    1. A system with High Sierra installed has pulled down firmware for the machine when the installer runs, and it's supposed to lock out previous OS versions running. So the Sierra install not booting is about what I expected.
    2. You're getting permissions errors under single user mode as root, because the system libraries are under Apple's SIP protection. So it won't let you do much.

  • @Poire33
    @Poire33 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    5:15 Isn't the recovery partition sometimes hidden? Wouldn't you have had to press Cmd + R with the internal boot drive selected? Also, when you did press Cmd + R a few seconds later, the Apple logo appearing means that either it didn't detect the key press or local recovery is loading. If internet recovery had been loading, a spinning globe would have appeared. Am I right, Ken?

    Good video, perhaps I missed it but I would've tried to boot in verbose mode so you could try to capture what was happening when it went to the white screen without the loading bar and hung there. I recently had this issue with a much newer iMac and it turned out it was trying to find wifi constantly (obviously not the issue with this laptop) but had I not used verbose boot I would've never known where to look first.
    Also perhaps it's an issue with that specific SKU + High Sierra combo? Try rolling back the OS or do as others have suggested and try booting an alternative operating system to see if they reciprocate the gpu hardware issue.
    Anyways, good luck! Your videos always make me laugh :)

    It looks like there is a problem with the GPU firmware that is preventing it from changing into 3D mode to display OS animations and effects, that's why removing the drivers worked because without the drivers it won't try to change into 3d mode. You might be able to repair this by flashing the GPU rom.

  • @DakalaShade

    Having experienced GPU failure on a Windows machine several times, yeah, that screams GPU failure. The behavior in Windows is that everything works just fine until the GPU drivers load properly, then all manner of chaos happens, the GPU driver crashes, and the computer typically BSOD's.
    Not really trying to Apple-Bash here, but I just find it amusingly typical that Apple obscures the reason the system crashes, while Microsoft gives you a BSOD with an error code to look up. (A hint for Windows users: If your rig's crashing with a 0x116, it's either the GPU or the GPU drivers.)
    First thought I had, though, was bad RAM. I've had laptops not boot because of RAM before, and they'll get surprisingly far (had a couple actually get to Windows before crashing) on occasion. Any time I see a laptop, I suspect memory, because laptops move a lot, and all it takes is a memory module getting wiggled out of the socket just ever so slightly, and you're in for a world of trouble.

      Windows error codes arent as accurate anymore on BSOD cause for some reason they stopped doing hexadecimal error codes and instead using strings which mean multiple things

    • @DakalaShade
      @DakalaShade 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@_danu Oh, that's just stupid. At least the hexadecimal codes could be Googled and a solution could be found. Microsoft needs to understand that they are not Apple, and Windows will never be OS X, so they should quit trying to appeal to the Apple fans because all that does is make it _easier_ for their normal customers to switch to the Apple products.

    MacBooks have GPU issues like crazy. I remember on my mothers 2013 MacBook Air the GPU was so goofed it would occasionally just crash the computer at random intervals. I found though that if I just used mini-display port into an external display it would work completely fine even if the computer kept crashing it wouldn’t crash on the external display

      What do you mean by "crashing"? Because that sounds more like a bad display.

    They only started the repair program for the 2011 MBP solder flaws in 2015, you were only applicable three years from the date of purchase, and ended in 2017. Miss any of those windows and you were boned. Nice, huh. Richest company out there isn't beyond bill dodges, and maybe that just makes sense.

    Computer Clan, if you try to boot Mac OS High Sierra off a extr hard drive, you got to take out the inter hard drive because Apple had put a special code where a user cannot have 2 OS on a Mac

      That’s not true. I’ve done it many times. I found the reason why it want working, but I don’t want to spoil it.

    IIRC if you boot into single user mode, your drive is read only by default. You have to manually remount it read/write.

    Guess what!
    It's a HARDWARE ISSUE!
    Almost always from OVERHEATING the GPU's hot air soldering!
    NOT a software issue
    Not anything on ANY HDD
    Internal or external

    Old now I know lol. New for me watching I would of liked another option. Ask the user to Reflow the gpu using hot air. Not loosing if it's broken bonus, cheap fix if it works.
