Am I the only one who could listen to him all night?? His humbleness gets me. A great actor that many actors would love to be considered as good as, and yet he always talks about the people HE "looked up to." What a legend.
For a man of such towering achievement over such a long period, Michael Cane’s humility and down to earth nature is wonderful. This man is a credit to his craft.
Andy, if you haven't done so read Caine's memoir Blowing the Bloody Doors Off- it's a self-help book, instruction manual on the craft of acting and so much more. A delight from beginning to end.
The Man who would be King is a magnificent piece of film making. It’s pretty much perfect and I have wonderful memories of my late Dad taking me to watch it. I would have been about 8, that same year he took me to see Zulu which had been re-released. Doesn’t get better than that for a young boy to see two of the greatest adventure movies ever made.
Michael Caine is always a wonderful partner, for example, in two of the films cited, apart from The Man Who Would Be King, there is excellent chemistry between the two lead actors: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Sleuth.
For me, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is one of the most underrated performances in Michael Caine's career. It's one of those performances that I never tire of watching.
I still think Get Carter is his best film. Fantastic story, brilliant acting, the Jack Carter character is genuinely sadistic, psychotic, menacing, and yet at the time utterly believable.
1. Man Who Would Be King 2. Alfie 3. Zulu 4. Ipcress File 5. The Italian Job 6. Get Carter 7. The Eagle Has Landed 8. Escape To Victory 9. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels I tried to keep it at just 5 but he's done so many brilliant films!
The man who would be king is a work of genius Every choice is brilliant and caine and connery together are amazing. The opening sequence before peachy's arrival at Kipling's office is so confident - just shots of India, relaxed, dense and fascinating and complex. Beautiful. And then... the greatest shaggy dog story ever. Plummer is also perfect as kipling.
Agree COMPLETELY. It's power is EXTRAORDINARY!!! It's amazing there's only 2 actors in the whole movie...to quote a movie reviewer (paraphrasing here): "An acting battle royale and tour de force of a movie"...so true. It's one of those movies that's gets better the more times you see it (we movie nerds know what that means...e.g. you know you're a movie nerd when you've seen the same movie more than 20 times voluntarily).

I was asked recently for a recommendation for a really great old movie that no one knows. I fired off a few but Sleuth was top of the list. If you're into handsome British fellows from the 70s I'll include The Stuntman as recommended viewing.
I've seen Michael Caine talk about lots of stuff. I have to say that I truly love this guy. Bright, Intelligent, Witty. Britain you have a national treasure.
I never understood why Second Hand Lions wasn't a major hit. Caine & Duvall at the top of their game. A wonderful script, music & pure movie magic. 😃 So entertaining!
I'm glad Dirty Rotten Scoundrels gets mentioned here as it's such an underrated film and absolutely hilarious. Slightly surprised The Italian Job doesn't get mentioned or Zulu or The Ipcress File as in the UK those were three of his most popular films at the box office. He's also excellent in Educating Rita.
Caine's acting in war dramas was always spot on. Just to mention Zulu, A bridge too far and Battle of Britain. He was a conscript (National Service) soldier in the Korean War. It helps differentiate him from the current crop of actors who have never served.
I adore Michael Caine -- he has one of the greatest film careers in the history of the movies, and it spans almost 60 years, going on. And sure as heck he's one of the greatest storytellers. I saw him tell his stories in person once, at a tribute to him in Hollywood. He had people laughing till they practically fell out of their seats.
Another one is "The Mission." Amazing photography and scenery and a fascinating story hidden in history. It doesn't make anybody's Top Ten list except mine.

Love the bloke to bits, and I love to hear his natural voice, even after all these years of living here there and everywhere, he still has an accent you hear everyday here in London, every day down the pub, at a football match, and in the markets.
Can't really argue with Caine's picks, but "Too Late the Hero" with Cliff Robertson was a pretty good Caine flick. "Zulu" was also one of my favorites as a kid. Caine's stories are always great. Woody Allen using Caine to deliver messages to his wife is hysterical. The Olivier story was priceless. Caine is a gem.
I am so confused, as a major MC fan i find it incredible that nobody mentioned what i think is MC's best piece of acting in this thread. Although he was only in the movie for a short time, his mere presence made a film gravitate to a higher level as his subtle acting shone through like a beacon and made the movie a must watch heart warmer// Cider House Rules.
If I had to pick not just a favourite actor but a favourite human being Michael Caine would be in the top 3! So humble and just a nice man! I pray the world keeps him for many more years.

