Grow a lemon Tree
how to grow lemon trees from a lemon seeds. You can use this method to grow just about any citrus tree bought from the grocery store. I tested multiple methods for growing lemon trees for seeds. I think planting lemon seeds directly into the soil works the best.

If you grow from seed from a store it's not likely to ever make a lemon if it even produces fruit. Commercial lemons are grafted to root stock and the fruits seeds will reflect the root stock not the fruit. I did the same thing 7 year ago.

@@Valentina-yo9ec Typical I think it is but in that case it might be an avocado just not the type you purchased.
@@Valentina-yo9ec The answer is yes. All Hass avocados came from one tree, and was grafted onto other avocado trees to bear the same fruit. Plants have hidden genetics too, just like animals. So your own seed could have been naturally weak/never bare fruit/bare tiny little avocados/basically could have any combination of avocado genes. The only way to 100% guarantee you get big fruit is to buy an already grafted hass(or other variety) avocado tree.
Try doing multiple seeds if you try again, hopefully one will grow from there. Avocados are notorious for being difficult to grow due to needy conditions and fungus. I've had luck so far with my first and only attempt, but make no mistake. My avocado should be 3-4 feet by normal standards and it's only a foot tall. Best of luck to your avocado adventures!
I had a tree in my garden in Arizona called a 'cocktail tree'. The tree had oranges, lemons and grapefruit all on the same tree. They take a grapefruit tree and graft on a lemon sapling and an orange sapling. The grafted on branches continue to produce their own particular fruit.

When I was in 7th grade, I really wanted to grow my own lemon tree from seed. I went on to just place a few seeds on soil like you did. It took them a few weeks and I remember I got so excited when they sprouted. I took a really good care of them for a few years. I even bought a citrus fertilizer. After 9th grade, and before I went to culinary school, I became a little depressed and I lost all of my passion for everything. The plants sadly died. Now more than a decade later I've been thinking about growing lemons again. It's one of my favorite fruits. 🍋

We had an orange tree like that. It did eventually grow a bit and bear fruit.

Just another fun thing, you guys can actually use the young lemon/lime leaves as herbs. Finely chop them up and then sprinkle them on top of roasted chicken (or chicken that is cooked any way you like), lemon/lime leaves add amazing flavour to your dish!

My seed grown lemon tree which I had for eleven years, never even flowered. But produced lots of beautiful foliage. I also found that the leaves, really do make a delicious ingredient to some dishes.

if it produces high quality lemons dont grow them from seeds.
make a clone.
all you need is to choose a branch, remove part of the bark, smear a bit of root growth hormone(optional but it helps) and attach a small bag of moist soil in the area where you cut the bark, and observe it for like 1-2 months, until it starts to grow its own roots. then carefully cut it off the tree and plant it, and you have an exact clone of your lemon tree.
seeds have genetic variations, clones dont.

Yep, same here, I'm probably going to have to stop soon, but if I can find a sweet lemon, I'll probably try to grow that. They taste kind of like lemon water and they're intended to be eating kind of like an orange.

I am 75. Years ago (approximately 40) there was a “how to” that floated around and everyone tried it! You needed the following, a saucer, cotton balls, a shot glass and the seeds of a lemon. You dip the cotton balls in water, place on a saucer, place lemon seeds on top of the cotton ball and cover with an upside down shot glass. Then take the saucer and put it on top of the refrigerator and forget it.
Of course with it up there, out of sight, it is easy to forget about! Weeks later I was cleaning off the refrigerator and lo and behold there was that darn shot glass! I pull it off the top and look and there were roots growing out one side and tiny shoots of green! I planted the seeds in a small pot of soil and stuck it in the window and darned if it didn’t grow! Of course you had to keep transplanting it to larger and larger pots but yes it did grow! As someone else mentioned, it will never produce lemons you can eat and I finally lost interest when I moved into a house that did not support indoor plants and I gave it away! It was a healthy three feet tall and bushy!
But that gives you yet another method to try. I guess the reason they wanted you to leave it UN disturbed was so that it maintained that moisture to promote initial growth! Have fun!

My propagation book said it takes at least 15 years to produce fruit. I had a lemon tree and waited so long. Looked it up in my book and it said you had to wait at least 15 years. My little tree died from a freeze before it could produce lemons.🙁

Quarantine has allowed me to discover that i have a green thumb.
I started a whole garden full of celery, tomato green onion, peppers, LEMONS, limes, loquats, avocado, oranges, and strawberries.
Im quite proud of myself lmao thanks for the lemony help!
When it comes to food, it doesn't take many plants or much space to make a significant difference in how you're eating. I'm personally trying to grow strawberries and salad greens indoors. I'm hoping to find a sweet lemon to grow indoors as well.

