I remember when I was at school, a kid started playing yugioh that had Chaos Emperor Dragon. However, the way he played it, and none of us really knew this was wrong due to our knowledge of the card, was that it's effect to remove everything from your hand and the field didn't include Chaos Emperor Dragon itself - so he'd draw it, it hit the board, he'd clear both hands and field - THEN hit you with a direct attack from C.E. Dragon. In hindsight, using Solemn Judgement might have been a good idea...
Considering I'm planning on introducing Yu-Gi-Oh to the country I'm staying in, that being Indonesia, I think I'd be the "old sage" kind of guy who stops these things from happening.
Not only you. In our country wayback 2008 the CED is the most powerful card because there's no description before saying that you cannot special summon it in the graveyard. So most of the players have a card Painful Choice which allows the user to get 5 cards on his deck and let the enemy choose which card will remain and the other 4 will be discarded to graveyard. So what players do is activate Painful Choice, get CED and 4 monsters with attribute of Light and Dark. By doing this CED can be summon even if it is on the graveyard. So when they rework the effect of CED they now added "Should be summoned from hand".
maybe because one of this circumstance..set man eater bug,,opponent activated shiled crush or worst ..opponent activated Nobleman of Crossout (remove from play set monster on filed then both player check from thier deck if any same copy from the banish monster, that cards also remove from play)

@@heidtb6746 Actually it matters a lot. With say Solemn Warning were you have to pay 2000 for it once you hit 2000 or less LP it becomes a dead card. With Solemn Judgement you could have 100 LP but you could still activate the card so it's always useful.
@@bdf1006 I know what you mean and i understand your argument, but... You either draw Solemns in your opening hand or you dont play any this game... And if you get them early enough, LP dont matter (like 2000 for Warning or 1500 for Strike...) In maybe 1% of the duels where solemns were played, they ended up being dead because of LP...
EXCEPT that a uneven amount of LP can lock this card, you cannot pay half of 7975 LP for example. Considering YGO numbers this was rarely the case but could be done.

