- In this seminar, Alexander Rondos will address the challenges facing the region and the Horn’s strategic importance Europe, the Gulf states and other actors. A key question is how these challenges can be converted into a joint effort that will allow for the integration of the Horn of Africa into a platform of security and economic cooperation?
The diversity of geography, history, population, politics, and culture has made the Horn of Africa prone to conflict within its societies and between its countries. And it is those differences that have allowed outsiders to play proxy politics with the region.
The core of this region, comprising the countries of Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, and Somalia-with Kenya and Uganda very closely associated-has attracted once again in its history the attention of greater powers.
Several issues are affecting the Horn of Africa today: Terrorism, realignment of loyalties because of confrontation with the Muslim world, the security of trade through the Red Sea and the global migration crisis, to mention some. In geopolitical terms, the Horn is the fragile neighborhood of Europe’s very fractured southern neighborhood.

Man, what about the importance of our natural resources to us?. Our youth, women, elders and almost our whole community is suffering. We can benefit from our own country's priceless natural resource. Somalia will always be Somalia. Wealth is not what you have after all but wealth is who you are. Somalia is my beloved country which is The land of Freedom, wealth, apportunities and an ancient priceless history. God bless Africa and the rest of our planet....Asalam calaykum.

Wow! Without the knowledge of this lecture ever existed , I have just commented not to long ago exactly what this gentleman is talking about. Specially Somalia.There are Somali Nation, Amhara Nation, Oromo Nation, Tigray Nation, Tigranya Nation and many others in these region. We all know where one nation's border end and other begins for thousands of years. With all respect Sir, we don't need the creation of another artificial nation call United East Africa which wouldn't serve the interest of our people but the interest of foreign agenda.One such creation has already gave us enough problem.
How do you know United East Africa will not serve the interest of the people?
As a Somali I like the sound of "United East AfriKa" at the end of the day all Horn of Afrika are Cushit meaning the same people their share same culture. Everybody controls their own borders and increase the power of Horn Afrika and security, military and Economic gross. If we as a East Afrika come together honestly and work out our problems as a unity you can already see the vision of the Horn.
@@barawaupdate With the coming generation UEA is all but guaranteed. I'm 50 with decades long friends from Somalia, Kenya, Amhara, Tigray, Eritrea, Harar and Oromia. FWIW we may argue on methods but are in 100% agreement on UEA concept.
United we are strong divided we will disappear with the wind. Think about one sing arrow easily breakable but when ten arrows comes together stable not easily breakable. What we need is an institution that serves every nation equally without marginalizing some and accordingly dispersing the wealth equally. When we are divided it is easy for the opportunists to widen our differences. United doesn’t mean losing your Somali identity or Eritrean identity it is integrating nations economically.

As a minority Somali-American I would love to state that you do not speak for the majority of us.. Don’t look at the subject , look at the principle in this situation. We all want a Greater Somalia who not just intercedes and trades with our neighbors but also provides jobs in the region (did you forget we have the longest coastal line). With that being said we have to think Pan-African in order to move forward for the generations to come. I’ve been to Somaliland and there is a war for information in the city of Hargeisa, the local government in the Waqooyi state not just controls everything that the citizens of watch or listen to on the internet but they’ve ruined the future of the youth by not providing them with jobs they can support themselves and their families with. This pushes the majority in the country (the youth) to be divided into two groups , the ones migrating through the Sahara dying to get to Europe, and the ones still in their homeland that follow the steps of their forefathers who do nothing but chew Khat and lose hope in life and wait for a member of the diaspora to support them. I say open up the private sector, and have businesses invest in the youth , provide the youth with the finer things in life ( in the third world , that’s anything we take for granted here in the first world) and only then will money circulate in the communities and make the citizens happier. Give the people HOPE!!

A hygiene governance and concrete economic and security cooperation among African nations, are the only ways that could and can save Africa. Historical romanticism of the 1960s is not enough! We have Nilotic people who are native to Sudan, s.sudan, Kenya as well; we got Tigre who is also native to Eritrea, we got afar who are also native to Djibouti; we got Oromos who are native to Kenya... This is true for almost all countries in Africa (including Somalia obviously). so, don't be ignorant. ethnicity doesn't define a country. also what about Somaliland that is more prosperous and stable than Somalia which is an autonomous state on its own yet they are all Somalis.

I am addressing the two respected guests. Please as a professional guest and having served in top government position treat the conflict that is taking place in Ethiopia honestly and frankly.
As every body knows the war started after TPL officials which are administering Tigray Regional Government attacked the 31st Northern Army Brigade at mid night by killing solders and looting ammunition. Afterwards the central government army interred Tgray Region to maintain security and arrest the Juntas in charge of the massacre.
Now the Western and American Governments are supporting the Junta by imposing economic embargo on Ethiopia and also forcing our Government to negotiate with the junta who destroyed hospitals, schools, factories, hotels, farms, homes, shops, telecommunications and electricity facilities, killed cattle and ships. Also elderly and yiung women were raped. When such destruction happened you kept quite which implies you are supporting the action taken by the Junta. So you seem to be indirectly supporting such action.
