Ah, the Feuerzangenbowle....I grew up with an aunt from Germany who brought that tradition here. She had a big copper pot that sat on a stand, which she filled with red wine and fruit on the bottom. The literal translation--fire tongs bowl--references the tong that sits on top of the pot and holds that sugar cone. We had huge sugar cones imported from Germany. The rum was poured over it and lit on fire. It took quite some time to melt the whole thing. I've never actually seen it done in miniature like that which you had. That was very cute. I love those memories. We were too young to drink the wine, of course, but we did get some of the fruit. It was yummy but strong. Lol. I've gone so far as to make one of my homemade hand sanitizers a Feuerzangenbowle scent. It's very strong, too. 😋
There is also a german cult movie called "Feuerzangenbowle" from 1944. It's about a teacher who gets dared from his friends to go back to school as a pupil. It's really popular in the big college citys. It's shown end of every year. Students mix their Feuerzangenbowle before hand, then take it with them watching the movie in the bigest lecture hall. Afterwards many bars also serve the drink that night. Quite a special day in college life over here.

hey guys i tell you, if you plan to travel to germany, you can travel to any city over 500k. My hometown Dortmund for example has the biggest christmas tree in the world. In all cities there are beautiful christmas markets and also every smaller city has one. These are sometimes even more charming than the big ones, because most of them still have a medieval town centre. enjoy the christmas time because in this time you should concentrate on the important things in life like love, harmony and community.
@@melchiorvonsternberg844 Hahahaaaaaa! ^^
Best first time going to a German Christmas market video this year. 😊 I really don't have a favorite. It's more like a checklist of stuff I need to get each year. 😁 Bratwurst, Crepes (Nutella & Cherries, Nutella & Amaretto, Yogurette), chocolate covered fruit (strawberries, pineapple), roasted almonds, Kartoffelpuffer (aka Reiberdatschi) with apple sauce, Steakbrötchen with onions, Glühwein, Feuerzangenbowle and Lumumba. There's just so much good stuff.
Greetings from Hannover, the medieval part is my favourite thing! Especially hot mead, I highly recommend to check some of the different flavours out! And cudos for drinking that horn and staying upright, I manage to drink one and get a bit tipsy for around 15 minutes, but I've seen quite a few people not being able to handle such an amount. Problem is not the alcohol, but the sugar from the honey. The alcohol goes straight into your blood and gets you drunk within minutes if you are not used to it, and it's even worse when it's hot. Also Schmalzkuchen is great, since I was a child I am able to find the huts selling it on a christmas market by scent from around 100 metres distance. xD
The best thing in Germany for me is 1) Their delicious hotdogs, especially the curry wurst (yum!!!!) and 2) Their insane amount of different beers. Love it!
Hey, Phil.. Deana was getting pretty LIT with the wine. We have a big Wurstfest here in Texas, but not as cool as there. Was at a Xmas festival in Kempten a while ago, the spiced wine was wonderful. Mid-December, It was super cold I remember, gloves, hat, coat, scarf..most was OK, but my toes were freezing, just had dress shoes on.☃️❄ Thanks, video was great!!
I want to see Phil visit German-themed towns in America. Many have Germanic roots, but some actually renovated the town to make it look more Bavarian for tourism. I'd be interested in seeing him visit some, such as Frankenmuth, Michigan; Leavenworth, Washington; and Hermann, Missouri. They have some Christmas-themed events that reminded me of your video.
I loved visiting all the german Christmas markets last year when I lived in Germany as an exchange student! It really was so much fun and all the food you could get was just awesome. I loved the idea of hot crêpes with Kinder Bueno inside :)
1 more fun fact: Since you paid "Pfand" (deposit) for your mug of Glühwein, you can literally just wander off with it. Like the cup? Keep it... Need a "road Glühwein" zu get you home? Just take it and you'll have a memory in the form of the cup on top of it! - Many Glühwein Stands try to make use of that fun phenomenon by designing nice/memorable cups that entice people to nick them, so they earn more by selling the cups on top of the Glühwein... The heart-shaped cups toward the end of the video are a great example of that!
"All you need is a stick of meat and gluhwein and you'll have a merry Christmas!" Haha! So cute! Love your channel! We've been living in Wien for 16 years now. Love Christmas markets. That one looks amazing though! I love the rösti (I think that's what it's called... fried potatoes with speck and onions) or the baked dough on a rolling pin like thing... can't remember what they're called...Baum something...) or crepes, or Belgian waffles on a stick, or pumpkin soup in a bread bowl or Heiß Maroni! Now I can't wait until Christmas!! Or blueberry Glühwein! Yum!! :) Keep up the great channel!! :)
Glad you tried Glühwein on it's own version first and finished off with the feuerzangenbowle. These are (in my opinion) 2 of the 3 classic Christmas market drinks. The other one would be Kinderpunsch. I always have this first and then get myself a Glühwein with Amaretto and at the end the Feuerzangenbowle
Oh, Hannover, unsere Region, sehr gut! By the way, my favourite christmas market snack is Schmalzkuchen and candied sunflower seeds respectively peanuts.
At around 6:18 you where at the Beerenweine booth. When you buy some of them for at least 20€ you'll get a special coin, a Beerenweintaler. And when you collect 50 of them (in other words boozed up for 1000€ or more) you'll get a Beerenweine Knighthood and a sword.
I come from German heritage on both sides of my family. I eat in German and Bavarian restaurants/markets whenever I can. I have yet to have any Gluhwein but have had other mulled wines. I have made my own mead, mixed it with apple cider, heated in pot and then stir it in the mug with a cinnamon stick. Awesome.