@FuturePants Good bit of backpedalling here after making a really stupid comment, it's okay not everyone is man enough to admit mistakes, that's why i pointed it out for ya. ;)
Back when I still played YGO (a very long time ago, near the beginning of the game), CED was one of the most dominant forces around. Chaos decks were pretty much everywhere. Rarely, you would see specific decks that tried to counter them. The Yata-CED lockout was the most popular way to win the game for a while. It was actually pretty toxic, because it was so strong that everyone played it and it homogenized the game. So you'd think that they'd welcome the ban-list, because it opened up the possibilities for a wider variety of decks again, but the exact opposite was true. Everyone pissed and moaned about it, because they just lost their favourite/only good deck. It was nice seeing it on this list to bring back memories from those days, lol. I played the game for a few years after that, but that's the only time in the game where I considered the meta to be boring and stifling. Ofcourse, I have no idea what it's like these days. The game now is a different beast from when I used to play.
I almost beat a towers player in ygo pro once when towers were a thing once with my SOLAR FLARE DRAGONS. But he finished me with cowboy. It was a short period of time when I got back into yugioh, saw how crazy it was, and eventually quit.
While i generally agree with what youre saying... i dont think disallow would be very competitive at 0 mana pay 10 life, unless youre playing Vintage or potentially Legacy 🤣🤣🤣
I think you know what you must do now: Top 10 Strongest Archetypes of All Time. - Meta relevance - How long they saw play - Tier average - How many cards got put onto the Ban List, etc.
yeah but PePe could brick , dragon rulers it was not possible to brick and even shit on decks that were supposed to counter it perfectly like "evilswarm" and even after the babies got banned plant rulers was arguably stronger since it had way more options @@sadrobot5501
I'm from the time when Yugioh starts as a tcg and I'm here to state the follow: We understand the effect of the card (solemn Judgment), it was just that at that times, there wasn't any strong reason to play it often, back then you just have to fear Raigeki, Dark Hole, Delinquent Duo, monster reborn, mirror force and Harpies Feather's Duster and solemn judgment feels like a real situational card because it was just for that cards that you can already easily negate with seven tools or even magic jammer. So please don't call us "slow learners" hahahaha
Ah, Yata-Garasu, one of the few times I used a Tier 0 strategy in my local tournament before it got banned. I just remembered something on the topic of Chaos Emperor Dragon, what about his counterpart, Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning? Blue Eyes level strength that could attack twice per turn if he got a kill, or he could banish 1 monster your opponent controls.
@@undeadinside3571 my dude knows what he's talking about. I mean, several spirits have devastating effects and they can only be normal summoned. My personal fave is Hinokagutsuchi
Great maju garzet The effect of maju is to gain the atk of the monster used to tribute summon it by 2x It's a beat stick from hell if you use a low restriction special summon deck containing for example tricky and one time passcode Could also fusion summon a high atk monster and turn around and tribute it If you're still not convinced then this example should help: tricky (2000 atk) is special summoned then tributed for the summon of great maju garzet, maju's atk becomes 4000
The reason why Solemn was rarely used back in the day was because half of someone's LP for 1 card wasn't a great trade, as most decks were pretty linear (And contained a lot of redundancy). Not only that, but cards like Magic Cylinder, Ring of Destruction and Ceasefire made it extremely risky to lower your LP.
Exactly. At first, there were very few cards that had powerful enough effects to be such a threat and even fewer situations making them worth half of your lifepoints. It was a simpler time more focused on the highest atk instead of card effects, and paying half of your lifepoints wasn't worth the risk except to stop a magic cylinder that would have prevented your win or a polymerization with 3 blue-eyes out. Then when some more powerful and more dangerous effects came out, it saw more viable use.
This. Somehow it bothered me how he seemed to imply that players back then were simply too stupid to realize its potential. People saw its potential, but the risk of having low Life Points and dying to a topdeck outweighed the denial of a single card in the eyes of many.
I always played 3 copies on every deck. Ppl would tell me how much it sucked but I new better. Those same ppl would be shocked when I beat them with it
All good points, in the modern meta most duels last 2-3 turns and the ones that don’t tend to be deemed closer than duels where the LP values are close. If a duel isn’t over in the first few turns it usually results in both players stalling out until one finally gets card advantage, can run their engine and deal 8,000+ damage fairly easily, so Solemn Judgment is incredibly valuable and the only staple trap card I always play 😂 It’s one of those that’s sometimes easier to time against meta decks cause you know their key plays, rogue decks can sometimes catch you off guard and if that happens you’re probably going to lose anyway. Mostly monster effects dominate the game now which has made me use Book of Eclipse more in order to shut down early monster effect combos.
Spellbook player here, can confirm during spellbook's peak i would pull off plus 7s in the majority of duels, that deck was crazy consistent. I remember many times where i just wouldn't take the full search of Spellbook of Judgement due to hand size limit, generally i'd empty my hand by the end phase and set down unused spellbooks then go plus 6 in hand and special summon the level 7 or the level 9(which was mostly never run). That deck had many fun combos and could go into rank 7s like big eye and dracossack which were crazy strong(and expensive) at the time.
@@Safersephiroth777 actually you'd go for 10 to 15 monsters and the rest were yea spellbooks, and other generic useful spells because judgement effect counts from any spell cards, not specificly spellbooks therefore spell draw cards like upstart goblin would help you get the total number of spells used that turn crazy high and allow you to do those insane searches and special summon a strong spellcaster ontop and even in bad hands where your spellcount was something like a 3 you could special summon a level 3 spellcaster Prophesy(that was the archetype for the monsters of the spellbook archetype with the exception of the level 2 that had spellbook in its named and was able to be searched with other spellbook spell cards) whose effect is to banish itself and give you 2 searches 1 for a level 5 or higher light/dark spellcaster and another for any spellbook spell card. And its effect could be activated during the same end phase judgement resolved therefore giving you a plus 4 for a spellcount of 3.