This is so lovely and amusing. Many thanks for uploading. Michael Caine, as well as being a wonderfully talented actor, is in that fine tradition of English actor raconteurs that includes David Niven and Peter Ustinov. You would certainly want him to be a guest at you 'perfect dinner party.'
Half my life I was a teacher to kids, a lecturer to students, a teacher trainer, an adult IT Trainer and a professional presenter, so I believe I can comment on how well a person can simply talk to a group of people. Michael Caine in my opinion and possibly being bias as we are both Cockneys is the absolute master of doing so. Perfect timing and delivery with the ability to mix humour in a sentence and then make a very salient sad emotive comment at the same time. Yes he learnt much at acting school and his experience over the years but accepting my world was working with teachers, lecturers and trainers plus teaching teachers, I knew many that had taught for decades, but I rarely came across truly natural 'communicators' that were born to stand or sit if front of people and talk to them. Michael Caine in his acting world was a truly NATURAL communicator and one of the best there has ever been. Even though his job was mainly to learn and act out scripts, he was able as Robin Williams could off the top of his head, come out with sentences that made people laugh, which other actors and comedians often paid writers to create for them and then ensure the interviewer would ask questions so they could repeat learnt lines and pretend they came up with the funny or clever answer themselves. Michael never needed that and more so he could go on for hours and people would want him to do so, as I was told by a camera operator who knew him well.
@allie fisher I did not know he was in Korea ...Thanks. He really is great....his solid personality comes through , right through the screen . He was A-1 Tops in ...The Quiet American with Fraser.
Back around 1990 I worked in the Dallas area. A local talk show host was doing one of those "off site" interviews with Caine at a Half Price Books location near my office (Caine was publicizing and signing copies of his new autobiography). When I found out, I left work, drove to the book store, and spent the next couple of hours hanging out around the table listening to him reminisce and tell stories about the movies he had worked in and the people he had worked with. A "peak experience" I will always treasure.
Alfie is a very underrated movie. I've always been fascinated by the way Michael Cain would stop and talk to the camera and everyone else around were totally unaware.
Alfie was a massive hit all over the world (except France, apparently) and it made Caine's career. It's not "underrated", it's just nearly 60 years old, so younger people may not have seen it. As for speaking directly to the camera, while Caine is brilliant at it, that's in the script.
Michael Caine brings something special to a movie role. I love all of his movies, especially Sleuth, Hannah and Her Sisters, Zulu, and later Flawless and Harry Brown.Glad this video was recommended May 2021.
Saw him in N.Y. He is such a gentleman and such a good actor! Enjoyed his movies and enjoyed his acting. He seemed to put himself down and praised other actors but truth is truth believe we all enjoyed his performance!
The assistant and partner comment at the end was something being saved because it meant so much to Michael. He is the humblest man ever and this would have been a life defining moment for him and one he shares with the greatest humility. You’ll not meet another famous, legendary actor who would share his sandwich with the average man. God I love him.
We don't have a star system in the uk, actors surrounded by security and assistants would be laughed at. But he exemplifies how an actor should behave. There's no scandal, no pap walks, no gossip. He goes to work and goes home.
Here he is... A British actor who could play an American with that British accent and be totally Believable.! He is more magician than actor...which is a big complement.
And its the role in which the famous film critic Pauline Kael gave Caine a rare glowing review and lauded him as one of the greatest actors of the day. And he couldn't even mention it. Disappointing. No villa in the south of france i guess....
I want to watch Sleuth again... two bravura performances and MC matched LO every way and got that fantastic compliment from LO. My late Father worked with MC and Christopher Plummer on the Hamlet 1964 movie, he was the recording engineer. True story.
I remember seeing Sleuth in the theater at 14 years old & being mesmerized by Caine & Olivier. It wasn't until I got home that I realized they were the only 2 actors in the movie!
It is astonishing that this brilliant and humble man is not the highest paid actor in the history of cinema… but I guess he accepted parts that probably had an average fee and then turned them into the most brilliant piece of cinema … may he live long and prosper…. 🖖

