Damn Ryan, your "redemption arc" is one of the great stories of football, and I couldn't be more appreciative in how you handled all of it. The fact that when you talk to people who you related to in these times have the highest opinion of you and your stances to all of it nowadays just solidifies that fact. Thank you. From a random german guy who discovered his love for the sport years ago, thank you man. You're the human aspect in all of this, and you know what you're talking about. Wholesome to say the least.

It's only fitting that the guy who became the poster child of draft busts is also the one who ends up in prison with Peyton Manning(his 'rival' of the draft) writing him before completely turning it around to the point that fans are supporting him in his media ventures now. You couldn't write that, it would be too ridiculous, too cliche, your quintessential "...oh c'mon, what are the odds of ALL of that happening..." - but it's actually real life.
Hopefully he can now be a poster child for second chances and the capability we have to right our wrongs & turn our lives around. He's had a few incidents, perfection is unrealistic for anyone let alone with the sort of mental baggage he carries around, but hopefully he has things under control now. His story deserves the 'fairytale ending'.

I love Ryan’s honesty. I can’t imagine how many people that alone helps, not to mention all the work he does. Not many people would admit they tore up that letter, but he does. It shows the character he has and how serious he is about being a good man. A true role model.

I really enjoy listening to Ryan Leaf's interviews and talks. He is such a cool dude. And I love how he is out there now and not just miserable all these years later. One of the greatest comebacks in sports history in my opinion.

The Manning family really are "the best of us". Incredible humans in all facets life while never losing site of the importance of grace & humility. Thank you for what you do Ryan. As someone also fighting the recovery fight, it puts wind in my sails to see & hear someone with a platform that doesn't shy away from incorporating their story & who they are.

It's a funny life. It feels like this was the right path for Ryan to take all along. REALLY rate his ability in front of the camera like this and is enjoyable to listen to him for his insights and experiences. Most of all he looks and sounds so comfortable in this field. 'The Ryan Leaf Show', I'd watch it for sure.

Ryan impressed me every time he fills in for Rich. Intelligent, thoughtful, and honest.
Peyton setting a scholarship for a former teammate also impressed me. What did Peyton write in that letter to Ryan? Doesn’t really matter except that he wrote the letter.

I cry every time I watch a video with Ryan Leaf. A lot of people don’t understand how hard it is to overcome addiction - Most don’t. Truly an inspiration for those who struggle, because we all know someone who does. I’m so happy for him and pray for his every day struggle because as an addict, it’s every day, it doesn’t go away.

One thing I wonder with Ryan is how things could have turned out for him had he been able to go to a healthier organization with a better support system in place than San Diego. The dude definitely had major maturity issues and it’s certainly possible things would’ve happened as they did wherever he had ended up going but it is an interesting what if thing just to think on that hypothetical. Indy was a healthier landing spot for Peyton that committed to him and allowing him to struggle for awhile without jumping ship on him when he had struggles as all young QBs are going to have in those early years. Sure he demonstrated more potential in the struggles the first year but they stick with him through the whole thing despite throwing more interceptions than TDs and it paid off. Obviously a lot of that also had to do with his work ethic and attitude that encouraged sticking with him while Leaf had some abysmal games and a horrible attitude that probably made them hop off quickly like they did.
But when you look back they’d throw him to the wolves and then when he played badly they’d bench him and throw out somebody else to play badly until they got sick of the replacement playing badly where they toss Leaf back in again. Handling a young QB with preexisting attitude issues like that guarantees failure it seems. And while he was still bad his third season after the injury season the numbers were all improved over the rookie year so who knows what can happen if you truly commit and let him work things out. And then they sent him away and drafted Brees.
Then despite Bree’s playing fairly well they did the same thing with him in drafting Eli and landing with Rivers. They didn’t have any patience to let a guy struggle through to success and luckily rivers worked for them. But in hindsight Eli made a good call by pushing to go to NY. All in all maybe leaf was doomed but I’ll always wonder what would’ve been in a better environment that committed to his development with a staff that could’ve helped with his maturity. We saw first hand with Lawrence how big of a difference a healthy staff can make for a guy so I do wonder what that could’ve done for a guy like Leaf. Sometimes think it gets ignored that a player may do themselves no favors but being in a position to potentially succeed is also a major thing that gets overlooked a ton when labeling people as busts

Ryan Leaf really did have all the ability in the world- far more athletic than Manning. Just didn’t have it mentally. It’s awesome that he has since pulled it together. The pressure of being a first round draft pick in the NFL is no joke- it has destroyed many.
