I miss Geena Davis on screen! She was the best thing about "The Accidental Tourist." At that time, strangers told me I reminded them of her in that film and that was an awesome compliment. I finally saw the movie, because everyone kept telling me I should. In this clip, Don and Melanie were adorable together and Geena was never classier or more beautiful. She richly deserved this award.
One of strongest years in supporting actress category in all times. All nominess are marvelous in their roles; all are great actresses. Particularly, I'd choose between Davis and Pfeiffer. Davis deserved win.

What a competitive category! Each of the five could easily have won... all were fantastic! Geena Davis winning is just splitting hairs about who was 'best'... all were brilliant.

It's funny because Melanie Griffith would later work with Geena Davis years later in Stuart Little 2. Davis played Mrs. Little and Griffith was the voice of Margalo the bird

One of Hollywood’s most poignant and graceful actresses. Everything she’s done have been works of Art. This was an absolute fucking amazing win!! She played the role Muriel so well, so freaking amazing she’s just phenomenal.

Both Pfeiffer and McDormand were better picks here over Weaver. Weaver is barely acting in Working Girl.
R F Weaver played against type in “Working Girl”. Before that she had always been given the tough girl role. In Working Girl she played a glamorous, seductive, pretentious high-class bitch and she was very convincing.

I remember this telecast! All 5 supporting actresses were outstanding; each one deserved the Oscar that year. It was the first award of the night, and I was on the edge of my seat (I think Don & Melanie deliberately dragged it out to mess with people, and heighten the tension).
Sigourney had been the favorite to win, but she may have split the vote with her co-star Joan Cusak, as well as with herself in the Actress category. Who knows? I'm happy Geena won - it was a pretty good year in film!
Geena Davis is one of the best actresses of 80-90's...but, here, the best is MICHELLE PFEIFFER, no doubt. She deserved the Oscar for her magnificent acting in 'Dangerous Liaisons'. Anyway Geena's work in Accidental Tourist was very good.
I have so much respect for Michelle Pfeiffer. I think it's because she was so beautiful and she didn't let that carry her . . . she really is a wonderful actress. I don't think she had plastic surgery either which is why she's able to get parts for older women whereas Melanie Griffith and Meg Ryan will probably not get any work because they had work done and look so unnatural now.
both Michelle and Glenn Close were DEEPLY deserving of Oscars for their performances in that movie.

I was rooting for Sigourney Weaver and Michelle Pfeiffer but Geena Davis was fantastic too. I think her most underrated films are Hero (1992), Cutthroat Island (1995) and especially The Long KIss Goodnight (1996)
Hero is the most underrated comedy of the 90s.
The Long Kiss Goodnight is quirky but really enjoyable!

Gosh, Melanie and Don were so lovely together. He brought up Anne Boleyn…a woman I admire and who was totally innocent of all the charges made against her.
Of course Geena was great in the film and she deserved the Oscar.

The star of her movie was Melanie Griffith. It was all about the "working girl". I watched it a long time ago and I don't remember Sigourney had a really juicy role in it to make her stand out that much. She was just the bitch boss. I also dont think that role was unforgettable. That movie is largely forgotten now.
Geena or Michelle had better parts in that sense and more room to show off.
I think she was surprised she didn't win because I think it was the first time someone was nominated twice and went home empty handed (she was nominated for best actress and best supporting actress that evening). She was nominated for Working Girl (supporting) and Gorilla in the Mist (best actress).
She was brilliant in Thelma & Louise, absolutely on par with Susan Sarandon.
One has to remember that in 1989 those 2 were pretty much at the peak of their careers but those of those caeers are long over now!
Geena Davis should had got a Best Actress nomination for The Fly.
Both supporting categories that year were top-quality, competitive and unpredictable right until the very end. Geena Davis and Kevin Klines ended up as the surprise-ish winners, since there was no clear front-runner in either category.

Are you guys kidding? Foster in The Accused and Close in Dangerous Liaisons were both better in my opinion. In the academies opinion as well as Close got the 2nd most votes this year. Weaver is great in GitM but against Foster and Close? Maybe a bit out of her depth.
One of hardest year for Supporting actress. McDormand very well. But Cusack, Weaver, Pfeiffer and Davis are brilliant!!!!!!!!!!

I think Academy voters divided their votes for Sigourney and she didn't win for this reason. But I think Michelle Pfeiffer deserves more yo win than Geena or Sigourney.
Vice versa Justin. Gorillas was overwrought. When she literally ran with cast on her leg while Tess was taking over her life and her man, i thought yes she deserved the Oscar! The first thing Wick (Gladiator) and Nichols (The Graduate) thought was Sigourney weaver. Her most famous performance out of a lifetime of famous performances. The academy was so wrong like Anjelica Huston and Jason Robards in Julia it's pathetic. Just think Davis wouldn't have made those horrible decisions (earth girls? Cutthroat Island anyone?) If she wouldn't have won!

I'm a big fan of Siqourney Weaver's, but she's from the Hollywood nobility. Her father was famous as was her uncle. So, it's been easier for her to attain status. Geena Davis deserved it more..

Sigourney was not Hollywood royalty. Her father was the head of NBC which cut no ice with the movie-making branch of Hollywood. She lost tons of roles because of her 6 foot height but she fought on. She was one of the earliest women to become a massive box office draw (without a male co-star), and she did this entirely on her own.
Sigourney should have won for "Gorillas In The Mist" (same year). That performance was a tour de force by any standards. She was robbed in the Best Actress not Supporting actress category.
I met Sigourney 2 years ago and told her that she should have won the Oscar for this role. She just smiled and thanked me !
