  • One of the most mysterious characters in a song of ice and fire is Marwyn. His sudden appearance at the end of A Feast for Crows was fascinating and hinted at much deeper and more complicated clockwork moving beneath the surface. Who is Marwyn? In citadel he is called Marwyn the Mage, he is one of the few with a Valyrian steel link on his maesters chain, indicating his study of magic. Though Marwyn is an archmaester his is less respected than others due to the fact that he is the archmaester of magic. Marwyn has traveled the world, he spent eight years traveling distant lands searching for lost books studying with shadowbinders, and warlocks.

marwyn is actually the arch maester of the higher mysteries. they mockingly call him mage because of his interest in magic, though that isnt necessarily what the link, rod, and mask represent. magic is one of many higher mysteries to be sure, thus falling under its umbrella.

Neo Riv I’d highly disagree. It’s not as good as season 1 but if you’re giving up on the show and the characters you’ve grown attached to just because there isn’t enough tits or violence you should leave.

Mirri Maz Dur's spell didn't bring hatch the dragons. It was Dany, who likely was taught the spell by Quaithe in her dreams. Mirri was just a blood sacrifice in Dany's spell.

i think what mirri did to drogo is to make his body alive but without his soul. she probably knew how to properly bring people back from the dead but that wasn't her intention. she was angry with the dothraki and she basically killed their khal. she was just pretending to help dany but she was firm in her goal for revenge.

Wait - don't we already know from the supplemental materials that Asshai is technically IN the Shadowlands and that the Shadowlands typically refers to the dark lands outside of Asshai but on the same peninsula - including Stygai? It could be I'm getting my book lore and the stuff from the CK2 mod's suppositions mixed up.

I like the fact that to go forward you have to go back to the very beginning of the Bloodstone Emperor and church of starry wisdom from the shadowlands. A wonderful idea that Qyburn, Mirri and Marwyn may all be connected possibly fulfilling a prophecy. Mirri said she paid a great price possibly her own death to learn necromancy.

Seems more reasonable to say Martin used the character mentioned earlier in the books to serve a new role he made up for the books.
Also, her learning from a maester makes it more reasonable to the reader that Daenerys would let her try and heal Drogo.
Just because they met the archmaester and they all like magic doesnt mean it is reasonable to think they all practice it the same way.

So curious to see if the "important men" that were present at the first meeting of Dany and Drogo at Drogo's manse in book 1 are ever revisited. I remember GRRM made a point to note that there were only men there, no women. I have wondered if Marwyn, qyburn or Euron were some of them.

How did Mirri pay dearly for the lesson from the necromancer? Did she pay with her life? And was Mirri resurrected, and by Dany burning Mirri it was her CERTAIN death?

  • @Hurmeri
    @Hurmeri 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Strongly disagree with this one.
1: Qyburn has been established as the kind of person who will not balk at social taboos or controversial pursuits. Since Marwyn is the archmaester assigned to/entrusted with the Valyrian steel mask (possible RL analogue: the foremost professor of occultism?), he may have been the ultimate overseer of Qyburn's studies in that field, just like someone in Maester Luwin's student days oversaw Luwin's efforts to earn a Valyrian steel link to his chain.
Is there anything beyond this hierarchy (established in Game of of Thrones and Feast for Crows) that ties Qyburn and Marwyn in any way beyond this professor-student setup? Both are fascinated by the occult, yet Marwyn travels across the world while Qyburn stays in Westeros, serving as military surgeon to scum like the Brave Companions. Sounds like an acknowledged professional vs. exiled wanna-be.
2: Mirri Maz Duur was a physician/midwife/healer (you tell me what's the closest analogue for "godswife of the lamb people"). Some exotic western sage is willing to teach her about anatomy? Why wouldn't she take him up on the offer? She can learn more about curing people through such a shocking display. As for Drogo & the closing events of GoT.... She was someone who had EVERY reason to want revenge on an army of genocidal, slaving rapists. She had some knowledge of blood magic - possibly as an accepted part of being a "godswife" (aka. if one can't hack that part of the job, one will not be ordained/acknowledged as a godswife).
If this is an accurate reading of the characer (and every line she ever featured in supports it: as a side character whose death was written by 1996, what have we heard of her that contradicts this?), she lied to Dany and took her vengeance with Daenerys' unwitting help. No necromancy or half-zombies, just a chance for a learned woman to "poison" the Dothraki version of Genghis Khan so that he would die stillborn, rather than do what Dothraki culture would celebrate him doing (aka. lead a horde of murderers to rape, kill, enslave, burn, destroy etc. for potentially an entire lifetime).
Two different characters, both of whom have strong personal reasons for their actions.
Marwyn is the more enigmatic one, the only one out of the three who's driven by a larger ambition/a more selfless awareness of larger events. And even that's mainly because we have only vanishingly few glimpses into his thought processes, compared to Mirri or Qyburn.

    • @kawadashogo8258

"Both are fascinated by the occult, yet Marwyn travels across the world
while Qyburn stays in Westeros, serving as military surgeon to scum like
      the Brave Companions."
The Brave Companions are from across the Narrow Sea. They only came to Westeros because Tywin hired them to fight for him in the War of Five Kings. So Qyburn was abroad, and he only came back because the sellsword company came to Westeros, and he would have gone back beyond the Narrow Sea when the war was over except the company was destroyed and Qyburn found the patronage of the Lannisters. We don't know how long he's been with the Brave Companions, where else he's been or what else he did in exile.

See, that ONE SCENE made me quit on GRRMs books. He STILL hasn't moved his GD ice zombies south of the Wall, but he is throwing in 50 MORE subplots into a series which has far too many subplots?
Maybe if he only had to write for his core characters, he'd go a bit faster in his writing. So I don't give a damn about Marwyn. I hate Marwyn. His inclusion into the series is a woeful mistake because the series is already overwritten.

I'm boycotting and I'll be at for a different reason. I started these books in 1996 when the first edition came out. I didn't even read all of the last one because it had been so long since the one before that I would have had to read the entire series, start to finish, for the third time.
I am going to wait until GRRM finishes the series, because at this point it's like 50/50 that he finishes it before he dies. If he doesn't finish it before he strokes out, then you know they're going to hire some no talent ass clown to stamp out 13 more books based on all of his unwritten notes, no matter how incoherent they are. I am just not up for that ride.
When the last book is released, then I'll go along; I do agree that he'd have been finished by now if he hadn't introduced a thousanty-eleven new characters, though I do find most of them pretty epic.
