Afton was first shown in 8-Bit minigames that appeared in some FNAF titles, so the “Purple Guy” name kinda stuck, since we didn’t know his name before the first books. 15:35 You may have missed a little comment that slid in earlier, but those are the Withered Animatronics from FNAF2. I'll say this. Most FNAF lore-heads agree that, while it poses some good ideas, MatPat's Ultimate FNAF Timeline video series is pretty much just a fanfiction framed as a theory video. While it's nice to see him take a shot at a more narratively-focused FNAF timeline, a lot of what he says is either completely made up (see most of this first video), has already been disproven (see most of the fourth video), or (somehow) both (see most of the things written in the character encyclopedia).

Looking forward to the rest of the series! Afton‘s first appearance was as a purple 8-bit sprite in the FNAF 2 and FNAF 3 mini games, and due to a lack of information the community named him “Purple Guy”. While matpats videos are good, dont take them as fact, there is no true fnaf timeline as we barely have much confirmed facts and a sea of speculation, this is mats own headcanon timeline and essentially every single theorists has their own
I can't wait for you to experience the emotional rollercoaster that is the rest of this, it is a WILD ride. Unfortunately, some stuff is just glossed over because it runs under the assumption that you know some basic things that the fandom has collectively known for years, or have been watching at least a few of Game Theory's other videos on the series. 10:20 Imagine a spinoff game where it's just a tycoon game where you manage a pizzeria with these mascots and none of the murders happened. 11:48 It's just a dramatic exaggeration. 15:37 They're stitching together renders of various versions of the characters, since a "fixed" version of these characters in their original state doesn't exist outside of fan creations. 16:18 Not yet, bit rudimentary AI comes sooner than you may think. 18:04 He's a bit obsessive. That is a pretty consistent trait, depending on your interpretation of the lore. 20:45 That is a joke some people have made.
Yeah, what you said at the end is really the main draw of this series. It's just so compelling and draws you down the rabbit hole (no pun intended) of FNAF and you just can't leave because there are so many questions you genuinely want answers to.
Before William Afton was known as William Afton, he was always called as Purple Guy by the fans because in the beginning, he was just this mysterious creepy killer. We didn't know his name early in the franchise. He was always depicted as a pixelated purple man during flashback mini-games. Because of Scott's consistency (mostly consistent anyway) with his color-coding, almost anything with purple is associated with William.
He was named purple guy by the community back in 2014 as his first ever appearances only despicted him as a 8-bit sprite of a man's purple sillhouete way before he ever had a revealed name
This is one of the most entertaining videos I've seen in a long time lmaoo. It's really cool seeing somebody who knows NOTHING about Fnaf try and watch a video that breaks down it's extremely complicated and convoluted lore lmao. "...He doesn't become immortal until his first death in Springtrap." And Mathew's face just says "I'm sorry???" hahaha.
The second I heard about William's addiction with his oc Spring Bonnie I straight up thought "What is this guy? A furry." and immediately after that thought you also said basically the thing I said. Are you in my walls?
"He harnessed life" is just a metaphor, dude. Creating an artifical thing that moves around is pretty much like creating life even if it isn't really life. It's sci-fi literary poetic stuff. It's just not meant to be taken literally.
About the books: There's a trilogy consisting of The Silver Eyes, The Twisted Ones and The Fourth Closet. Then, there's a book series called Fazbear Frights that has eleven books comprised of 3 short horror stories per book, and a twelfth one with bonus stories that didn't make the cut. After that, we've got another series similar to Fazbear Frights called Tales of The Pizzaplex, which again is 3 short horror stories per book. Continueing, there's a How To Draw book for drawing the animatronics, an Ultimate Guide, a Survival Logbook, and finally there's The Freddy Files, which has a bunch of stuff about gameplay, cheats, tips and tricks, and a bit about lore and fan theories.
Math, William is purple because first time he was showed was in 8 bit minigame and was indeed purple. Before we knew his real name, he was just dubbed "the purple guy"
We don't have any official not withered OG Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, or Foxy designs so Chica's jaw and the tears are actually moreso their withered forms than how the would have fully looked on stage.