Tyrant Neptune's effect includes copying the effects of a monster in the graveyard. So by dumping Independent Nightingale into the GY, you can copy its effect of ATK increase and unaffected by card effects. Basically a much beefier and easier to summon version of Ultimate Falcon.
As a herald player, I actually had a pretty good matchup against spellbooks. As long as I could get my ritual summon off early, I could severely hinder my opponent's ability to utilize their hand advantage or even slow it's generation and it only got better after they introduced Dragon Princess Saphira which allowed my to pump out my own hand advantage and do some crazy things.
Wow, no supreme king starving venom, I’m seriously surprised a card that gets over 4K attack, makes it so ALL of your monsters do piercing, and can shuffle field and grave back to the deck with a stupid easy combo in odd-eyes xd
@@maple1234567890321 because Nightingale itself isn't broken. The monsters in question's effects became broken by existing stuff like Nightingale. Then Virtual World monsters easily turned or brought L9s out, making it stupidly easy to summon.
I remember winning a dozen tournaments in between the releases of Metal Raiders and Pharaoh's Servant where I was running 3x Solemn Judgment...I had traded a Magic Jammer, a Horn of Heaven, and a Sanga of the Thunder for them. I basically intrinsically knew that the only life point that matters is the last one from the moment I started playing...a philosophy that served me well in Magic also. I also ran two Jirai Gumo in that same deck, and won four finals duels at less than 50 life points in a three week span. I was single-handedly responsible for one of my local card shops doubling their prices on single copies of Solemn, as there were runs on their stock by opponents I beat...it's just such a wall card, at least back when most of the good monster effects were flip effects. It's still quite good, but not as good as it was in 2002/2003.
What kind of drugs were they using when they created the spellbook archetype? Nobody likes to play against that and it gained the nickname „slowbooks“.

Regarding number 10, the fact that trap cards have increasingly become marginalized in Yugioh is why I strongly believe the game is no longer operating as originally intended. The game was never meant to play as quickly as it is now. The cards have gotten to be too broken, so broken that what was originally a fundamental part of the game (trap cards) aren’t that useful anymore.
You are definitely right. Also to add Monsters and half of the new spells does what traps does but better. There's monsters that can negate effects, quick play spells can enable crazier combos and disrupts more than traps. The only trap cards that are seeing play are the newer cards that can activate from the hand instead of set pass as it was intended or Solemn Counter Traps. The game has gotten way too fast that duels can end from turn 1-3 85% of the time and 4-5 15% of the time don't get beyond unless it's stun, burn, or final countdown decks. I can understand if the duel ends from turns 4-10 but 1-3 is ridiculous too fast and degenerate boards to the point where the opponent can play Yugioh is downright stupid and turns new comers and returning players off from Yugioh.
Well this is false, I don't really get where does the "nobody play traps now" idea come from, but it's absolutely not true. Everyone is playing trap cards like the Solemns, Torrential Tribute, Crackdown, Summon Limit, There Can Be Only One, Gozen Match, Rivalry of the Warlords, Survival's End, Appointer of the Red Lotus, Dogmatika Punishment, Salamangreat Rage, Virtual World Gate - Chuche, Shaddol's Schism, Imperial Order, Skill Drain, Anti-Spell Fragrance, Artifact Sanctum *to name a few* . We even had/used to have Tier 1 Decks who are based on trap cards ( Eldlich, Zoodiac, Subterror, Altergeist... )

Hei Blackreaper that card by itself doesn’t do anything except make you go -5 in card economy, it doesn’t do anything else by itself, did you not hear what he said? He said “powerful cards on their own”, not “best combo cards”, if he had said that then I would agree with you, but in this caste you’re dead wrong, Painful Choice is a “combo” card, not a card that nukes the field, is unaffected by everything, has ridiculous attack and is easy to summon, see where I’m going with this? Almost every card in his list falls under that category
@@knightmarecx2069 Painful Choice is a 1 for 1 in terms of card advantage. You lose P.C. to add a card to your hand, the cards you send to the GY don't count towards advantage

I used four of the cards here, mostly the old ones especially CED in Yugioh online. It was really OP back then if you allow all cards, but it wasn't auto win when spellbooks arrived even when you don't use ban lists.
No, it really wouldn't be fine. You could use him in a combo deck that can burn to set up an FTK. Burn, have a ton of cards on the field, effect, and massive burn and they have no hand for if they survive.

