- This film was taken in 1998 when Ion Constantin was still able to turn a traditional wooden drinking flask on his pole lathe and he may well have been the last pole lathe turner in Eastern Europe. As you will see his tools and equipment are of the simplest form which he uses with remarkable skill. Ion is not only a flask turner, he also turned domestic bowls and carved table spoons. This video was only possiable with the help of the Romanian artisan community. www.stuartking.co.uk

👏👏👏E Boze dragi vrednije ruku,nije to lako raditi,sve pohvale!👏👏👏
I loved seeing you work. It shows invaluable experience, a simple life and a loving family.
People throw away your fancy cars and shitty plastic phones... get back to what is real. Only that matters in the end.
Thank you for reminding us . I sometimes feel like we are just lost fools.
Very impressed to see how he gets by so nicely with minimal tools.
!!FRUMOS!!..
This brings back many cherished memories as a child! My immediate family & I moved to America when i was 6 years old. My parents & grandparents (who still live there) are very hard working as well. When such physical work is passed down from generation to generation, you don't see it as that but as the norm...
Just imagine how much more you would appreciate things you worked so hard for!!
I miss a lot of things there, but am extremely grateful to be in America.
Pace' & GOD BLELSS.
Cind eram copil in fiecare sat mesterii in lemn aveau atelierele aproape de fierari

Thank you so very much with showing me a traditional way of turning.. very impressive.. goes to show you that you don't need much. just keep trying.
Best wishes, Stuart Koning
Thank you, what you say is from the heart, craftsmanship should be respected,
Best wishes, Stuart King
That is an amazing skill and craftsmanship.
Thank you, I visited Bulgaria in 1990, I had a fantastic time,
Stuart King
Just amazing skills.!And the lathe is a master piece of simplicity and efficiency. Thanks for posting!
Very interesting how he cuts on the underside with a hook tool, very much like the traditional Japanese turners I've seen.
Great video, thanks for sharing it!
Cheers!
fantastic much respect for this talented men.
After watching this video I feel guilty for even having electricity! Never mind the computer and internet needed to view it!
Thank you Stuart for this perspective recalibration session...
staggering. What a craftsman.
Excellent video. Almost cried watching it. Thank you so much for taking the time to share. :)
This is the true meaning of "old school".
Talento, capacidad, trabajo y paciencia.
Maravilloso trabajo amigo!
What fantastic results with such basic resources.
This man is nothing short of a craftsman. We in the west have let such arts in workmanship die right away.
Cesking !
Folks, why you move away frome the subject of the video? Indeed, in Romania, you can still find old traditions! And yes, they are very cheap but since no one learns to do that, these objects will be invaluable in a few years! You must respect the traditions and those who still practice them! Respect! I sign: a man frome Romania!... UN ROMAN!...
lucaferat Nah, it's just junk and will always be realised as such.
Buenísimo le saludo desde Argentina!!!
great clip, lovely people and tools
Stuart Regele.
Our industrial revolution was built on the backbone, sweat and tears of the village craftsman, we must respect the artisan,
Stuart King

Valioso trabajo artesanal. Un verdadero patrimonio.

Amigo te felicito eres un fenómeno abrazos atte. Desde Alerce puerto montt chile
amazing craftsman showing an almost lost art. wonder how much the finished flask sold for.
Thank you,
Stuart King
I wonder if Ino inspired any of the young people helping him in the video to take up the art themselves. Maybe he isn't the last pole turner in eastern Europe after all! 8^)
gee fun for the whole family I would have never thought thanks you tuber
Now I am prouder of my country!
Lovely stuff Stewart.
Bertie.
Beautiful to watch!
Wow. Right back to brass tacks. Fantastic. There are similar tools on the market that are 'modern' and 'special' and they charge an arm and a leg. Ha! Bodgers and their kindred spirits FTW.
Hello forhobby,
loved it.
John Drew
Thanks alot for uploading this!
in termeni populari aia se numeste PLOSCA si in ea se tin doar bauturi tari. in trecut inainte de o nunta se mergea cu plosca de tuica si cu lautarii din casa in casa si se chemau oamenii la nunta dar acum a disparut traditia asta.
I suppose the 'cap' is glued in place and some coating is put inside to prevent the water escaping through the end grain? Amazing video; thanks for showing it.
Master at work!!!
¡Muy bueno! de un tornero de oficio.
República Argentina América del Sur
Yes...... work and man are İmpressive ,thanks for publiser too ı know Romania surely poor people
Thanks for sharing.
Stuart King
And when you find out the price of this pice of art,it blow iour mind!Something like5-10 $ !!!
Stuart and I came across serious racism against the Roma even from well educated intelligent people. Folk thought we would be in serious danger visiting the craftspeople and camps that we did. Ion Cinstantin did live in a city in Slatina. I think it is good that they value their Roma heritage.
Thank you, brilliant!
+1 :)
Super adevarata opinia ta!
nice! now i need 500 of those

This love it!!
Señores la necesidad, obliga. Querer.
i'd make the lathe into a similar setup as thos old sowing machines where the spinning would be continuous
A "treadle lathe" is what you are looking for, if you haven't found it by now.
Amazing Talent Here! Amazing, is any of his stuff for sale?
I love how he uses the tree's tension to operate the machine.
perfekt ! gratuláció ! 100000%
In Bulgaria still make these bottles! We call them "BUKLITZA" Just Google it
that was amazing!@
Asa o sa muncim in curand toti Romanii... ne intoarcem in curand la origini dupa ce terminam de furat ce a mai ramas din industrie.
Love it! How would one go about building a lathe like that, any plans?
Now THAT is a true helpmeet/wife! You won't find that in America.
Just for the record, these people are Romani, not Romanian and yes there is a considerable difference
In a photo towards the end with Ion sitting beside his wife, there's a little stool or something in front of Ion with a very cupped top... what is it exactly??
A small stool for "short feet table" or Something like that.
You respect
great , job .
QUE MARAVILHA. BRAZIL
haide România!
You coudn't have put it better... We are nothing without electricity and computers. If ever the SHTF we better know some about old technology.
Muito legal!!
It appears that he has only one turning tool.
i would love to know how to do this and to have the electricity free "devices"
+GeorgePreduca I have seen videos of a guy making his own pole-lathe, just can not remember where exactly, but it operates n a similar way to the one the old gentleman was using. Just hit google and look fir them on youtube. I agree with you regarding the electricity free devices, as that just seems to make the end result items so much more "authentic" ? i don't know the exact word, but i think you can get my feeling around the subject matter.
Wonderful craftsmanship. However, King you are a subject of the Queen--a proper Englishman. Is there something I missed?
Because you have no excuse for misspelling probably in the captions.
I wonder where the nearest hospital is?
Proberly?
nu poti sa nu dai like la asa ceva
A eso yo llamo ingenio
Explain this please.
Not true! Nobody can say that they live outside their native borders. The problem is their behavior against the world. They are entitled to have a state. Siria, Egypt, Jordania, Iran, Palestina...desire to eliminate the Israel. This is against all laws. Each people have the right to live in their inhabited lands. Will you like to see Russians or Hungarians asking us to leave this land because they consider we were not the first here?
A population have the right to own the land they inhabit.
Im romanian....
in my country bulgaria we call this a "hand job" or "hand made" this product i very expensive becose he was made only with hands and primitive instruments no machines.....price of this product fariation from 100$ to 250$ dolars
And by the way, Masonry is Anathematised by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church 80 years ago. The Metropolitan of Transsylvania, Nicolae Balan made a study on Freemasonry and based on that study, Freemasonry is considered heretical.