William Afton is called "purple guy" because before we learned the name, everyone just called him "purple guy" because the only three things we knew about him was he was a guy, he was a murderer, and his sprite was purple
15:30 Matpat is simply working with limited visuals here. Despite all the games that were made, we've never had a 3D render of the very first Freddy Fazbear's, nor Fredbear's Family Diner. The closest we got was FNAF 2, which features run down "Withered" versions of the original Freddy Fazbear's animatronics, kept around only for spare parts in favor of newer models. (Except Bonnie, which has the face of the FNAF 1 Bonnie, because Withered Bonnie had his whole face ripped off.) Also, FNAF 2 is a prequel to FNAF 1, but disguised as a sequel. The checks you get at the end of each game reveal the truth. Yes, this means this entire first video was constructed entirely from various random hints and minor facts found throughout the entire series;. Not a single game as ever covered any part of this entire first era as part of actual gameplay.
When you review music again do you think you could review the Music from the Bayonetta Series, I have full confidence that you'll be blown away with how Dazzling the Bayonetta OST is.

This ia a great video Mat! But I really cannot stop laughing at the fact that every other word during MatPat's final explanation seems to give you a whiplash lmao
It's always fun to watch a new FNAF fan slowly going insane and rethinking their life choices when joining the fandom. Welcome Mathew. We're happy to have you
Oh, you should react to the entire Playlist of MatPats FNAF Theory Videos. And make a Playlist of that....just uhh don't take a shot every time there's a major change in the Lore.....you'd die from exploded organs before Alcohol Poisoning. FNaF Lore has.....been a hellish trip, with I genuinely don't know how many twists&turns&potential Retcons in the not even 10 years FNaF has existed for.
i genuinely don’t know if mathew should watch all the other 50 (i think?) previous episodes, all the way from the beginning (probably not it’s own series on youtube tho - just to watch on his own). they have a lot of the core theories and ideas that most of the fandom is already familiar with, so maybe that way he’d be a little less confused with everything. on the other hand, it’s SO MUCH info to digest and, from what i’ve seen of his other reactions, it would probably fucking melt his brain.
Lore in FNAF is more complicated than most games because the games themselves do not tell you the lore and the creators almost never confirm anything. All the games only hint at the lore while you, the player, try not to get killed by animatronics. If this was just one game, it would be more simple, but spanning over several games gives a pre-Hyrule Hystoria Zelda experience in lore theorizing. The thing fans want most from a FNAF game is that juicy mystery (which MatPat popularized in his first FNAF theory vid). Scott figured this out quickly after the first game and doubled down on the mystery in the second game. When the mystery in the second game became even juicier, with a mind-blowing "it's a prequel" twist, fans went nuts and couldn't get enough. This set the stage for the series to be more about the theories than anything else. The timeline is all theories and, because of that, some of it gets retconned as more games get released. A lore like Kingdom Hearts' timeline may be more complicated, but it's still very solid because it's been confirmed. Even Zelda has a less complicated timeline just because of how much has been confirmed.
If we got killed and stuffed into the animatronics we whould be EXTRA quirky at night . Fucking taking selfies at the bathroom, yelling out "OPEN THE NOOR" at the window of the doors
so jsut in case noone else has said it let me explain though its late: for YEARS we didn't even know william afton's NAME let alone that he was one of the guys who built fazbear entertainment. All we knew was that the killer was represented as a purple humanoid figure. and thus the fans called him...Purple Guy. (likely to avoid confusion with the marvel comics sueprvillain Purple man) we didn't find out Afton's name till Sister location, and even then it wasn't clear HE was the purple guy until Pizzeria Simulator.
I like how we have all this messed up stuff going on with children murders and some random purple dude slowly turning into a psychopath. Then we have Henry and Micheal. 2 poor people who don't seem that bad and are involved in all this chaos
william afton is often depicted with a simple purple sprite in the games, and for a long time until his name was revealed he was collectively known as purple guy. thats why hes purple :)
When you've finished the timeline, you should backtrack to MatPat's first video on FNAF. The theories related to in-game mysteries are largely inaccurate these days, but the video goes pretty in-depth regarding the unfortunate real-life event that may have inspired the first game.
Yep. 8 years and most of the games were made by one guy working in Dollar General. Technically there’s more than 11 games as well if you count spin-offs.
Yeah, of 1, 2, 3, 4, SL, FFPS, UCN, HW, SB are considered 9. But another notable one would be the defunct AR game, Special Delivery. As for the 11th, I believe here it would be Security Breach: Fury's Rage, an apology game made 2 years ago, when the actual SB got delayed to December. Two games remaining are FNAF World - a cutesy spinoff after 4, and Freddy in Space 2 - made for a St Jude charity stream in late 2019. So technically that's 13 games all together. As for the 19 books, those would be the original novel trilogy, 12 books of Fazbear's Frights, and 4 of Tales from the Pizzaplex (6 is now on its way), but there are also a Survival Logbook, 3 guide books, and the Character Encyclopedia (the latter are debatable in terms of reliable information).