I remember when Invasion of Chaos first came out and thinking wow this set is OP, due to the chaos monsters being able to banish cards. CED-EOTD was unstoppable.
At the time it wasn't useful in caveman yugioh because there's no cards in 2003 that had effects when being in the graveyard. Today we have a ton load of decks and cards that activates when they hit the graveyard. Painful Choice is reversed powercreped so it's insanely broken today's standards.
@@inquisitrmikey7920 It was already insanely broken because of all the graveyard summoning available at the time (and even magician of faith)/ and material usage in chaos decks, as well as turning your deck into a 35 card deck, selectively thinning out what would be dead draws at the time.
Dude! I remember I won a regionals using Last Turn, Wall of Revealing Light and freaking Wall of Illusion in order to cheese my opponents. It was freaking awesome! And back before "Cost" was a thing, any life points paid counted as Damage so I would combine Wall of Revealing Light with Barrel Behind the Door in order to kill people in a single turn. Mostly used this combo on friends who would pull really dickish moves like stacking their decks to spam Blue Eyes Ultra in their first turns.

I run one solemn warning and it really stumps my opponents and I find the trap cards should be played in decks more often than people say people say they’re slow that’s actually not true but it depends on who you ask
I still have my 1 edition last turn. 1 of my favorite cards period. Won it at a flea market dude told me to pick a card (both were face down of course) and picked last turn.

Loved to play Yugioh when I was in middle school. The cards were simple to understand and use, played with friends, had great time... Couple years later, there's these XYZ, Pendulum and I can't understand how to play with them.
XZY same levels on field that's listed on XYZ monster I.e Utopia 2 level 4's which was easy in the anime due to a card which when summoned you can special Summon a level 4 or lower from hand. It goes underneath the card and that's XYZ materials. Pendulum god only knows
>Xyz *Xyz monsters are black.* *Overlay ( yea literally ) two monsters who matches the condition written on a xyz monster ( e.g the xyz monster Tornado Dragon requires you any two level 4 monsters )* , then special summon the xyz monster from your extra deck on top of the overlayed monsters. *Xyz don't have levels but ranks (black stars)* , which means they are unnafected by every effect who includes Levels. *If an xyz monster requires you to "detach an xyz material" then send 1 of the monsters you overlayed to the graveyard*, if an xyz monsters leaves the field send every overlayed monster to the graveyard. >Links *Link Monsters have blue hexagons on them, they also have orange arrows* who is drawn around their artworks Link Monsters *don't have Defense points and can't be put in defense position* Link Monsters *don't have Ranks or Levels, but a Link Rating* who is written next to their ATK points, in the place where DEF points usually are. *Send a number of monsters from your field to the GY who is equal to the Link Rating of the monster you want to summon, following their summoning requirements* ( e.g the Link Monster "Wee Witch's Apprentice" requires two DARK monsters to be link summoned, while the "Link Spider" monster requires you just 1 normal monster ) . Monsters who aren't Links are worth 1, Links are worth either 1 or their Link Rating *(so 2 Link monsters with a Link Ratings of 2 can make a Link monster with a Link Rating of 4, for instance)* Any monster a Link Monster points to with one of it's arrows is said to be "linked", two Link Monsters that point at each other are "co-linked". >Pendulums Pendulums monster are *half-monsters and half-spells*, you can summon them as monsters ( in which case their effect will be their regular monster effect ) or *place face-up in in your "Pendulum Zones", which are the leftmost and rightmost S/T Zones, as continous spells* ( if a pendulum monster is in the pendulum zone, *then it's effect will be it's "pendulum effect" who are written in a textbox above the monster effect textbox* ) . Next to their pendulum effects there is two numbers, who depicts their *pendulum scales* ( it will be useful for later ) When a Pendulum Monster *would be sent from the field to the GY, it goes to the Extra Deck face-up instead* (doesn't apply if it's send to your hand or deck, banished or detached from an Xyz monster). Once per turn, you can Pendulum Summon as many monsters from your hand or your face-up Extra Deck whose Levels are between those of the cards' Pendulum Scales ( e.g if I have a pendulum monster with a pendulum scale of *2* in my right pendulum zone, and a pendulum monster with a pendulum scale of *6* in my left zone, *then I can pendulum summon as many monsters from my hand or face-up extra deck who have a level of either 3,4 or 5* Both Links and Pendulums who where face-up in the extra deck can only be Summoned in the Extra Monster Zones or in Main Monster Zones Link Monsters point to. I have defeated decks with strong cards such as the Apoquiphort Towers in the video with Amazoness Swords Woman. such a great card. the stronger the monster gets the more damage she does and it doesnt matter how immune the monster is, the damage effect still applies.
Back in the early 2010s it was crazy how we had a format where heavy storm was band and MST was limited, so there was no mass backrow removal. As a result setting a bunch of cards was super super common. Once storm got unbanned, watching traps slowly disappear out of decks until it was just the solemn brigade (two warnings and judgement) really was something.
Heavy Storm is still banned. Debateably it shouldn't be, but it's unbanning wasn't necessarily what caused trap cards to become less prevelant in decks.
@@ondank it spent less than 2 years limited between late 2011 and early 2013, but that's about it. I wouldn't call that a "long time", and certainly not what I'd point to as the reason decks contain less traps than before.
@@ondank Yes, and I don't recall a single person in that era going "shit, heavy storm is legal now? I guess we should drastically cut the number of traps we have in our decks for that reason alone (and literally no other reason), and continue doing so even after it's banned again" And given that we have historical data to look at (which is a lot better than going by vague recollections of what was going on 12 years ago), it seems my memory is 100% correct in that manner. Traps have been on a steady decline for most of yugioh's 20+ year history, so it's a little silly to peg Heavy Storm's legality in a less-than-2-year period as the reason.

