- Two Iowa brothers, Drew and Aaron Howing, jumped into action over the weekend as devastating flooding left Spencer, IA, residents stranded and needing rescue. The brothers used their boat to rescue over 30 residents from their homes and even someone stuck inside their car. Drew and Aaron join FOX Weather to tell their story. #iowa #foxweather

Drew and Aaron are what we in the South lovingly call "good old boys." They just quietly show up in an emergency to rescue people caught in floods, ice, snow, you name it. Then go home. The Best of Americans. I've been rescued twice over the years by guys like this. God, please don't break this mold.

I live in Western Iowa. This is our 3rd flood in 13 years.
Prayers for all that is hit by these devasting floods. So many people have been affected and displaced and have lost homes. Thank you for being heros.

I lived through the 1993 floods. No, they weren't as bad as this one is in NW Iowa, but if you were in eastern Iowa Waterloo/Cedar Rapids/Dubuque area, the 1993 flood looked like these images for hundreds of miles. It's historic and people remember it for a reason. Welcome to the Mississippi River flood plain. These guys here are a bit upriver, so it's not quite the same this year. This area in NW IA doesn't regularly get hit like further east. This may also explain why were hearing so many people say they don't have flood insurance. This area may not be in a formal flood plain (I don't know?), so it may not be required as it is in other parts of the country. I don't know if we want to call these guys the Farmer's Navy, but they absolutely did a job today. Legit heroes.
I remember watching that on TV and being absolutely horrified. The water just went on, and on, and on ...
I live on the northwest side of the town and we are bone dry but my best friends house is underwater.

Thank you so much for helping my community. I live far enough on the backside of town that I wasn't affected by the flooding, but I am currently having sewage come up in the basement. Sewer and water are still not back up and running, so possibly more sewage in my basement for the days to come until those are up and running again.
Give them 2 brothers , for the greatness they are back bone of the true free country we used to have

It was estimated over 2 feet over the record from 1953. It was estimated because the gauge was completely submerged. This is much worse than 1993. Thanks again.

Wow! I traveled through this town once on the way to MN. All this water is so devastating, hopefully no fatalities. Things/items are replaceable not lives.
Only one fatality. A man visiting from out of state decided to drive across one of the bridges with water on it and got swept away.

Spencer's local government immediately responded. The first rescue was made around 5:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.
Most of the surrounding towns were dealing with their own flooding, but these communities care about each other. The county just north of them has set up a secure donation location at the okoboji public school.
3 Spencer churches were established as shelters, portable toilets were brought in, and the RTA for northwest Iowa, whose office is located in Spencer and was without phone or internet, is still providing rides for those in need of medical appointments, as well as getting people to places where they can take a shower tomorrow. They are resuming limited Rides services tomorrow, and plan to be operating as usual as early as Wednesday.
The governor surveyed the area via helicopter and declared a state of emergency for roughly 9 counties, followed by getting a national disaster for 21 counties the following day.
The Red Cross was assisting within a day of the flooding. Fema arrived on Monday, I think. I don't remember reading anything about the national guard or any other USA military being there.

Wow, I'm glad everyone was safe! I hope everyone quits praying for rain all at once because these 1000 yr events are happening all at once all over the world now. I'm glad it's not due to climate change or atmospheric rivers or oil companies not making enough profits.
I would’ve never thought this would happen. The river does go up when it rains, but never like this. I was lucky to live out of town in the country. My family wasn’t so lucky. They have to replace so much. It was definitely stressful for everyone. What made it worse was that there were people riding around in kayaks breaking into homes.
That's sickening. You go to hell for that, using people's misfortunes to further destroy them.

The flooding happened in the middle of the night, and it happened within a matter of hours. Everybody went to bed thinking it was just another day of rain and awoke to their worst nightmares. A typical amount of rain, on a day with a good amount of rain, is one- half to _maybe_ one inch. That day, they got over 5 inches of rain in maybe 6 hours.
It happened so fast, especially if you lived near the little Sioux river.
Thanks NEXRAD. No matter where you live get Flood Insurance. It just may be the Insurance industry that puts the brakes on these weather modification activities.

All kinds of boats. Motorized boats at one point were turned away bc you didn't know what was under the water. There was no prior warning via text, siren, etc about evacuating. It hit so fast.

Take a look at all these places across the planet that are flooding and remember two words with regard to the “weather” like this: Frequency. Intensity. This right here is the “change” part of climate change. It doesn’t have to be Hollywood, it only needs to be intense enough to overwhelm human systems and frequently enough to render those local economies moot to combat it.