The third era is still going through revelation after revelation with new books and games coming out, so it might not be super accurate anymore soon, but currently this timeline is really sound with the information we have. Seems important to know in case later videos you might watch seem to contradict things said in this timeline.

@@Digi-BlueFox but them being haunted explains the bite of 83 better than them just being faulty, plus this isn't proof more so just an observation, the 5 kids killed in this establishment each have a place to go, nothing wrong with thinking the fnaf 2 animatronics are just faulty btw, it doesn't really change anything and isn't all that important, but it is small details like that I kinda wish Scott would just confirm, even if he choses to do it in the books idgaf, any piece of conformation is a win in this franchise lol (and even then some people will still argue against it, looking at the mike=crying child people)
Which one you disagree on?
nobody:
the description: OPEN ME :D
15:45 So I think it's mentioned at some point in the video, but Mat used these broken 'Withered' versions to represent the animatronics because there aren't actually any non-Withered versions of these particular animatronics (they are different models in-universe from the more 'clean' looking ones you are probably familiar with)
“Maybe he’s just a furry” yes actually, alot of people in the fandom has agreed that he was in fact a furry. Some may argue that he was but its there.
When they say Henry harnessed life itself they don't mean actual life they're talking about the animatronics and how life like they feel
YOU HAVE TAKEN A PATH THAT YOU WILL NEVER COME BACK FROM
Early into the games no one knew William’s name. He was just referred to as The Purple Guy because multiple mini games depicted the sprite of a purple man. We didn’t actually get a name until the second book in the series
Ladies and Gents...
You are witnessing a pure soul who is attempting to learn and understand the FNaF Timeline/Lore.
Lets hope he doesn't pop blood vessels by thinking too hard.
Matpat making 3 parts of the ultimate timeline, is a great BASELINE
As someone who's been in the FNaF community since early 2017, it's so weird but really interesting to see someone who *doesn't* know every single little bit and detail of the lore, react to it- it's fun seeing new fans completely shocked over how William or Michael, or literally anyone else in this series died lol
Him not knowing who purple guy was was so wild to hear.
The last part of the timeline has been completely destroyed by the new character called the mimic.
A Matthew reacting to another Matthew!? I didn't know such thing existed
Me either
Before William Afton was known as William Afton, he was always called as Purple Guy by the fans because in the beginning, he was just this mysterious creepy killer. We didn't know his name early in the franchise. He was always depicted as a pixelated purple man during flashback mini-games. Because of Scott's consistency (mostly consistent anyway) with his color-coding, almost anything with purple is associated with William.
He was named purple guy by the community back in 2014 as his first ever appearances only despicted him as a 8-bit sprite of a man's purple sillhouete way before he ever had a revealed name
Welp, he’s got a lot to learn, even if I’m not a part of the fandom I know that there’s alot.
Can't wait for the next parts, shit gets wild. As usual. Welcome to Freddy's, where robots and migranes come to life.
True, but dont forget robots designed to mimic humans in their entirety!
About the books:
There's a trilogy consisting of The Silver Eyes, The Twisted Ones and The Fourth Closet.
You have to do them all. It's such an interesting lore
1:59 me: thats the tame part
15:35 it's canon that those animatronics were the exact ones to preform there, there's just no official pictures of them in a prime condition
William Afton is called "purple guy" because before we learned the name, everyone just called him "purple guy" because the only three things we knew about him was he was a guy, he was a murderer, and his sprite was purple
wasnt Markiplier the first person to give him the name purple guy
15:30 Matpat is simply working with limited visuals here. Despite all the games that were made, we've never had a 3D render of the very first Freddy Fazbear's, nor Fredbear's Family Diner. The closest we got was FNAF 2, which features run down "Withered" versions of the original Freddy Fazbear's animatronics, kept around only for spare parts in favor of newer models. (Except Bonnie, which has the face of the FNAF 1 Bonnie, because Withered Bonnie had his whole face ripped off.)
Also, FNAF 2 is a prequel to FNAF 1, but disguised as a sequel. The checks you get at the end of each game reveal the truth. Yes, this means this entire first video was constructed entirely from various random hints and minor facts found throughout the entire series;. Not a single game as ever covered any part of this entire first era as part of actual gameplay.