Judgement's half your LP thing is also good because it's always half, not a static like Strike or Warning.
Okay, that doesnt really matter with being limited, but at more copies, it would make a difference
And if you get them early enough, LP dont matter (like 2000 for Warning or 1500 for Strike...)
In maybe 1% of the duels where solemns were played, they ended up being dead because of LP...
EXCEPT that a uneven amount of LP can lock this card, you cannot pay half of 7975 LP for example. Considering YGO numbers this was rarely the case but could be done.

As soon as I saw Solemn at 10, I made sure to make some popcorn and hunker down lol
With only 1 Life point left Solemn can win the game !

@FuturePants But it is on this list, we already know it's not on a ban list since he said it's not and this isn't a top 10 banned cards list you pleb.

Blue Eyes level strength that could attack twice per turn if he got a kill, or he could banish 1 monster your opponent controls.

yata garasu number one
And amano iwato is at least top 3

Great maju garzet
The effect of maju is to gain the atk of the monster used to tribute summon it by 2x
It's a beat stick from hell if you use a low restriction special summon deck containing for example tricky and one time passcode
Could also fusion summon a high atk monster and turn around and tribute it
If you're still not convinced then this example should help: tricky (2000 atk) is special summoned then tributed for the summon of great maju garzet, maju's atk becomes 4000
Card Car D
So it was that good right? You had like 5 monsters in the deck and all other were spellbook cards right?

Where does Tyrant Neptune gain the effect of being unaffected by everything?
That's what I want to know too
It's one of Independent Nightningale's effects. DuelLogs seems to have used a proxy that missed that part. Look up its effect.
Tyrant Neptune's effect includes copying the effects of a monster in the graveyard. So by dumping Independent Nightingale into the GY, you can copy its effect of ATK increase and unaffected by card effects. Basically a much beefier and easier to summon version of Ultimate Falcon.
Fire Hunterz you need to tribute it

Basically Pacific Rim.

XZY same levels on field that's listed on XYZ monster I.e Utopia 2 level 4's which was easy in the anime due to a card which when summoned you can special Summon a level 4 or lower from hand. It goes underneath the card and that's XYZ materials. Pendulum god only knows
>Xyz
*Xyz monsters are black.*
*Overlay ( yea literally ) two monsters who matches the condition written on a xyz monster ( e.g the xyz monster Tornado Dragon requires you any two level 4 monsters )* , then special summon the xyz monster from your extra deck on top of the overlayed monsters.
>Links
*Link Monsters have blue hexagons on them, they also have orange arrows* who is drawn around their artworks
Link Monsters *don't have Defense points and can't be put in defense position*
Link Monsters *don't have Ranks or Levels, but a Link Rating* who is written next to their ATK points, in the place where DEF points usually are.
Monsters who aren't Links are worth 1, Links are worth either 1 or their Link Rating *(so 2 Link monsters with a Link Ratings of 2 can make a Link monster with a Link Rating of 4, for instance)*
Any monster a Link Monster points to with one of it's arrows is said to be "linked", two Link Monsters that point at each other are "co-linked".

