This song was released during the Vietnam war and this was an anthem / theme song for the soldiers over there. They wanted so badly for the war to end so they could get out of there and go home. My uncle Donald Lint was a Marine in Vietnam.
Yes, a favorite song for the Vietnam War. Next to do - Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
That’s another good one.
Not written for that purpose, but it became the greatest foxhole song of all time.
Other suggestions: It's My Life, Don't Bring Me Down, Sky Pilot. Actually hear their version of River Deep, Mountain High. Eric is all over the place with that one. The band really improvises that one like a random jam session out of left field.
And Sky pilot the long version.
After The Animals, Eric Burdon, the lead singer, joined an LA-based psychedelic funk band called War. Their biggest hit with Burdon on lead is called "Spill the Wine" and it's delightfully weird.
Great song when stoned.
Yeah do it
It's distant memory but for some reason I thought their song Why Can't We Be Friends was a much bigger hit? But either way it's all fantastic. And I love all the animals stuff as well and I got to see him once in 1979 from about ten feet away on a dance floor about that far just from the band. It was in Wichita Kansas at a place called the coyote Club.
@@stevedahlberg8680 War had multiple hits as well after Eric Burdon left. "Low Rider" was their biggest hit overall, plus they had "Why Can't We Be Friends" and "Sisco Kid".
After that, he managed Jimi Hendrix too
Great song! Eric Burdon & The Animals had a lot of great hits in the 60's such as "Baby Let Me Take You Home", "I'm Crying", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", "Bring It On Home to Me", "It's My Life", "Don't Bring Me Down", "See See Rider", "Monterey", "Sky Pilot" etc. Eric later joined the funk rock band "War" & they had a few hits "Spill the Wine" & "Tobacco Road".
And House of the rising sun
This was one of the best teen angst songs of its day. It expressed the way so many of us felt from the inner cities. Great reaction
This song was written by songwriting dou Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil who wrote many big songs from the 60s and on including the Righteous Brothers songs like You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling and Soul And Inspiration.
I remember taking a break from studying for finals in college and going out dancing. The local band covered this, and all the students were screaming the chorus at the top of their voices: We REALLY wanted to get out of that place! 😅
This song was used at the end of the intro to the TV show Tour of Duty. I believe it was the second year of the show. War protest songs on the 1960s
The anthem of my teen years. I'm glad to see you got into the chorus like we did.
In 1965 I was in Tech School at Chanute AFB ... and any night this song was SCREAMED by the entire Airman's Club any time it was played...
Then in 1968/69 when I was in Vietnam... it was the American GI anthem...
Great reaction. And Sam would have definitely been a stone rocker in the 60s.
Thank you for your service! I was at Chanute AFB in late 74 early 75.
@@Sammylu-greenbeatsred It was my honor and privilege to serve this nation.
Thank you for your service.
My dad - same name as me - was at Chanute 20 years before me, and the old wooden open bay barracks I lived in were condemned when he was there.
@@ralphkern380
That's amazing that you and your dad were at the same base. I wouldn't trade my time in the Air Force for anything. I got out after 4 years but sometimes I wish I would have stayed in.
@@Sammylu-greenbeatsred Yeah. The "Old Man" enlisted in the cavalry in 1933, and served in the cavalry, field artillery, Army Air Corps, Army Air Force and finally in the USAF. He was one of the first to wear USAF blues.
Lots of hits for this great band. Eric Burdon's voice was truly amazing. Thanks for your reaction.
Eric Burdon is a legend..
Eric Burdon : a black voice trapped inside a white gnome. They had a dray load of dark classics when I was growing up. Just fantastic.
..."Class of 76"...Very popular in Vietnam...Eric was 22 or 23 when this song was released. Please follow Eric's transition to War and when you get to War others in that band have hits like "Low Rider" live version please! Oh before you go to War "Don't let me be Misunderstood" is a must!
A song that helped shape my musical tastes as a teen in the 60's.
1965/1966 time frame. I was a senior in high school and we seniors would sing "We gotta get outta this place if its the last thing we ever do" between classes. Some songs were recycled in movie soundtracks. This was likely part of a Vietnam War movie too. Cant remember which one.
Listen to their song, “When I Was Young”.
I grew up on a farm outside a small town in Missouri. This song was sort of an anthem for us in high school. After college I did get out of this place - I moved to Southern California.
Great "Shouter" ... saw Eric at least 50+ times live! He is in my Top20 list of my live concerts ... I couldn't resists his music with War, The Animals, Eric Burdon & The New Animals, etc. ♥
But that's quite a long time ago! If I rember right - without looking at the tour shirt - the last time I saw (and met) Eric live was back in 1997. Damn! I am getting (or are) old! ^^+gg
Was definitely the theme song for Vietnam-era military, in-country, overseas, and Stateside. Thanks for the review.
first live concert ever mid 60s the animals grossmont college san diego ca i was hooked they were great
Only one year after they did House of the rising sun and already so much more rock feeling - times were changing rapidly
This and “House Of The Rising Sun” are epic.
