you can't beat a chopper/class 31/37 firing up with plenty of clagg and noise its hell fire class 37s are my favourite locomotive starting up as they're beasts 🥰😍🤩
Absolutely love the video!! I dunno how many times i coughed watching the locos starting 😂😂 had they all been made by vw emissions wouldn't of been an issue they would of had them sorted!! 🤦 someone said about the locos cold starting....i did read some where that back in the day BR kept locos running during cold weather/weekends for fear of them not starting or taking for ever to come to life, things we take for granted almost today turning a key pressing a button and its ready to go but can only imagine what a train was like to start in the cold 🥶🥶 cars of the day were bad enough!! Great video!!
BR did keep them running sometimes for days. I went to a shed where 20 x class 20 were running it was deafening, I asked why they did not shut them down over the weekend and they said because they do not start easily and can flatten the batteries.
Straight up question; What's the psychology of attraction to trains? I'm a novice but love these diesels; Deltics etc. Why? Is it because of the old cold war look to them? Dyfunctional Dalek attributes?
There's a proper way to fire a steam loco; a bright cherry red fire (which will quickly turn into a white hot fire when the blast gets pulling it through). Any smoke is unburnt fuel, caused by overfiring (too much fuel being put on at any one time).
Why are these engine not preheated? Cold starts are very bad for lifetime reasons. In Germany loco diesel engines are kept warm, therefore good starting with no smoke
@@phareztrinimand Smoke is unburned fuel. When a cold diesel engine has unburned fuel in the exhaust then a lot of this go pass the pistons into the engine oil.
Cost for a start. The majority of these locos are in preservation, where keeping costs down is paramount. It wasn’t always done in BR days, either. If a loco was stored away from facilities they’d start like this.
A lot of them don't have blockheaters/glowplugs/etc. - they were designed just to be cold-started and let the rough combustion heat the block up itself until it "caught"
Just watching this video , i can feel the temp of the planet rise by 2 degrees .......... 🤣 ( P.s Love these old diesels . I recall many moons ago , in my youth , starting old tractors on cold frosty mornings on a local farm , loved the smell of the diesel fumes .... ☠😵💫🤣) .
Hi there Again it is Mr Cannadine T. Boxill-Harris, I have another interesting idea for most of us Class 313, Class 314 and that also is including those interesting Class 315 Fans out there, rather than scrapping most of those Class 313's Class 314's including the Class 315's maybe you guys can convert them and including the refurbishment into those Leyland 510 Engine, Volvo B10M Engine, Gardner 6LXCT Engine, Gardner 6LXB, Engine, Gardner 8LXB Engine, Class 313's, Class 314's and the Class 315's and convert all of them into a 2 Carriages and Three Carriages of the Class 313's, Class 314's and that is including those Class 315's for most of us Class 314's and the Class 315's Diesel Train Fans Pretty PLEASE. Are you still going to do this interesting type of Project for all of us out there Please?
The English Electric ones shown used the generator as a motor to start them, later some were modified with starter motors instead of using the generator
This is probably the biggest issue with diesels. In cold weather they seize up and don’t run quite as well. Steam engines can run in cold weather, thanks to their immense heat, and therefore don’t have this issue.
“… until she went on a longish train-ride. I’m not sure she’d speak quite the same way, at least regarding a few antique trains running now and then.” Taking Amtrak to LA and back turned me into something of a train-nut. That said, routine wholesale use of “sooty trains” (and things like them) - not so sure it’s a good idea.
They dont use injectors like you can find in modern diesel (much bigger particles), so Its actually much safer than modern diesel engine. Thats why DPF was invented.
Уродливые в дизайне английские тепловозы!!! Если сравнивать с советскими тех лет, то разница очень большая! Советские 50-60-70-х годов постройки, это щедевр, по сравнению с этим хламом!!!
Love them

Raw power in those licomotives
Do you like these Diesel Locomotives ? :)
I like everything diesel
I miss them.

Good video of these monsters coking to life 🥰😍🤩
the class 37 at 3.30 is just hell fire 🔥🔥🔥 fire coming from the exhaust's 🔥🔥🔥🤩😍🥰
You can't beat a bit of clag ,and I love the class 37...my all time favourite

Also, back in the day, there was no anti freeze coolant...
Very cool video, anything locomotive is fun to watch!
Some lovely grumpy starts from the EEs, 37219 especially!!
Beautiful sounds ❤
That 37 from 2:02 sounds like an old person coughing on their first cigarette of the day.
all good for the clean air act

I have always wondered if they come from the factory new like this.
My question is?? Why aren't they using a engine heater before trying to start it cold engine works better with warm oil in the crank case....
We do but this is always fun
Why is there no ventilation in the sheds?
@@sliderdriver1Gives youngsters the chance to fill their shoes
You can never ever have enough Clag ….It’s the aftershave of real men.
Needs a block heater, would start straight up, no smoking.
You can do that but it takes a while ... Even with 30kW heater
I use a Webasto heater on my truck and it keeps the engine at 170 degrees continuously.
Gretaaaa this is for youuu 😂😂❤️❤️ love these beasts 🥰
😂 scared of a young girl😂 poor beta males hate her😂😂😂😂😂😂
Just love those big diesels
I wouldn’t be watching it otherwise. Great video
'Ol smokey'. Best not Thunberg! 😂
These diesels are best kept running rather than stopping and cold starting.
Magnificent.
😢i thought a old steam train🚂 gave off some smoke but these diesels show how to smoke🚈

Wau... Big engine locomotif troble.....🙏🙏🙏
Do these locos have to pay a ULEZ charge when they go into London?
Don't give the mayor any ideas, if it's got an exhaust he hates it😢
@@andrewlawson5779Hopefully he’ll get voted out tomorrow.
Probably, unlike over 95% of cars.
Why are these engine not preheated? Cold starts are very bad for lifetime reasons. In Germany loco diesel engines are kept warm, therefore good starting with no smoke
The smoke is raw diesel if I remember correctly

White smoke is unburnt diesel and black smoke is burning diesel with insufficient air.

Greta is having a meltdown now 😂
The Doom Goblin is in denial.
They should keep using these and keep building new ones. They are much better than modern ones.
Topping up the O zone 😮

Yeah, a V12 running on five cylinders isn't pretty 🙂
Take this loco to the mot garage and put it on the emissions test would love to see what it would read😊😊
Must have been terrible trying to breathe in those loco sheds.
Nice sounds though but it's bye bye old Diesels.
Of those featured, I have little if any recollection of the Class 20 as they were not common on the Western Region. The others I do.
EE 37, for when God wants a cigarette
If you whish to kill your Diesel Engine you should start it cold. Thats why we warm up to 40° Celsius before starting
No, you dont have to
Greta Thunbergs around the world are bawling “how dare you!” 😂
Just like British cars. They have a mean old age.
What I want to know is how did you get a tank full of compressed air to start it, did it have a mini engine to run the compressor first ?
The English Electric ones shown used the generator as a motor to start them, later some were modified with starter motors instead of using the generator
Get that up ya Greta !
The one starting at 0.50 reminds me of the blocked DPF on my van !
People making comments about warming them up with heaters like they weren't designed in the 1950s
You can easily retrofit them ...

More clag than your average steam loco!
I'm glad to say EMDs don't throw up as much clag as these units do
Take that Sadik Kahn.
Napier Deltec triangle diesel engine.. Check that out.

Why These Engines smoke so much during Starting ?
There is no engine block heating.
Is it me or does the class 37 locomotive at 2:49 sound like it’s shutting off?
Exoos foom fragrance for men
