    One gripe that I personally have about DKC goes more into detail with one of PM’s point: The hit boxes. More specifically,Donkey Kong’s character design vs. Diddy Kong’s character design. When DK picks up a barrel, he raises it over his head, leaving an open spot for enemies to attack him front on. However, Diddy’s character holds the barrel right in front of him, protecting his front. Not only is the way each character holds the barrel different, but their throwing capabilities as well. (DK = throws at an arch vs Diddy = throws in the direct front). The two contrasting positions of where the barrel is (in my eyes) makes the gameplay more strategic in DKC.
    Keep up the good work, PM. Your videos are very well detailed and the delivery of your ideas are objective👍🏽

    • @VIMaggotVIBrainzVI
      @VIMaggotVIBrainzVI 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That really has nothing to do with faulty hit boxes though. Like you said, it's a matter of strategy.
      If there actually WAS a problem with the hit boxes, then Diddy would still be able to get hit even IF he were holding a barrel in front of him and an enemy ran into him head-on. Same with Donkey Kong holding the barrel over his head and an enemy landing on top of him.

    • @georgezee5173
      @georgezee5173 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I don't think the differences when picknig up barrels is not really a problem but a way of adding variety on gameplay Anyway, it happens the same thing in its sequels, being Dixie the one that holds barrels on top of herself and Kiddy the one that holds them frontwards.

  • @electricmastro
    @electricmastro 6 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    I don't necessarily agree that "bigger is better," but I do think that a sequel should bring more quality than the first game delivers and potentially do more than what was done with the first game, and I'm glad to say that DKC2, from my viewpoint, just does that. It gives just about everything a player could ever want out of a sequel like this and leaves a hugely positive impact as a result.

    I'm a very long time fan of the series and this is really some spot on analysis in my opinion. I really believe that the reason why many people view the DKC series as overrated and not on the same level as other legendary platforming series like Castlevania, Mega Man, and that one with the little red guy is because the first DKC is the most famous game in the series and the one most people were exposed to first.
    Now, I don't dislike DKC, not at all, I think it's quite a good game, but I would agree that it's a bit underdeveloped and is, at its core, a fairly generic platformer with really, really great presentation elements like graphics, music, environments, etc. DKC2 truly drove the series to absurd new heights by combining everything that was good about DKC and ratcheting up the level design to like ten times what was on display in the first game. It achieved DKC1's full potential, and then some. I believe that if more people were introduced to the series through DKC2, they would view it with the reverence it truly deserves.

    My parents purchased a snes for me back in 1995 when I was 12 years old. It was a bundle with Killer Instinct, one of my all time favourites. I also got DK2 with it - undoubtedly the best game I ever played. Everything about it is perfect. From its gameplay to the awesome soundtrack, thank you David Wise. Today I am 34 years old with a whole bunch of consoles, but I still have my snes. I still play it to this day. DK2 is still at the top of the list. A memory that will never fade. I reckon when I'm 80 years old, if you plug in a snes and stick in DK2 I'll still finish it with 102% complete 😉

    I love this series you got going on with DKC. It reminds me of other's first looks at games or series they've never tried before, but I absolutely LOVE how objective you are with your analysis. You pay mind that something is beloved but you're not shy to point out its flaws. DKC2 definitely took the best elements of the first one and did them better. The Kremcoins and DK coins were a nice addition too, adding something else to shoot for before they started going insane with collectibles.
    Also, every mention of hitbox detection and stuff is accompanied by a clip of the Kongs running or jumping directly in to an enemy. No "hey, I jumped on top of that guy, why did I take damage?", just jumping face first directly in to one.

      Has this ever happened to you? You search TH-cam for someone who did a let's play of the GBA version of DKC2 and DKC3 and you find a guy who did do that, you subscribe and then that same guy completely rebrands his channel into a commentary channel and unlists all of his old videos a few weeks after you subscribed, you continue watching his videos as they come out and a few years later you find the same guy leaving a comment on a DKC2 video you're watching, bringing it all full circle? That's what just happened to me.

    Okay before I say anything content-wise, your audio mixing for this video is absolutely fabulous. Perfect balance struck here and hit the mood just right at all times. As the audio is such a big component of DKC, just wanna say, nailed that.
    And then... yeah I pretty much agree entirely. It's hard for me to say, having grown up with the entire trilogy and having DKC2 be the high bar I compare all 2D platformers to for basically my entire life. What I appreciate about DKC2 most is its balance between cautious play and frenetic play. In an initial playthrough, with everything new and highly dangerous, DKC2 often allows for players to survey the challenge ahead. Levels like Toxic Tower, where this isn't possible, tend to be remembered as some of the more challenging, and the Zingers in barrel blast sections often seem cruel in placement. Dixie is the answer to this, giving the player hesitation and even the ability to take back a bad jump. However, on a repeat playthrough, you can mow through enemies with DKC2's momentum mechanics. One enemy will often lead right into another, keeping Diddy's momentum going fantastically. Zinger traps often only require about half of a second of hesitation at most between when you first see them and when you can first get past them. Everything about the game is such a wonderful marriage of skill combined with learning whilst still being difficult.
    I guess that's what I like most about DKC2's evolution. In DKC, Diddy was just objectively better in 95% of situations and DK had some funny animations. DKC2 had two distinct playstyles cut from the exact same cloth, both equally valid to a player. It's the platformer that feels the absolute best to play, in my experience, and I'll always treasure it for that.

