Gosh looking at him, he seems a bit underweight and has no topline development for as much as they say they are working him. That vet is awesome! I would trust him to check any horse I would consider. I know Ernie seemed so nice and he is but not for what Lily needed him for.
Just from watching this video he did not at all look healthy and hearty! Lily your parents exactly did the right thing!! I know it is a disappointment but sweetheart the horse of your lifetime in in your future!!! Praying from a lifetime horse lady!
Don't worry Lily, your next best horse is out there, and you will find it. It's good that you got a good vet to check Ernie. He will get a good home but something less athletic than you need. Love your channel, reminds me of my own days with horses. Have fun!
Awww. As the doctor made his final announcement, and I watched you crawl deeply into your jacket, even pulling your neck in (kinda like a turtle) my heart cracked a little for you. I know how it is to want something so badly that we literally dream of it! You know what I tell myself when that happens? (And it still does, from time to time, even though I'm older). I tell myself that I DON'T want a house that I'll have to sell. Again. And I encourage myself with this idea: if a horse as great as Ernie isn't the best horse for me, I can't even IMAGINE how fabulous the right horse will be. Hugs for you, Lily.
that guy is a great vet! lily, i know its hard looking at new horses to buy.. i want to buy them all, but in reality, i know i can't. ernie is a great horse, i'm sure.. but he is not the horse you NEED to do what you want! i'm sorry you were so sad, too. i've wanted to rescue horses but not in the position to do that, yet.. one day i will.. and one day soon, you'll find your next horse, i promise!
So sorry that he didn't pass the exam. But you did the right thing for Lily. Y'all will find her the mount she needs to progress in her chosen field of hunters and jumpers
Lily, I’m so sorry Ernie didn’t work out for you. You guys were very smart to have an excellent equine vet check him out. Keep looking sweet girl, your dream horse is out there.
Spinal problems are not easy to comfort when the horse you love so much hurts. After riding day after day which every girl wants it would only get to be more uncomfortable for Ernie to the point after more time living with it, he could even get grumpy and not even wanting to be touched. Physical therapy for horses can get quite expensive as the kissing spine gets even worse as they age. Lily you will want a horse you can get on when you want to ride, not when your horse wants you to ride. I pray that God sends your buddy jumper right into your heart very very soon.
I am so sorry, Lily. That is a lot of disappointment to deal with. You are doing a good job at shopping for the right fit. Be gentle with your sweet heart. You will fall in love with every animal you meet, and that is not a bad thing.
Unfortunately you don't have enough experience yet to know what he was looking at but I could tell when you brought him out of the stall that he most likely had some back issues. He also had a lack of muscle tone in the neck and along his back. This usually happens with back issues. I rode hunter/jumpers and 3 day eventing for over 10 years. I had a thoroughbred who developed a back issue, but back then there wasn't all the therapies available to help. She still loved to jump but it was hard to get any kind of consistency in flat work and dressage. We retired her early to become a broodmare. I'm sorry Lilly. Your parents made the right decision. It's hard finding the right horse. Now a days you need to do exactly what they did by getting a very good vet hospital to do that kind of pre-purchase exam. I don't know if you had an experienced trainer, with at least 15 years experience showing and training, come with you when you looked at Ernie. This is really critical nowadays because there is a lot of bad horses for sale. A very good trainer could pick up the slight bit of lameness and the sore back he had before your parents had the purchase exam. It also helps with the broken heart you are facing now. I know what that feels like because it happened to me with my first horse when I was 10.
I agree with you 100%. It is hard to see with the long coat, but he looks to be skinny, very poorly muscled in the neck and hind. The coat also looks dull. Most important is that this horse that seems to be really sweet kicked out as soon as he went to the end of his back and while lifting the hind legs. Poor thing must be in a lot of pain.
I am so sorry Ernie didn't work out. I have been in the horse industry all my life and sometimes it is just how it goes. Even though it can be very frustrating, the right one is out there, don't give up. I am so glad you guys went to Tryon and got a great exam. ( I have actually worked with that vet. He is awesome!!! ) I was so happy to see him on your video!!! I was 9 when I got my first horse, he was 3 off the race track. I had had "some" lessons but we were pretty new starting out just like you are. My brother-in-law gave me that horse and he will forever be part of me. Good luck Lily !! I am rooting for you !!!
LILLY!!! my heart hurts for you!!! I really wish you could have gotten him cuz I saw how happy he made you when you rode but just imagine a horse that is able to be there AND grow with you too!!! You will find your baby I promise!! I can’t wait to see your journey continue. You definitely have a viewer in me!!
So sorry Lilly 😢 you will find the perfect horse for your wants and needs. It was wonderful you had Ernie checked. You wouldn't want to see him in pain either from the workouts
I know this was very disappointing but the right horse is out there waiting for you. All these experiences are good because you are learning so much and through them you will be able identify the right horse.
You did the smart thing by having a prepurchase vet check. I alway told my lesson kids and their parents it can save you so much heartache in the end. You also know you are not going to be asking him to perform and do things that will only make his condition worse. The right horse is out there. In the meantime, have you considered leasing a horse that you may be able to show?
Oh bless you all, my heart sank as much as Lilly’s when the kissing spine was mentioned, he seemed like such a sweet horse but totally right decision sadly 😢 xx
So sorry Ernie didn’t work out for you but your dream will come along! He would have been a hard keeper on grass hay and pasture. Also with your Dad not wanting you to blanket a horse that’s something else to keep in mind when picking a horse. Thoroughbreds are more thin skinned and have a harder time in cold wet weather than other horses when not blanketed or don’t have some kind of shelter.