#hangovergang forever 🤙🏽
DON'T LET ME BE MISUNDERSTOOD 😊
Another great from that era is Santana. His newer stuff like "Put your lights on" featuring Everlast and "Smooth" with Rob Thomas are both FIRE!
Another great legendary tune by this memorable band!
Vietnam-1971 this song brings back memories.
Great reaction! This band was part of the early wave of rock and roll and brought the sound of British Blues with them. They were slightly before my time in their prime but I definitely became a fan later. Sky Pilot was a song I really enjoyed.
The Animals were so very awesome! Love your reactions!
They have alot more worth listening to!
The Great British Invasion...what a time for music. The Animals were one of the monsters! 😎👏👏👏👏👏👏🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I'm from the North East of England like the Animals and in the 60s it was a rough place where your dad would more than likely work in a heavy manual job like a shipyard or coal mine so this song was an obvious choice for them.
San Francisco Nights and Sky Pilot great songs by the Animals.
Close, it's San Franciscan Nights, great tune.
@@rmacdougallaliasdogviticus haha autocorrect my friend
One of my Football coaches who also taught Drivers Ed was a Marine in Nam at Da Nang only time he said anything about his tour was “ Living Hell on Earth “ Coach Clark Collins many thanks Sir 🫡
You're probably spot on about troops in Vietnam and this song. Just that one title line "we gotta get out of this place" would catch their ear and plus it's just a great song.
Other good songs by the Animals. It's My Life, Don't Bring Me Down, Sky Pilot, Bring It On Home To Me.
That scream at 6:45 is what those guys were doing in 'Nam. For a lighter side of Eric Burdon, I strongly suggest his collaboration with War on 'Spill the Wine'. It is funky, trippy, and a little bit spicy. The video on that is a must. Thanks for this look at the band; I wasn't sure whether or not Alan Price was gone by this time, and apparently, he was.
I find it hard to believe this song had NOT been heard before!!!
I would argue that maybe Eric Burdon didn't invent heavy metal but he DEFINITELY invented the voice for it! He just really lets out those soulful vocals! I think maybe some of the later metal bands may have cited the Animals or simply Eric as an influence because he HAD the voice. Kinda like a British Jim Morrison.
Then there is the ultimate, House Of The Rising Sun.
Great reaction. Listen to It’s My Life by the Animals next. You’ll enjoy it.
The bassist, Chas Chandler was Jimi Hendrix's manager. He ended up having a successful career as a music industry exec.
Love this song! Two other smash hits were "It's My Life" and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood". On a side note the bass player Chas Chandler worked with Jimi Hendrix as manager and helped produce the early hits by The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
I can attest - A favorite G.I. singalong in RVN circa '69.
The Animals were early in the time period of the style of music they were doing and if you listen to some of the top bands of a few years later you can really see how the Animals and their focusing on the Keyboards central aspect in their music was in some ways the beginning of a trend some main stream bands used in Rock music.
Eric Burdon still tours. He is 80.
Over the years the group had numerous personnel changes but lead singer Eric Burdon was the one constant and the main focus.
Way before my time but has been on every playlist in the last 20 years. ST.
In the 70's Blue Oyster Cult covered this on a live album. Rocked a bit more. Didn't have Eric Burdons' vocals though.
The bassist, Chas Chandler, was responsible for "discovering" and managing Jimi Hendrix.
Love Eric Burdon / Animals. I'd like to suggest one of his biggest hits with a note. Eric has about 5 or 6 versions of the song "Don't let me be misunderstood". I recommend the one from the best unknown record ever! 'Sun Secrets' from 1974. Not sure I can post a link as Facebook flagged me when I posted a link to what I thought was the best version of Heart - Crazy on you the other day so no link today. Search for 'Eric Burdon - Don't let me be misunderstood (1974)' as posted by rockclubvictoria.
I saw Eric Burdon with War. Great concert small venue.
The Stines were cool, the Beatles were cute, the Animals with Eric Burden were a different story. Eric always looked like an Everyman. He looked like he was going to kick someone’s ass.
The Stones and the Who were crazy guys. Thats why I preferred them to the Beatles.
BACKKKK TO THE ANIMALS!!! 😊
Great song. "It's My Life" is another one!
I still go to see Eric every time he's in the area.
Chas on bass was the manager of Jimi Hendrix.
And Slade
Rock and roll and Vietnamese weed were the only comforts those guys had over there.
