This is a Bob Dylan song that Jimi, who was a big Dylan fan, covered. After hearing Hendrix's version, Dylan rearranged the way he sang it live. Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush were a Montreal band who covered a lot of Hendrix material live.
@@gramps6334 Hendrix rearranged the original Dylan version from the 1967 album John Wesley Harding. Marino covered the Hendrix version, duplicating Jimi's solos note for note, except for the slide part, which they said Hendrix played with a Zippo lighter.
The greatest arena rock guitarist of all time. Period. His live albums are the absolute pinnacle of live, guitar-god, in yer face, rock guitar ever recorded.
I've been listening to Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush since the Live 1978 came out. Wore than one out listening to it and to this day it's still one of my favorite albums. He is really great live. He did many live albums. I highly recommend live recordings of The Answer, Dragonfly, or Poppy and many more. A great video collection with all these songs is Live at the Agora Theatre.
Frank is my favorite guitar player and Mahogany Rush is my favorite band. There is a live version of this on TH-cam from 1979. This one shows how good and the band really are. They are killer luve.
Frank Marino was the last band to play at Cal jam two after Aerosmith in 1978 Ontario California 300,000 people. Everybody was leaving heading towards one tunnel that went underneath the racetrack with Frank Marino playing in the background spotlights going through the air. people passed out garbage everywhere. It was like walking through a battlefield after the fight, I was 16 years old
Thank you Airplay Beats! You've just been introduced to one of the better guitarists/songwriters to come out of the late 60s, early 70s. Absolutely love this version of All Along The Watchtower. Jimi was defintely one of his major influences, having covered many of his tunes and stylings. He has a fine repertoire of blues/rock/psychedelic /jazz/fusion, though mostly a strong hard-driving rock/blues texture with soaring guitar riffs. He's one of my favorites!
we went to a concert at winter wonderland in SF... opening was ruby star and the gray ghost ( black oak arkansas ) followed by frank marino and mahogany rush ( best bass solo ) backing up for black sabbath ... backing up for blue oyster cult ! a night i will never forget.
I was just thinking of Frank and Mahogany Rush; I’m so glad you finally picked them up. As you recognized, he’s one of the great guitarists that few knew about, but other great guitarists respected him. I look forward to your exploration of his catalog.
After a bad trip Frank Marino went to the hospital where he learnt to play the guitar (before he was a drummer) . He declared (as a joke) he was visited by the spirit of Jimi Hendrix and was his reincarnation .The journalist took this tale dead serious and maybe it help him to gain a name
Thanks for getting to Frank. Runnin' Wild, Go Strange, Ain't Dead Yet, Ditch Queen & Juggernaut from his solo albums are killer songs with awesome guitar playing by Frank. 🎸
All along the Watch Tower is is a Bob Dylan song. Jimmy took the song to another level. Frank Marino is a monster guitarist and you are correct, the song is a great tribute to Hendrix. Check out "It's Begun to Rain or Somethings Comin our Way" live at the Agora.
I saw him LIVE also in Huntington Beach at a small venue, but it was lackluster, I was unfortunately disappointed, but at California Jam his show was the SHIT. While he was playing an airplane was flying low over the stage, and made several passes, he took his guitar and turned it into a weapon, and shot the airplane down with full on amazing sound effects, it was the MOST unbelievable performance ever!
My first time in Vegas, years ago, we passed by a casino and their sign had "Performing Live Frank Marino"! I got so excited, told my buddy we got to go, told me it wasn't who I was thinking of, it wasn't THAT Frank Marino. It was a Drag Show and a different Frank Marino. We didn't go, but still chuckle about the look on my face had I not known and gone to the show. 🤣
Frank Marino and Gary Moore are 2 of the greatest under-rated guitar heroes. Frank's song--Stories of a Hero is a classic monster rock song. His song Dragonfly is also a beast of a song. You will not be disappointed.
Frank Marino was forced to retire because of shoulder pain. His DVD Live At The Agora Theater is a masterpiece. There are so many good songs to choose from. There are very few players that could play anything and Frank is at the top of the list. All of the greats know Frank"s work and have nothing but praise for his skill level.
It's actually a Bob Dylan song...that Jimi did. Frank Marino (Mahogany Rush) were one of the bands at my first concert; Cal Jam 2 - 1978...I was 15yrs9mos. Was a long time ago but doesn't seem so long ago.
@@Rock_Snob That was a good one for a first. My older brother went to get something to drink for us before Santana played, because as you know they took everything from us at the gate, and he never returned. So I was by myself until Aerosmith was done. Then I went to the east end, to the tunnel under the track, and stuck out my thumb and shouted "anyone going to Berdoo?" I said that twice and someone responded "come with us." It turned out they lived just a few blocks around the corner from me. Oh, and my older bro had an asthma attack and was sent to the hospital...after spending most of the day in the medical tent. What a day.
The entire Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush Live album is phenomenal. In the late 70's, they opened for Aerosmith at the Omni in Atlanta. I went to see them then left halfway thru Aerosmith's first song.
Those who know (Frank) know. 👈 The best to ever conjure up the complete Hendrix “Experience.” And yes I’ve seen and love, Stevie Ray, Gary Moore, Eric Johnson et al. Guys, do the title track from this album. Frank burns down the second half of the song switching between Rock and Jazz solos. Checkout his live performances, they’re all perfection. Glad you finally got here. Btw, his 78 Live album (Black Cover) is a must. Was there when some of it was recorded. Enjoyed your reactions. 🤘
I am so glad you got to him, finally. I been one of the many fans wanting you guys to get this done. Now do his original work though. This was a great first choice, nice reaction fellas.

Saw Mahogany Rush a few times in the 70s. They were always great. I bought Child of the Novelty when it was their new album. Nice to give the band some love.
I have seen Frank 4 times. 3 times in the 1970's and once in the early 2000's. He has some great originals but has done a lot of covers. Hendrix disciple. Song written by Bob Dylan. He always puts on a great show but was epic in small venues in the 1970's!
I always considered myself a pretty well informed person in regard to music and great guitar players but on this one I was clueless.. one of your fans mentioned Mahogany Rush , in familiar with the name but was in the dark about Frank Marino! Man this guy was tremendous!! It takes balls of caste iron to cover a Jimi Hendrix song , even though Dylan wrote it, Jimi made it his own from day one!! This was great, thanks for turning me on to a new musician to add to the list of “must check this dude out in depth” . Love your channel bros!! I’m ready for your next reaction!! Why not follow up with Jimi version of All Along the Watchtower?? I’m sure no one will bitch about that!! If they do, f*** em! It’s well worth doing a side by side comparison!!!

"All Along the Watchtower" is a song by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan from his eighth studio album, John Wesley Harding (1967). The song was written by Dylan and produced by Bob Johnston. The song's lyrics, which in its original version contain twelve lines, feature a conversation between a joker and a thief. The song has been subject to various interpretations; some reviewers have noted that it echoes lines in the Book of Isaiah, Chapter 21, verses 5-9. Dylan has released several different live performances, and versions of the song are included on some of his subsequent greatest hits compilations.
It was written and recorded by Dylan. Have not heard a bad version of it yet. Jimi's by far is my favorite! Frank's version is a close 2nd. The weekend keeps getting better! Excellent reaction, fellas. ❤😊👏
