You have some beautiful nano tanks plus the Medaka’s are very lovely too! 🐟 Great video! I have four outdoor ponds here in Australia and my fish are breeding and have bundles of eggs daily. I’ve read through the comments to realise only 11 made it but that’s still okay!😊. In my personal experience, I’ve found that the less fuss, the better in terms of eggs hatching and raising fry from Medaka’s. All I do is put the spawning mops in jars with pond / green water, leave in the sun outside and have literally 100’s of fry swimming around within one week. I only learnt this by accident as I tried everything to hatch and raise the fry but nothing was working until I just left them alone. They are very hardy and will survive better outdoors but I guess everyone has different experiences. I have so many eggs from three different strains I may have to start selling them myself as I cannot keep up with so many fry! Wishing you all the best! Sorry my post was so long!
Thank you very much for the comment! I have moved some of them to a larger tank and they are now breeding. I got some very tiny fry on a breeder box now. However I am not sure where they placed the eggs, I have a small I have a spawning mop there but no eggs. I think my Aquascaping is getting in the way of breeding these using mops. I have small ponds outside, I think I will be doing just that and putting eggs(when I find them) out and see how they do. I feel like I am just getting on the ricefish with the egg hunt and breeder boxes. I do want to order more in the future, or perhaps I will get some other killifish. @@TheNanoAquariumGuy yes I agree about the plants in the tanks, I removed a lot of the floating plants and once I did that they dropped their eggs on the mops (I make my own with the pool noodle and scouring pads) , not the yarn mops. If you remove floating plants with large roots they will most likely have eggs on them so you can just place those in a bowl or jar with pond water and they will hatch in them. I also don’t use methalyne blue as I want to leave them alone after they hatch and they feed off the green algae in the water. Good luck and btw your nano tanks are beautiful!

Another great video! I bought 12 medaka ricefish for a display tank from Aqua Huna about a year ago. They were all supposed to be "Pearl Galaxy, " but some turned out to be Red Cap/Koi (which go for about $12+ each online - when you can find them). After I noticed some were carrying eggs, I made a scrub pad-type spawning mop and started collecting eggs daily. I put them in a little plastic container with a drop of methylene blue, a shred of java moss, and an airstone just bairly bubbling. It took around two weeks from collecting to hatching, and I had about a 90 percent hatch rate. I finally stopped collecting the eggs because I had around 150 live fish spread across one 20-gallon and one 10-gallon tank. I've been selling the Red Caps to an LFS for $4 each in store credit, but they only want a dozen at a time. I'd really like to clear out my Red Caps so I can breed other fish. I'm going to put the Pearl Galaxy's in a future display tank. My actual point is, ricefish are super easy to breed, but you have to be intentional about it. Any fry that happen to hatch in an aquarium are usually going to get eaten. The fry are very hardy and easy to raise - in multitudes. And the fish are beautiful!
Nice! For some reason mine stopped laying eggs on the top and now they go to the bottom to lay eggs and make it very hard to pick eggs now. I gotta figure out how to collect eggs. I plan to move to a new home so I hope I can have some breeding tanks once I do.
I'm telling you, a scrub pad spawning mop is the way to go. You make one with a plain scotch brite scour pad and about an inch off a pool noodle. Cut the pad from one edge to about an inch from the opposite edge, making several cuts about a half inch wide. It should look kinda like fringe. Shake and rinse off any dust. Then roll it up and stuff the uncut edge into the pool noodle hole, trimming off what doesn't fit. Squirt some super glue or hot glue around the top and bottom of the pool noodle hole to hold in place. Trim the ends if it's too long. I would float it for two to three days, then pull it out, pick off the eggs, rinse, and return it to the tank. With maybe five females, I averaged about 20 eggs each time. You can float the spawning mop toward the back of the tank if you find it unsightly. Sorry if you already know about this, but maybe someone else will find it helpful.

Out of the 30 eggs, only 5 made it? Which of the smaller batches you split apart hatched have the highest success rate? I also have an external breeder box, which I think should work the best. I'm also considering buying some eggs online but they're like $114USD, kind of expensive if only a few hatches....
Hi, actually I ended up with 11 of them, and for me at least the external breeder box one was the one with that did not worked well for me. That's the one that had the most eggs. Not sure why. I did have a sponge on the overfill but perhaps somehow fry may have gone through. I want to try again once I can get eggs from mine and see. I am thinking maybe try an internal fry container this time. Also maybe try an egg tumbler but perhaps it is too much for ricefish. Next time I will try to be more scientific about it and take notes. Regardless I will buy more eggs from Japan in the future as I just don't see those in the American market yet.

Since, it comes with a breeding mop I wonder if you could just stuck the eggs onto it and let it float...maybe that could work? From what I've read, some people just put the eggs in tap water without dechlorinating it to keep the fungus away 🤔 Please make more videos of your process when you get more medaka eggs, I'll be sure to watch it lol

@@xKenn that is my best guess. Those fry like to stay on the top too so I am almost positive I lost some because of that.