He's made some classic films, my particular favorites of his are; Get Carter , Zulu, Man who would be King , The Italian Job, Educating Rita and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Still remember him in the Ipcress File. Saw it so many times when it first came out. What an enjoyable actor to watch - in every film he's ever been in.
Funny, I was just thinking about that very film. My sister took me to see it when I was a kid, I'm sure I only picked it because of the girl on the poster. I hope she at least marginally enjoyed it, I doubt it was her cup of tea at all but she took me out for the day and gave me free choice of what to go and see.
One of my all time favourites. Devastating, but also entertaining right through. Their characters were so completely at odds. The first time I watched it, I completely didn't expect that twist. So perfectly executed.
What a great, great man. Thank you Sir Michael Caine for all your great work. And if you really don't want to do new movies anymore just continue to tell those stories!
Said Nivens ..the Moon is a Balloon is another Incredible book...and I Mean Incredible..should say " David Niven". The stories he tells there are out of this World *
Would you want to direct the remake and be compared to the original? I watched it again recently...still an amazing movie. (cost of extras would be horrendous now)
War is always racist. But there is some respect given to the Zulu impi's. "They can run twenty miles in the morning, and win a battle in the afternoon." (I may have the exact figures wrong). My analysis is, that the British took South Africa from the Dutch Afrikaaners, who took it from the Zulus, who had taken it from the previous African inhabitants! Notice also that the victorious little company are not English Brigadiers, they are Welsh Engineers!
Fascinating interview. My wife and I attended the Film Society Of Lincoln Center gala for Caine several years ago and enjoyed it immensely. He is a world class actor and a wonderful guy.
Nothing he could not do, and do it so well. Many of his great works are mentioned here, but for comedy, WITHOUT A CLUE, with Ben Kingsley, is one of my favourites. His list of great movies goes on and on.
Am I the only one who could listen to him all night??
His humbleness gets me. A great actor that many actors would love to be considered as good as, and yet he always talks about the people HE "looked up to."
What a legend.
Standard British reserve and "not putting oneself forward".
That's possibly because of his lower class background on top of any natural modesty, In the UK these things matter.
Have you watched his Parkinson interview in which he tells about his family in the early days? Fascinating!

One of the greatest film actors of all time. Sleuth was absolutely killer. I need to see it again. Extremely powerful.
One of my all time favourites. Devastating, but also entertaining right through. Their characters were so completely at odds. The first time I watched it, I completely didn't expect that twist. So perfectly executed.
‘I said: “well I’ve already thought about the part”.’ 😂
he's also wonderful in Little Voice and Cider House Rules. Probably my fav actor of all time.
What a great, great man. Thank you Sir Michael Caine for all your great work. And if you really don't want to do new movies anymore just continue to tell those stories!
He's such a great storyteller:)
Years ago I read his first autobiography and it was really great and you might enjoy it
Said Nivens ..the Moon is a Balloon is another Incredible book...and I Mean Incredible..should say " David Niven". The stories he tells there are out of this World *
Greatest Michael Caine Movie: ZULU, one of the greatest films ever made and a film NO ONE has the courage to do today!
vince33x sad but true it would probably be called racist now.
not about courage...it just wouldnt get off the ground. Political correcntess and all that
Would you want to direct the remake and be compared to the original? I watched it again recently...still an amazing movie.
(cost of extras would be horrendous now)
War is always racist. But there is some respect given to the Zulu impi's. "They can run twenty miles in the morning, and win a battle in the afternoon." (I may have the exact figures wrong).
My analysis is, that the British took South Africa from the Dutch Afrikaaners, who took it from the Zulus, who had taken it from the previous African inhabitants!
Notice also that the victorious little company are not English Brigadiers, they are Welsh Engineers!
psst ...(brits march 20.....zulus run 50 and fight a battle at the end of it.)
hehe only watched the flick 20 times.. so...
"You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!!!"
We're gonna need a Bigger Boat
What a lovely bloke. Not many geezers like this one left!
Bloody marvelous.
Sleuth and The Man Who Would Be king are astounding films.
Michale Caine is an acting genius. Nuff said.
Genius is overused, and I'm not sure if anyone really deserves the adjective for acting...but he's very good at what he does. One of my favorites.
Come On! Every body Loves Michael !
Michael Caine is such a treasure. What talent!
I have always loved his stories. So humble.
Fascinating interview. My wife and I attended the Film Society Of Lincoln Center gala for Caine several years ago and enjoyed it immensely. He is a world class actor and a wonderful guy.
This needs to be an hour longer. Such interesting anecdotes.
Fourth Protocol and The Whistleblower. Michael is pure talent and totally relatable.
I love Educating Rita. Brilliant.....!!
Nothing he could not do, and do it so well. Many of his great works are mentioned here, but for comedy, WITHOUT A CLUE, with Ben Kingsley, is one of my favourites. His list of great movies goes on and on.
"I've already thought about the part..." How funny! I could listen to him tell stories for pretty much the rest of my life.
It's like he could never believe his luck playing this game at those stakes, it's like he's in constant awe about even being invited to the table.