Pendulums monster are *half-monsters and half-spells*, you can summon them as monsters ( in which case their effect will be their regular monster effect ) or *place face-up in in your "Pendulum Zones", which are the leftmost and rightmost S/T Zones, as continous spells* ( if a pendulum monster is in the pendulum zone, *then it's effect will be it's "pendulum effect" who are written in a textbox above the monster effect textbox* ) . Next to their pendulum effects there is two numbers, who depicts their *pendulum scales* ( it will be useful for later )
When a Pendulum Monster *would be sent from the field to the GY, it goes to the Extra Deck face-up instead* (doesn't apply if it's send to your hand or deck, banished or detached from an Xyz monster).
Once per turn, you can Pendulum Summon as many monsters from your hand or your face-up Extra Deck whose Levels are between those of the cards' Pendulum Scales ( e.g if I have a pendulum monster with a pendulum scale of *2* in my right pendulum zone, and a pendulum monster with a pendulum scale of *6* in my left zone, *then I can pendulum summon as many monsters from my hand or face-up extra deck who have a level of either 3,4 or 5*
Both Links and Pendulums who where face-up in the extra deck can only be Summoned in the Extra Monster Zones or in Main Monster Zones Link Monsters point to. Xyz monsters can be summoned in the main monster zones or in the extra monster zone
@@underpressure1954 thanks man, ive been getting back into yugioh a little bit lately, and now i finally have a decent understanding of how the convoluted mechanics that ive been seeing for years work.
Dark Armed Dragon is unlimited in OCG, and Semi-Limited in the TCG
I agreed with your statement about the Dragon ruler engine being more powerful than the deck.
Guardragon is not a powerful deck, but their engine is broke AF.
Havent played since the very first xyz-monsters came out (Utopia etc.), but I still enjoy watching these!
I have defeated decks with strong cards such as the Apoquiphort Towers in the video with Amazoness Swords Woman. such a great card. the stronger the monster gets the more damage she does and it doesnt matter how immune the monster is, the damage effect still applies.
I like how you don't even try to pronounce Rhongomyniad lmao. Everytime you just cut it off at "Heroic Champion" was funny to me lol.
Apparently OCG doesn't think that Spellbook of Judgement is the most broken/strongest card of all time
Next vid should be: Top explicit card arts.
Zero Kiero 0 cards from the TCG and every card being from the OCG.
@@NickersonGeneral it's gone back to being banned. It spent a long time unbanned
@@ondank it spent less than 2 years limited between late 2011 and early 2013, but that's about it. I wouldn't call that a "long time", and certainly not what I'd point to as the reason decks contain less traps than before.
@@NickersonGeneral did you play during that era. Because it really don't sound like it
@@ondank Yes, and I don't recall a single person in that era going "shit, heavy storm is legal now? I guess we should drastically cut the number of traps we have in our decks for that reason alone (and literally no other reason), and continue doing so even after it's banned again"
And given that we have historical data to look at (which is a lot better than going by vague recollections of what was going on 12 years ago), it seems my memory is 100% correct in that manner. Traps have been on a steady decline for most of yugioh's 20+ year history, so it's a little silly to peg Heavy Storm's legality in a less-than-2-year period as the reason.
very nice video man , keep up the good work!
And that's how I now have 3 spellbook of judgment in my binder lol
I was just like DUDE YOU FORGOT THE CARD THAT SINGLE HANDEDLY PUT DRAGON RULERS IN ITS PLACE HOW COULD YOU POSSIBLY FORGET oh there it is
Spellbook of judgment?🙄
So glad my favorite deck has the strongest card! Also, never lost to a dragon ruler deck :P
I remember the overwhelming number of DaD decks, even though not exactly the meta, I went for a Chaos-DaD deck, didn't perform all that bad to be honest, even after the limitation, because DaD was both a bossmonster AND a resource
Ignition effects is actually priority ignition effects are a type of effect priority is what he means with dark armed
I still think Chaos Emperor Dragon is possibly the strongest card there ever was
Not really
On my way to make a deck with all those cards
Solemn Judgement = Golden Experience Requiem/10
Card designer must have so much fun making those card
TYRANT NEPTUNE!!! I was so happy to see my dear baby on this list!! That was the ultimate boss monster of my main childhood deck. I don't remember exactly the names of the cards I used with it, something something drillbit hedgehog. I had a pretty good setup for it, but nowhere near as broken as the setup described here. I had no idea other people found such good use for it! Good times.
