaged Tonka mixer with the promise he would make a tandem tractor out of it....... he did and he helped me sand off the yellow painted trailer and paint it red like the converted tractor! I had the only Turbine cab tandem axle bottom dump in local existence! 1970 Los Angeles CA!

I love your restorations. My boys had Tonka toys when they were young. They were very well made out of quality materials. I wonder how many of todays toys will still be around in fifty years time and be be worth restoring? It's great that you can still get parts. Thanks for your very interesting videos and I love Breaker.

That's when everything was made in the U.S.A. and then greed came in and they had stuff made in China,Mexico and every country where they pay their workers next to nothing! And so these pieces of crap greedy individuals pay other countries next to nothing and have it shipped to United States and sale it for more than it's worth and then people wonder why there's no jobs in the states?

Fantastic! Absolutely loved the sandblasting parts. I find it soothing but at the same time can’t wait to what is under all that rust. Are there holes and if so how big or how much filler to use. While watching I have often said in my head….missed a spot! 😊 Thank you for leaving in that much sandblasting. Have a great day. Cheers!😊🇨🇦

An idea you might try so that you don't need to "crimp" the axle support might be to put a piece of plastic tubing over the pivot. Tubing like this might be available from those little balloons at the che checkout at your dollar type stores. These balloons are very small, and don't have helium in them. Another source for plastic tube would be a shoe store as these are used inside the shoes to keep the shape.
