    Awesome job on the pond you guys! We have one that's covers over 1 1/2 acres. Built back in the early 1930's. Our farm was a cattle farm for many many years. The pond was used to fill several big round concrete watering troughs scattered around the vicinity. The troughs are still operational but we don't have cattle. My wife's uncle who was in his 70's told me that he used to fish in it back when he was a young boy.
    I have always loved to fish and the pond was a big priority for me. I bought bluegills, red ears, and catfish to stock it up with before we even started on building our house. We have been here 17 years now and I am about to turn 62. I still enjoy it as much as ever. It's a lot of work keeping it cleaned off around it but I don't mind. You just have to stay on top of it or it will quickly grow up around it. I hope you and Miss Wanda enjoy yours as much as we do. Take care and keep us all updated. Love your channel!

    • @alabamathrifter365
      @alabamathrifter365 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paul Reid Yes our pond is still pretty grown up around on two sides now. I have been trying to keep one side and the dam cleaned off. In fact I just mow that area when I mow a border around our pastures. When it gets cold and the snakes are gone I plan in trying to get it cleaned up all the way around. We also had a problem with beavers for awhile. They would dam up the overflow and I would have to keep tearing it down. But man they would have it all dammed up again sometimes the next day. During a dry spell last year the water receded about 4 feet from the bank, leaving their huge hutch out of the water. It all caved in and we stopped seeing them. Keeping my fingers crossed on that one, lol

Be nice if you could build a bank covered in sand on the side with the dock so kids can swim! The grass and trees look like a park on that other side. So exciting building a pond! Fun

    Wanda and Danny as someone who is much older and also someone who has fished all his life you need to leave some of the trees as structure for them to hide in. Are you putting in bluegill and bass only? You are going to put in catfish you will need some type of shiners as catfish will eat all of your bream.

    I wonder if you pour some lime in the main water stream along entrance to the pond so it’s mixed in the water going and on the angles to get a whirl effect that might have a little current to help mix it so you don’t throw your back out swinging the shovel on muddy areas. Sorry just made me nervous. After I found out you guys are injured or well worn for hard work. Sorry I’m not trying to be a hoverer I just thought I’d give an idea as a friend.

    That opening shot of the overhead view of the pond truly gives a person an idea of the size of it. Danny are you sure you just didn't want to go fishing when you did the depth test?? As hard as it is you are doing the right thing by waiting to put fish in. The saddest thing would be to come out one morning and see the fish dead near the shore of the pond.

  • @chris3m98

      John Liberty I’m sure there will naturally be crawfish in his pond we have them all over the place In south Mississippi! But it wouldn’t be a bad idea to go to the coast and get a 35 pound sack of crawfish for the pond once’s a year and dump some rock piles in different places around the pond for them to find and stay alive in and breed because huge bluegill, bass and catfish love the crawfish

    🤔 to help keep the soil from keeping the water murky and lowering the ph you say want to put grass and clover seed around the lake. That will attract insects that bluegill like to eat.
    Put some limestone boulders and riprap in and around the lake and they hold fish by creating territories and breeding areas as well as slowly raise the Ph by acting as a buffer.
    I hope this is of some help. Good luck with your homestead , lake and channel.