Hey Phil and the lovely, gorgeous Sam maybe you should check out the Animals TV performance of Inside Looking Out which you've reacted to from Grand Funk Railroads' studio and live cover versions. I also recommend Eric Burdon & War performing Spill The Wine on the German TV show Beat Club from 1970. The Animals were heavily related with the fortunes of Jimi Hendrix. Chas Chandler (bassist) discovered him in New York and brought Jimi to London in 1966 to make him into a star, producing Jimi's first 2 albums. On the night Jimi died in London 1970 he attended an Eric Burdon and War gig and jumped on stage to play along for a couple of numbers. The next morning when Jimi's girlfriend Monika Danneman couldn't rouse him the first person she telephoned was Eric Burdon. Eric advised her to make Jimi some coffee and slap him awake. Of course, Jimi was RIP.
Eric delivers with attitude 👌
AEWSOME SONG AMONG MANY FROM ERIC BURDON AND THE ANIMALS.{M.G}orig. TORONTO, CANADA.
This song was big wiith those of us who served during Nam Another would be run through the Jungle by CCR The Animaals have quite a few good songs Haha Im getting to the end of your reaction and you heras about that. Another by CCR is Fortunate son War protest songs were huge back then These songs alwaats bring me back to those days USMC 68-72
Our unofficial high school song in 1968.
We need more of the Animals and more of Sam's legs lol, love your reactions
Now you have to react to the Animals performance at the Monterey Music Festival.
Can highly recommend "It's My Life" and "Sky Pilot" (A War protest song)
Another great Animal tune!!
I thought it was about getting out of the place he was born, near Newcastle which was on a polluted river.
The animals discovered Jimmy Hendrix try his song Hey Joe he his fantastic 😮😮😮😮
'when i was young' is my animals suggestion
🎉 Since you mentioned the Vietnam war…check out their song about WWll, “Sky Pilot.” It’s a long, storytelling, banger!!!
You hear we got to get out of here from the animals in a lot of old Vietnam movies
The song was originally about growing up and life in a poor, crowded, dirty English industrial city.
Those were the days. Eric was pretty cool..
Guys try W.A.S.P "Blind in Texas".
I only just learnt that the bass guitarist promoted Jimmy Hendrix using his own money
The bass player Chas chandler managed Jimmy Hendrix for a while. He brought him over to the uk
Hey B&B, I've got a great heads up for you. Have you ever heard of the dance/disco band Santa Esmeralda from the '80's? They did two awesome cover
versions of The Animals songs "House Of The Rising Sun" and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood (extended version). These songs are heavily influenced
by Spanish music and each is 15 - 16 minutes long. They would make for great gym workout songs or just for fun party dancing. Enjoy!
please do War Same singer, totally different feel!
After The Animals broke up, the base player became the manager for Jimi Hendrix.
Australian band The Angels do a blistering version of this
Eric Burdon is one of the greatest singers ever, hats off to the entire band. Actually he's one of my favorite singers better. Thankfully there was a British invasion regarding music. Their in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and surely deserve. This great song and Sky Pilot are my favorites tho I really dig others by them.
Just an observation...the red border you guys put at the bottom of your thumbnails makes it appear in someone's feed that the video has already been watched.
Eric burdon vocal.chas Chandler bass
John steel drums.hilton valentine guitar.alan price keyboard.
Doesn't look like Alan Price on the video, I think he'd already left the band by then and been replaced by Dave Rowberry.
Is that ring I see on Sam's finger? If so, congrats to y'all.
Damn, Eric Burdon is about 85 now.
An anthem for anyone trapped in a bad place
Its all about escaping from a dead end industrial town.
Its about Vietnam war which the US never won
Which is odd a the band is from Newcastle in the North of England
Do some music from bands that are current now. They need the pub. Plus these are of the here and now
58,000 "never got out of that place"
London group Bethnal did a great version in 1978. Was the shirt matching the chair a conscious decision?
Please review Oh Darling by The Beatles
It isn't very hard to guess what this songs about. Clearly it is about the struggles of the working class
Member Chas Chandler who went on to manage Jimi Hendrix and the most successful singles artists of the 70’s…..Slade, speaking of which how about a reaction to them.
Cum on Feel the Noize, Take me Bak ‘ome, Mama we’er all Crazee now to name but a few as there’s loads of hits 🙏
Bars and BarBelles
You should check out the song Cara Mia by Jay and the Americans. I really believe you will be suprised.
❤Eric Burdon
Our motto about leaving Vietnam. I couldn't wait to leave and will NEVER go back there.
As someone mentioned "Spill the Wine" that Eric did with War is "Delightfully Weird" but also very good. Think Bourdon said it was kinda about taking a woman's virginity.
