I wish the Kia had the 2.5T combined with the hybrid system in this vehicle. That engine combo would be powerful enough that they could share it with the Telluride/Palisade and it would still probably get 35mpg city in the FWD Sorento.

"It has a new front end, but basically this is the same Highlander you've seen for a while."
Dang Nathan, love your guys' channel, but the misinformation was pretty strong in this one! That is absolutely NOT true. The Highlander was completely redesigned inside & out for the 2020 model year. The previous generation Highlander Hybrid used a V6, the current one uses a 4 cylinder. & the entire exterior & interior are not even remotely similar between the previous generation & the current one.

Actually, the Highlander hybrid has a 3500 LB towing capacity. Not 3000 lb. And when I compared the Kia options, yes the Sorento and Telluride, I still feel the Highlander is a better choice all around. But maybe I'm bias as well, because this little thing called "resale value" plays a huge part in vehicles I buy. I live in Colorado too by the way. Thanks so much for your reviews! You always do such a good job.

Such a shame the Sorento is not AWD or 4x4 like its predecesors I had one of the last body on frame ones and loved it, but needed a pickup double cab for my business and Kia did not do one shame the Sorento would have made a very good pickup, so I had to go with a Chevy Rodeo not my smartest buy but did what it needed to.

  • @stehir9260

Why is Toyota known from better resale value? Here are a two examples.
A KIA flaw that I have heard of is wheel bearing life. They often go at around 100K. I don't know if KIA have improved their quality yet but I am sure it is a big undeclared money maker for them if they have not. Doesn't sound like a big deal but they are $500 X 4 when you have to replace them. Just one example of Toyota quality giving better resale. You seldom hear about bad wheel bearings early in the life of Toyotas and then it is often only one of the 4 that goes.
Another elephant in the room is timing chains vs belts (replacement cost and life) and interference vs non interference engines. A timing belt replacement can cost big $ and it is like gambling if you have an interference engine. Toyota tends to have timing chains and non-interference engines. Toyota has better resale because quite frankly they are built to last longer. Honda for example has a LOT of timing belt engines with interference engines that will self destruct if the belt blows.

Really, all 4 wheel bearings bad on a Toyota at 80k? This has certainly happened with KIAs. A bad wheel bearing is a glitch, all 4 is an issue that long term owners should be aware of.

Now hybrid Highlander carries 2.5L 4 cylinder gas engine vs previous generation's 3.5L 6 cylinder gasoline engine. We are shopping for a minivan replacement (Toyota sienna) and the family (6) climbed into the Highlander and instantly vetoed it. Felt far more cramped and uncomfortable than the Sorento. As much as my wife still thinks of Kia as a budget brand we have twice ended our day of car shopping back at the Kia dealer eyeballing a Sorento Hybrid.

I love Toyota but not a fan of CVT. Also not a fan of E-AWD system on Toyota hybrids. If Toyota use their 8 speed automatic and torque vectoring AWD on the hybrid I'm in, if not no thanks. I don't like the dynamic torque control AWD on lower trims of gas Highlander as well, that is outdated. Should use torque vectoring AWD across all trims. Same story for Rav4.

One thing I've noticed about Toyotas is that they drive oh so boring. At least other car manufacturers give their vehicles some fun and zippiness. I bought a Toyota because their reliable, but now regretting my decision. You spend so much time in your car. It needs to be fun and enjoyable, not just get you from A to B in the most mediocre way possible. I think the reason Toyotas are so reliable is because the ECM won't allow you to have any fun, therefore, you can't wear them out.

what I hate about such reviews is that the reviewer never says how those cars behave after 3-5 years. Maybe late for comments, but the Kia now offers AWD. Now, after returning from a very long trip with the wife and two kids (4 and 7) and having lots of family on my destination, I could benefit from having a 6 or 7 passenger vehicle. I currently own a cx5 which we like how it drives, but for long trips it's cramped and once we got to my wife's parents we struggled with space since just to move around we had to sit the kids on their laps (not legal o know) since they are a older couple who don't own a vehicle. So having a set of captain seats works great for long hours and those small third row seats are actually meant for kids, so they should be marketed as such

Interesting. In the UK only the hybrid and diesel are offered. The hybrid comes in three trims with only the lowest trim offered in front wheel drive. All others are 4wd only. The diesel only comes in mid trim level and loses out on cooled memory seats, the moonroof and the all round cameras. Pretty much everything else is included though, including rear seat climate controls and vents, which you don't get. The doors are great, because they extend down and cover the sills, so you don't get your trousers or legs plastered with cow shit, or any other shit, when getting in and out.

And that it's just a KIA comment is so 90s and early 00s. It has evolved since then with a new company logo and all. Ironically, people who only drives domestic cars way back then said the same thing about Toyota or any foreign cars. It's just a Toyota. Or buy American. Kia is more than a "Just" now. If I have to choose, I'm going with the Sorento. The styling and tech alone stood out to me. It has a youthful appearance. The Highlander just give me middle-aged house wife vibes. Nothing rugged about it.

It is very curious claims about good quality fuel used to prevent carbon build-up when the problem is that fuel does not touch the back of the valve. How does good quality fuel works in this case?

    • @haroldbeauchamp3770

Direct injection carbon buildup is largely an issue of yesteryear. There will always be a small amount of buildup, however better breathing pcv systems, higher detergent oils, valve overlap, increase intake temperatures have vastly reduced carbon buildup.

I told them for me good quality audio is a must in the car and their cars are not in my list just because of that!