This is not a definitive guideline, it's all just a theory
Wow, It's been like 5 years since I was into FNAF but so much has apparently happened in that time haha. The lore is so different now haha
When you review music again do you think you could review the Music from the Bayonetta Series, I have full confidence that you'll be blown away with how Dazzling the Bayonetta OST is.
There's just one problem: MatPat gets VERY off-track with the most RANDOM things, he doesn't explain things that matter and move on he can get distracted with unimportant details very quickly 💀
Fazgoo is basically a type of goo thing which when it has your DNA it can create a clone of you, its pretty weird
18:06 Henry is the savior, that's why he didn't just wait William to bankrupt cause he wanted to save William.
If we got killed and stuffed into the animatronics we whould be EXTRA quirky at night . Fucking taking selfies at the bathroom, yelling out "OPEN THE NOOR" at the window of the doors
Im pretty sure the purple guy sprite was just meant to represent someone hiding in the shadows quite literally shady
Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzaria is basically Little Ceasers, it’s well known that their pizza sucks but people still eat it anyways 😂
so jsut in case noone else has said it let me explain though its late:
for YEARS we didn't even know william afton's NAME let alone that he was one of the guys who built fazbear entertainment. All we knew was that the killer was represented as a purple humanoid figure. and thus the fans called him...Purple Guy. (likely to avoid confusion with the marvel comics sueprvillain Purple man)
we didn't find out Afton's name till Sister location, and even then it wasn't clear HE was the purple guy until Pizzeria Simulator.
I like how we have all this messed up stuff going on with children murders and some random purple dude slowly turning into a psychopath. Then we have Henry and Micheal. 2 poor people who don't seem that bad and are involved in all this chaos
Watching him slowly try to connect the dots between William Afton and Purple Guy brings me so much serotonin and i have no idea why
20:43 No, William Afton is not a furry. But, Spring bonnie/spring trap is a OC. OC means original character
Also Mascot/ Character suits can be considered as fursuits Because they are usually made out of fur fabrics And they are also original characters
william afton is often depicted with a simple purple sprite in the games, and for a long time until his name was revealed he was collectively known as purple guy. thats why hes purple :)
11:30 The five hundred Jeremys of the franchise: 👀
Xdxd
I CANT WAIT FOR PART 2 AND 3
It’s kinda funny how little he knows about FNAF at the beginning 😂
the best part is, this isn’t even a fully agreed upon timeline. i really hope some clarity comes soon 😔
Fnaf lore takes to long to learn to pause for chitchat in between lol
When you've finished the timeline, you should backtrack to MatPat's first video on FNAF. The theories related to in-game mysteries are largely inaccurate these days, but the video goes pretty in-depth regarding the unfortunate real-life event that may have inspired the first game.
The WHAT? Real life event???
@@auroraharmony2807 It happened at Chuck E Cheese’s by a former employee
8:18 , tell me you never seen a circus without telling me you never see a circus
It hasn’t even been six months yet and the lore video is already outdated 😂 God I love this fandom 💀😭
💀
Yep. 8 years and most of the games were made by one guy working in Dollar General. Technically there’s more than 11 games as well if you count spin-offs.
great video as always! keep it up
Yeah, of 1, 2, 3, 4, SL, FFPS, UCN, HW, SB are considered 9.
I can’t believe you are watching Game Theory!! As I’ve been a fan of them for a while, I’m glad other YTs are watching him for content too!!
3:30 I love how after watching asdfmovie you have to specify when talking about child murderers 😂😂😂
I’ve spent 9 years trying to learn and perfect my understanding of this lore, good luck! :D
The third era is still going through revelation after revelation with new books and games coming out, so it might not be super accurate anymore soon, but currently this timeline is really sound with the information we have. Seems important to know in case later videos you might watch seem to contradict things said in this timeline.
14:33 That was Kellen Goff's Glamrock Freddy voice. It is jarring at first, but after a while, you learn to like it.
as a fnaf fan, watching matthew try to put together fnaf lore is hilarious
16:50 its the fnaf start feeling. welcome to the family!
This is so funny to watch when youre caught up with the lore lmao! This poor sap has no idea haha
honestly there isnt like one single definitive timeline, there is SOOO much left up to interpretation, so many gaps and major details that people still cant agree on
this was a long time coming after all the reactions to fan music and im sooo happy
honestly the quiz you took contradicts this timeline but the timeline is so much better and came out after the quiz
