    26:00 This is what killed my mother. She was a hypochondriac, always complaining about different symptoms. When she started telling her doctor about agonizing abdominal cramps, nausea, and bloating, he recommended counselling. Two years later, when they finally diagnosed cancer, it was too late. It had already spread to her liver, pancreas, and stomach. Chemotherapy made her so frail that she died.
    I've been told by other doctors subsequently that they're taught an aphorism in med school for exactly that situation: "Hypochondriacs get heart attacks too." It's meant to remind them that even if they're 99% sure someone is faking or imagining symptoms, they have to treat it like it's real every time. Just in case. Because eventually it will be.

      I have experienced loss myself, I lost my dad three years ago. It hurts so bad, especially when you knew then well, he was only 37.. he died of a slightly rare kind of cancer, stage 4. I cried for weeks and weeks, and you need to know, almost everyone here lost someone, whether young, or old.. the point is, it will be ok. You are not alone. So stay strong, and live your best life, because it's not going to get any easier. 🙃

      "Nice and Gentle" was the CRITICISM I had about this video - I found it kind of BORING. Too much background and not enough treatment - but this is about an AMBULANCE and FIRST RESPONDERS and not about emergency medical DIAGNOSIS and TREATMENT. I prefer being the DOCTOR to being a FIRST RESPONDER.- not the fault of the video just my preference.

      Right? In one of the early episodes, a woman who scraped her knee - literally just scraped her knee - rated her pain at 9/10 and took air and gas. In the same episode, a teen broke his collarbone and walked himself across his school campus before calmly communicating with the responders and also rating his pain at 9/10 and receiving air and gas.

      I live with chronic pain at a 6 - 7 level that never eases up (a massive injury sustained six years ago); I don't like anyone else to know how much I hurt, so I typically joke a lot so that others don't otherwise know that when I'm by myself, I'm not the smiling, joking person they see most days. I feel very sorry for the young girl; that pain is horrendous, especially for someone so young.

    I felt so bad for the girl with kidney problems. I passed a kidney stone the same time I was giving birth to my third child! The nurses talking about me like "what's wrong with her, the baby is out!" A week later I was back in the hospital with a kidney infection and that folks, was the beginning of a 26 year kidney rollercoaster which leaves me at level 3B in chronic kidney disease. @@shellc6743 I'm sure if someone younger behaved the same way, joking about, someone would still find it cute. Some people have adorable personalities no matter their age, and some might find their spunkiness "cute" in their old age, in contrast to the cantankerous, non-compliant sort. Some find the cranky folks cute, too, if one isn't a nay-saying wet blanket. Some people like people.

    • @BJkoolness
      @BJkoolness 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@shellc6743 it’s a biological instinct to find elderly people cute, for the same reasons we find babies cute. They’re vulnerable, therefor we find them “cute” which, in turn, makes us feel more inclined to care for them. That being said, I do agree with you, more so if you’re actually talking to the elderly person, don’t treat them like a baby, of course. Just because we may find them “cute” doesn’t mean we should project those feelings onto the person, because it really is degrading.

No disrespect to France, the paramedics were lovely, but it was essentially like being in the back of an empty van with a bed stuck in it. No pain relief, barely any equipment. I love this show. It proves to me that the US needs an NHS. These people aren't afraid to call for help when they need it. In America, you don't call for an ambulance unless you are already 80% dead. No one wants a 600$ ambulance bill. If you are in as much pain as the first woman, you get the fun of walking yourself into the ER. If you break a bone, you get to go to Urgent Care instead. It's so sad.
    P.S. Damnit Janet, we almost got to see a naked 40 year old man in his shower.

      I was an emergency paramedic for over 25 years. Believe me, no one is afraid to call for an ambulance. In fact most of the calls for ambulance are for something they could see their doctor for. The people who don’t need assistance regularly abuse the system. I even had one call for a sick child. I walked past 5 vehicles (all newer than my own) and was told upon being met by the father - “my car is not good enough to take my baby to the hospital”. The child had a cold and was in absolutely no distress - parents were just tired of dealing with him. People who truly needed EMS (especially the elderly) would apologize for “disturbing” us. It was not uncommon to be at a BS call when another call that was serious would happen nearby. Sadly we could not go to the significant call because we were dealing with some idiot thus delaying care for some who really needed assistance who had to wait for the ambulance stationed further away. Abuse of the system is rampant!!!!