get experience and unfortunately - many OTTB's have spinal issues. poor guy, done his job all his life - he just needs to be allowed to be a horse. There are so many out there you will find the right one, it just takes time.
Too bad Lilly 😢I know you were excited 😊 but this is a good eye opener to take your time on finding the right horse for you and what you have future plans for 😊❤
I'm so glad you went to a vet that explained things and gave you a good run down, Keep chin up and always try more then one horse when looking at one to buy good luck on your search I do hope that horse gets proper care from current owner to help him.
Lily, I am so sorry to hear this. You made the correct decision in not going ahead with the purchase. He would have become worse, been in a lot of pain, and would have started bucking. You will find the right horse for you.
Kissing spine is not uncommon in Thoroughbreds unfortunately. A standard bred might be better for you. I love them, calm, can do anything including jumping, hardy and live quite a long time. I had one still being ridden at 34. She ended up with cancer and had a 2 year retirement before, at 36 it was time to say goodbye. Appaloosas can be good horses for jumping and eventing too. I had a 40 year old who could still be ridden but only had one eye and his other eye was failing. Tbs are generally not so tough and require more care like shoes, special diets, more regular dental and more prone to issues like kissing spine, navicular disease, ulcers and more. You can sometimes get good ones but they aren’t common.
Hey Lily I'm so sorry it didn't work out. Ik how you feel. This has happened to me many times and it hurts but remember that God's paving the way for an even more special horse/pony❤
#theLilyRhodesShow, Lily, I am very sorry. I know this was hard on you. I saw your Papa video, but watching yours to give you income earned. I think you need to make more videos to earn a lot. The kind of horse you need to move foreward in your journey will cost a lot more than what Ernie would have cost. I had tears with you.
Is Lilly looking for a thoroughbred in particular? I don’t understand why she would, because I think they’re too delicate. We only had one, so that’s the only experience I have. I was wondering why she wasn’t going for a saddlebred when she’s wanting to do all the different types of competition riding ect.
Lilly, patience will help find the perfect horse for you. With eventing you really need a super sound horse. Patience now will help you in your riding experience overall.
There are several things you can check before you have a vet come out. Feel the legs for bumps and hot spots. See if you can lift all the legs without problems. It is a good indicator for back problems like you see here and also because you don't want to risk a child to get kicked. You can put some pressure with your fingers on both sides of the spine and feel your way to the back like the vet does. You don't want to get an extreme response. This kicking out is a horse that is already screaming at you, most just pull back at specific spots. Have the horse stand straight and look from the back if the hips are at the same height left and right and the spine looks pretty straight. See if you can bring an experienced horse person to the first visit to a horse you are interested in to buy. This prevents already getting attached to a horse that is not going to pass the vet check for sure. I am glad you chose to have an excellent vet check him out, it saved you all a lot of money and even more heartache in the future.
I owned quite a few horses as a child and as an adult. As you well know buying a horse is a financial and an emotional investment. I am so glad you decided to spend the money for the evaluation and extras. Lily may feel broken heartened, but she hopefully learned very valuable lessons on what to look for when purchasing a horse. What really got my attention was the owner only had him for a few months, and the previous owner only had him for about 6 months. At that point, i watched him trot back and forth in the barn and could see he was in some pain. The outside lunge confirmed it. He was in pain, which prevented him from performing lope.or canter. I'm sure Lily is sad about not getting him, and it will take some time to get over that sadness. 😔
Ernie will find someone now who will know the truth but be ok with what he's doing now or lower level job He will be ok and people will have more information because it's tied to his chip Much love xoxox thanks
Lily, dear girl, just know there is a perfect horse out there dreaming of the little blonde girl that will be their forever friend and God will see your paths meet. This was but a step further down that road.
There is a wonderful rescue in Virginia i bet they could match Lilly with her next horse. They are well vetted and know their horses. Contact colbys crew rescue in Charlottesville VA they will do a wonderful job matching her to a perfect horse.
Aww :(( Lily.. If i was you i would give up Ernie and look for different horse instead of wasting my money on paying vet bills, treatment bills, etc for sick Ernie
Or you can just bring Peaches back if you want bigger horse because i've heard you changed your mind from not fitting with big horse to now fitting with big horse
I would be saying sorry but NO that is talking a lot of money now. Ya Lilly id willing to work for it BUT I will be to much money for you to save up to pay. I would think.
more like a "vet tutorial" instead of a vet check People should leave vets alone to concentrate on the task at hand. Glad the kid stopped petting the horse while the vet wants to look at its teeth.

Yes it makes a refreshing change

I'm sorry for your disappointment, Lily, but it will be worth it when you find the right one.

Poor Lily, am sure theres a horse out there waiting for you!
Try Horse Plus
The last thing Lilly needs is a horse with back problems I could tell by his condition he was not right
I think you need a horse smart person to help you pick the horses to look at, and look at several horses before deciding...
sorry baby girl😪
more like a "vet tutorial" instead of a vet check People should leave vets alone to concentrate on the task at hand. Glad the kid stopped petting the horse while the vet wants to look at its teeth.

probably on lily's channel.
@AB-ol5uz this is her vlog... the lily Rhodes show. Maybe I saw it on her dad's vlog earlier... Meh oh well.
I would not even bother with a horse that under weight, horrible convermation.not a good prospect.i think you need to look at some more money to spend to buy something better.
Parents please check her spelling is bad.show is cute I enjoy it
It’s “moye” likely a typing error than bad spelling. It happens.