    0:38 & 1:58 - Dude, don't blame your lack of skills on the collision detection. Name ONE platformer where the player kills the enemy by running into him (assuming said player doesn't have some sort of temporary invincibility), because that's exactly what you did.
    I've been playing the DKC series for a loooong time. Never had any gripes with collision detection or hit boxes, so don't act like they're objective flaws in the first DKC game.

    I agree with all your points on DKC2, but your criticisms of DKC1 I think are skewed. The game was really the first of its kind with pre-rendered graphics and still is a technical marvel. Sure it has its shortcomings, but I think your criticisms are taking the game out of its original context. It's a tough thing to balance, but that's just how I feel. Either way, great video!

    I've never played DKC 1 or 2, but its so interesting to watch things like this and get the full context first. From what I can tell it's definitely the case that Rare was figuring things out in DKC 1, but really just let themselves have fun with DKC 2. If this was a game nowadays, I feel like both games would be in one, but DKC 1 would be the early access version and DKC 2 would be the patched version with extra/remixed levels. If the Switch ever gets the Virtual Console I'll need to check both out haha. Well done man!! Really enjoyed it

    So much here, and all of it is part of why I hold THIS game as my favorite "nostalgia title", even though I owned both DKC1 and SMW a year prior. When I look at what sort of gamer I am and ask myself "why", so many times the answer is "because that's what DKC2 did"... Although, at the same time, having played that AFTER DKC1's excellence also taught me "it can always be improved", so... there's that, too.

  • @lolwillow188
    @lolwillow188 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    i don't know if the clips being shown each time you brought up DKC1's collision detection issue, but it looks like you just suck at the game dude you walk into each one of those enemies very visibly not above them. ESPECIALLY at 2:18. That was not a hit-box issue, you very clearly made contact with the front of the beetle. I think you are just throwing out phrases you hear other game reviewers use to sound like you know what your talking about. You also neglected the soundtrack entirely despite USING IT IN YOUR VIDEO?!?! Long time fans of the game acknowledge the soundtrack as being incredible. Half hour long versions of these tunes are all over youtube, even being recommended right now to me, that have over 200k views. And about it, you.said.nothing. Maybe you are not big into music at all, but if you want to do game reviews you need to acknowledge that the soundtrack is an integral aesthetic. If you bothered to read this far id like you to know your review wasn't all bad. You make relevant comparisons between the first and the sequel most of which i agree with. But you do repeat yourself A LOT and your topic coverage is very sporadic.

    • @PostMesmeric
      @PostMesmeric  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly, I'm a huge music fan. I've made some videos about my favorite albums of each year, in fact. As many people have already noted, yes, I did not talk about the soundtrack, but I wanted to focus on the game's design over anything else in this video. Though I will say that, due to the feedback I've received regarding the music, I'm very much tempted to make a video solely about the DKC2 soundtrack. I think if I do end up covering music in singular videos, that'll be a top-tier pick to cover. And yes, I read this all the way through. Take care and thanks for the feedback.

      @@PostMesmeric Thanks in advance. That metal sound when Megaman gets hit in the first installment is so appealing. Pity they changed it in the sequels. Probably to save memory space and basic performance?

    You need at least 10x the subscribers that you have. I feel like I'll be getting to say "I was subscribed since >3000, I'm so cool" pretty soon.

    If you weren't around in 1994 to see this game when it first came out, you won't understand! The game is a masterpiece, the 1st and 2nd. The 3rd sucked.

    God doesn’t want anybody in hell because He loves us, but you must understand why we deserve hell and why those who refuse to live under His authority will go there. He gave us the law (Ten Commandments) not to make us righteous, but rather to show us our sin (Romans 3:20). We’re not sinners because we sin, but rather we sin because we’re sinners. Sin is the nature of our flesh that we are born with due to the sin of Adam in the garden. For someone to be justified before God they have to be sinless. We’ve all sinned (Romans 3:23), and the the law demands death for those who sin (Romans 6:23). God is righteous, so He must punish our sin, which is what He did through His Son Jesus Christ on the cross. Jesus is Holy and sinless, yet He received our sin when He died on the cross, so that we can be righteous before God (2 Corinthians 5:21). When He died on the cross, He said “It is finished” (John 19:30), which means He paid the full price for all of your sins (past, present, and future) to be forgiven. He was buried and rose again from the dead. God will forgive anybody who puts their full trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation. We aren’t saved based on our good deeds, but only by the grace of God (Ephesians 2:8-9). His precious blood that He shed is the only reason why we can be forgiven of our sins (Hebrews 9:22). If you confess that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised Him from the dead, then you’ll be saved (Romans 10:9). You are born-again with the Spirit of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), and are not only legally justified before God, but also are accredited His righteous (Romans 4:24). Believers live for Christ now, so get to know Him through His Word. I recommend reading the book of Romans and the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), and watching Pastor Joseph Prince’s online sermons

    I like your video, but I disagree with some of your thoughts about these games.
    I feel DKC2 is a game that tries hard to be like the original, but cooler, yet it fails really bad on basic things.
    There are a bunch of new ridiculous ideas implemented in this game. Some bosses don't make sense, the quality of the renders is way inferior compared to the first title and the stages don't even seem to belong to the same world we experienced before. Also, there are many stages that are just boring to play: boring looking, boring hard and boring long. In my opinion, It's just bad design!