      To be honest i'm happier with the current state of US healthcare! Have you heard these stories?!? "Shes been to the hospital over 20 times and still waiting on test results" like that absolutely blows my mind. In the US i can schedule and appointment or even just walk into a specialists tell them my problem and either have tests done the same day or if its more intrusive schedule them for the same week or the next and have results nearly immediately. How are these poor people going to the hospital and being sent home without at least a diagnosis?! In the US you go to a hospital to get a diagnosis and treatment not to be sent home to wait on a test.

      We don't have them in Canada due to privacy and patient confidentiality laws. There was a Canadian program from the 1990s sometime but in the last 20 years the laws have become stronger in this regard. Although we don't yet have privatized insurance it looks like it is heading that way in my province and also I don't think the EMTs or physicians want to be put under the scrutiny that some of these programs put. I've seen things in some of these programs that have been questionable - not this one per se, but there seems to be a whole host of programs from the UK like this.

    What the paramedics were discussing at 14:11 about being kind during someone’s emergency is so true. I’ve thankfully had very few trips in ambulance but one experience was absolutely horrifying. They treated me like I was a hypochondriac and were quite brisk and cruel, hesitating before taking me to hospital. Inexplicably this continued with the nurse who assessed me. Once they realized that I was quite sick their attitudes changed. It was infuriating. On top of being in a great deal of pain I was scared and so was my husband. Thankfully that is the on,y time I experienced that. Any other interactions for myself, family, clients have been so much better - kind, patient, etc.

Certain activities such as long ride in a bumpy car or any activity that vibrates makes my kidney drop down and kinks the ureter. Very painful kidney infections. Now 50 years later. Never had to have surgery to attach the kidney as I just stay out of cars or trucks with bumpy rides, take frequent breaks when on long drives and never more than 8 hours without lying down. Sometimes make sure i am laying with my bum on a pillow. So far, so good.

They went out for someone having allergies, another guy had acid reflux. It was astounding to me. Here, in the US you call ambulances for real emergencies. I guess because if you have to pay for it, you make it count. Plus, I also noticed that they aren't as respectful of ambulances on the road either and that is probably because they are so common on the road. Just my take on what I have been watching and observing so far. I wonder if they have Urgent Care centers, haven't heard any mention of those and that could help them a lot.

    Charlotte is a woman who actually gets the universal pain scale

    • @giannagodsey8011
      @giannagodsey8011 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Well the reason nobody really gets it is because everyone has a different pain tolerance. I’ve never broken a bone or gotten a really bad cut, the worst I’ve got is a scrape. So my pain tolerance is really low because I don’t feel much pain. Compared to someone who gets hurt on the daily...

      Kara well of course it has to do with that but I’m just saying that’s why people don’t really have the same pain scale. If I had the same symptoms as the first girl I would rate the pain a million out of ten because I’ve never felt that pain before.

    • @eiosti
      @eiosti 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@giannagodsey8011 sure but you have to rate it compared to how bad it is rather than how bad it feels. Like for me, i have a high pain tolerance and I've experienced what I thought was level 6 but then threw up and nearly passed out so I'd now rate it more 7 or 8. I've torn muscles and been told that if I could walk it wasn't really torn so I spent the rest of my vacation acting like it was fine, because I could, and now to this day still feel pain because it never healed right. It goes both ways. In the moment, I should have seen that I didn't have my full range of motion or anywhere near and rated the pain higher, not walked, etc

    When I was 4 I stuck a chickpea up my nose, my mom didn't call an ambulance but she took me to the hospital instead. It may sound like something trivial and not important but anyhting that size can be very dangerous in a toddler's nose. The chickpea was so far up my nose I almost needed surgery.

    I have the same issue as Charlotte.
    Any bladder infection, is a trip to the doctor right away. I have scarring on my kidneys, and sometimes they ache.
    I’ve had many kidney infections. I left a kidney infection because I was tired of the wait times at the hospital (8 hrs+), I ended up with sepsis and had to get IV therapy for weeks (azithromycin and vancomycin).

    Using nitrous as an analgesic drug in the ambulance and ER makes *SO* much sense. I really wish this was the norm in the U.S. as it certainly would have at least saved a few people from opiate addiction.