Great video!! How can you see all that and not feel Christmas?! My favorite part, though, was that after two drinks Deana was trashed!! 🤣 Luckily, you found her a meat stick and she kinda mellowed out. It would've been hillarious if all you did was drink. Phil, you would've been carrying her home!! 😋
My favorites at the christmas market are very classic bratwurst and mulled wine (although I'm of the same opinion as Phil and would immediately exchange the mulled wine for beer)! Visit the Christmas market in Erfurt, the atmosphere with the giant cathedral in the background is unbelievable! Of course even better in the twilight!
Dammit, I want to visit such Market too! Drinking mead, throwing axes and eating those "hotdogs". Actually I think I want to live at a German Christmas market.
I was in Germany and Belgium this month and went to the Christmas markets in Koln, Bonn and Dusseldorf in Germany and to the Christmas markets in Bruges, Ghent and Brussels. I just got back a couple of days ago. I love gluhwein and the Krackhauer!!!!!! I also had something new this trip to germany....I think it is called Egg punch? It was good but strong.
I'm sorry, I just gotta tell you that seeing people spell Düsseldorf as Dusseldorf bc they don't have the ü on their keyboard makes me giggle bc "Dussel" is a mild insult comparable to "dummy", which makes Dusseldorf "Dummyville" xD

In all cities there are beautiful christmas markets and also every smaller city has one. These are sometimes even more charming than the big ones, because most of them still have a medieval town centre. enjoy the christmas time because in this time you should concentrate on the important things in life like love, harmony and community.
If you are ever sight seeing in Hannover you should definitly check out the new townhall (especially the elevator to the viewing platform )
Love it!
In the Christmas market in Bochum they sell glühbier. Maybe in other markets too around Germany
I love how the little city looks, the Christmas market is gorgeous. I LOVE mustard!!!!! All kinds, spicy is my favorite.
Hey, Phil.. Deana was getting pretty LIT with the wine. We have a big Wurstfest here in Texas, but not as cool as there. Was at a Xmas festival in Kempten a while ago, the spiced wine was wonderful. Mid-December, It was super cold I remember, gloves, hat, coat, scarf..most was OK, but my toes were freezing, just had dress shoes on.☃️❄
Thanks, video was great!!
The Christmas market looks awesome.
Thanks!
Thanks so much, Michael! 🤗💜
One of your best vlogs, I like that!
Thanks a lot! =)
Musste rüggen bei dem Brovilbild
Lalelu ist des absichtliche Browogazion etzela? Sieh zu das du Land gwinnst aller!
Germany is not Bavaria
@@honkytonk4465 but Bavaria is Germany :O
In the US, you can shoot with guns on a range, but in Germany you can throw an axe at a bear!! xD
u forget u will be drunk at the same time :P
That food looks soooooo goooood🤤
I was on one Christmas market in Singen in Germany, and it was magical 💓
was at the Christmas markets for the first time this year in Bavaria and salzburg-- so magical!! Def an experience
Met in English is called Mead. Also Gluhwein is Mulled Wine.
Love you guys!!! Thanks so much for sharing!!! You two are awesome too watch!!! 👍👍🥃🥃🎄🎄
Awesome.
Germany is not Bavaria.
@@honkytonk4465 ^^
Hot cider, sounds hessian style. That really exist in Germany...
Happy Hollidays to all of you ;)
Happy Holidays!
That meter and a half long hot dog looked heavenly. The potato bacon bread looked yummy too.
The reason your Feuerzangenbowle tasted so strong is because a lot of the rum was "spilled" when soaking the sugar. That's not always the case.
As I live in Hannover, I surely had to give a thumbs up.
Thanks for sharing! This is so awesome! MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Oh my how beautiful and I hope to return to Germany at Christmas time. When I visited Heidelberg my first time to try mulled wine ❤️🤗
You seem to be very impressed by our German annual Christmas madness as it seems to me!
Dammit, I want to visit such Market too! Drinking mead, throwing axes and eating those "hotdogs". Actually I think I want to live at a German Christmas market.
Lol me too
With a bit of camouflage, maybe you can get away with staying in that forest. xD
Maybe you can rent one of the boozes over night 😉😁
Dont we all want that..
Oh yeah Hannover christmas market is bes, because its actually 3 themed Ines That Kind of merged together over time.😍
How dare you, Honig into the Wunschbrunnen Wald without making a wish at the real Hannover wunschbrunnen 😶🌫️😱
Krackhauer??? Sorry, it‘s written Krakauer and means a sausage with origin from the city of Krakau in Poland.
Nice seeing that people from other countries like our culture... im from cologne/Köln and it makes me really happy to see that
I'm sorry, I just gotta tell you that seeing people spell Düsseldorf as Dusseldorf bc they don't have the ü on their keyboard makes me giggle bc "Dussel" is a mild insult comparable to "dummy", which makes Dusseldorf "Dummyville" xD
Wenigstens hast du einen gute Weinachtsmarkt genommen, einer meiner must have jedes Jahr
