  • A request from "Dusty Druid", Dravot's Farewell is a hymn from the film "The Man Who Would Be King".
    Wikipedia has the following:
    Daniel Dravot (DRAV-it) is a fictional character in Rudyard Kipling's novella "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888) and its film adaptation. In the film, he is portrayed by Sean Connery.
    Not having read the book, nor having seen the film, I am not sure if the hymn was written by Kipling or by Maurice Jarre. The melody is 'borrowed' from the Irish folk song, "The Minstrel Boy".
    In the film, I think Dravot sings it just using the melody of the first two lines from "The Minstrel Boy", but I have chosen to sing it using the whole melody.
    Dravot’s Farewell
    G C G Em C G D G
    The Son of God goes forth to war, a kingly crown to gain.
    C G Em C G D G
    His blood red banner streams afar. Who follows in his train?
    Em C D G C D G
    Who best can drink his cup of woe, triumphant over pain?
    C G Em C G D G
    Who patient bears his cross below, he follows in his train.
    That martyr first, whose eagle eye could pierce beyond the grave;
    Who saw his Master in the sky and called on him to save.
    Like him, with pardon on his tongue, in midst of mortal pain,
    He prayed for them that did the wrong: who follows in his train?
    A glorious band, the chosen few on whom the Spirit came;
    Twelve valiant saints, their hope they knew, and mocked the cross and flame.
    They met the tyrant's brandished steel, the lion's gory mane;
    They bowed their heads the death to feel: who follows in their train?
    A noble army, men and boys, the matron, and the maid,
    Around the Saviour's throne rejoice, in robes of light arrayed.
    They climbed the steep ascent of heaven, through peril, toil and pain;
    O God, to us may grace be given, to follow in their train.

      I was privileged to meet him in person about thirty years or so ago when he was playing golf at Castletown Golf Course where I was working as a greenkeeper. He was a thorough gentleman. RIP

    I’ve been looking for a full version set to “The Moreen” since I was in 6th grade when I first saw The Man Who Would King! As a reasonably devout Anglican, I intend to carry this to every church, public house and dive bar in the Northeast US!

    Beautiful rendition. The basis of the lyrics is the old hymn "The Son of God Goes Forth to War" by Reginald Heber, which is commonly sung to a different tune.

      I too, much prefer this Celtic tune “The Moreen” over the uninspired other tune. Well done, sir.

    I saw the movie in 1979 and wondered about the song ever since. I thought it was an obscure British Empire protestant hymn. THANKS FOR SHARING THIS !!! 😃👍

      That's basically what it is btw, the lyrics are originally from a Church text while the melody is taken from The Minstrel Boy

    Absolutely amazing. Thanks for doing a "Minstrel Boy" rendition like in the Man Who Would Be King.
    I don't like how the third line of each verse differs from the 1st, 2nd and 4th. I know it's technically correct but I wish someone would do a unique rendition without that, and just keep the manly vibe in the 3rd line.

      Never met him, though I believe he lived in Laxey which is about twenty miles from my own home. I enjoyed his books though particularly a golf related story "McAusland in the Rough".