Andrew Hunt Very true indeed. It's amazing this. I'm going to try it. I use lots of lemons in cooking. I live in the UK 🇬🇧, damp, cold climate so don't know how the plants will fare. I wonder if they need to be kept in greenhouse?
@@katzwhite5962 some lemon varieties can be okay to -5°c so it depends where you are in the UK really. If you've got a walled garden in London; probably okay outside. If you're on a windswept Yorkshire Moor, I'd have it in a pot and put outside for summer only. I'm in Wales and we just planted a lemon tree and a calamondrin orange in our polytunnel. They had them cheap at LIDL last week, like £2.50 for a 40cm tall plant.

There things you need to know before growing a lemon tree from a seed:
1) It most likely won't be the same lemon cultivar you get the seeds from. This is due to lemons don't breed true from seeds.
2) There are gonna be 1-2 inches of thorn of the lemon tree. This is because thorns are a prevalent feature of young citrus plants. When they get older (many years), the thorns will shorten and eventually kinda disappear, but that's gonna be a long time. If you grow lemon trees from a cutting of already thornless tree, this can be prevented, this is because growing something asexually do not reset the "timer" unlike growing something from seed does.
3) The fruit you get might not be palatable or even edible. You can get fruits with very thick rind with dry flesh. How to find that out? See the next point.
4) It is gonna be 3-5 years for the tree to fruit if you grow it from seed. Thus, if the one you grew from seed is a lemon tree with terrible fruit, it's gonna take years before you find that out.
5) There is something good about growing lemon trees from seed tho: Although very unlikely, it is possible that you can get a new edible cultivar in this way. That's actually how most of our domesticated fruit trees been through. Mutation from sexual reproduction (seeds) is essential to get something very different from the parental plants.
6) Last but not least, it is a very fun thing to do, especially you had no prior experience working with seed like this.

@@jackieweaver3884 well you will have lemons, but it is probably not palatable, no much juice due to too little pulp. If you want to plant a lemon tree, just get one from the nursery or air-layered cutting.

Thanks for the lesson. Our neighbour’s lemon tree is so healthy despite not getting any special treatment, perhaps it’s just a rather strong tree and doesn’t need a lot of human care. Anyway, we picked more than a dozen huge lemons last week (as long as the branches are over the fence, the local law says we are allowed to pick fruits from a neighbour’s tree), and after enjoying lemon meringue pies and lemon cakes and some lemon curd, it dawned on us that maybe we should try and grow our own tree from these delicious fruits so that we can have all the lemons that we could eat.

I brought lemon seeds through to grow from my brothers garden. They are a sweet lemon that used to grow on my uncles Farm. They were just not germinating and I was worried they would rot away because our weather is still cold even though this time of year it shouldn’t be. I put them originally in cotton wool pads but weeks later still not germinated. I finally purchased a heat mat for seeds and finally they germinated 😁

Edit: about a year later I decided that the sapling was now ready to plant and I did, we have many areas for trees and I planted it on a very large area. Now, I have a “Starting Garden” on my windowsill with Venus flytraps, cacti, two mango seeds, forget-me-nots, daisys,and apple seeds, during quarantine I have taken a liking to it and learned a lot from this video. About genetic lottery, and the growth of saplings, I hope this video can inspire other kids to take a liking, (to literally) planting the seeds fro the future.

You are not forgotten or ever will be forsaken. You are special. You are unique. You are one of a kind. You have been reserved for this time and The Lord needs you on His side.
It simply would not be the same without you. That's just how much the Lord need you on His side.

NOTE: The chlorosis he was seeing on the leaves could have been iron OR nitrogen deficiency, especially since there was no fertilizer added at all. Since the leaves changed and the chlorosis improved on existing leaves, that indicates it was likely nitrogen - not iron - deficient.

Your right. It was from removing the shell. Seeds need the seed pod for nutrients. It helps give the plant energy to grow. When it has used up all the nutrients, the pod drops off. It's like little baby fish, that have a egg sac, at birth. It feeds them, until they can eat in their own. So that plant was deprived of nutrients, and the soil was not enough.
Is it possible that peeled seeds he put in plastic bag didn't germinate because he put too much water, or they don't have any air?
@@0omateoo26 The primary function of the seed coat (the 'peeling' that was removed) is protection. High moisture and low air flow will certainly facilitate fungal and bacterial growth, which is likely what killed those seeds, and removing the seed coat certainly made them more vulnerable to those organisms.
Hi Brigette, I have a lime tree which doesn't give limes. I greet from seed. This summer the leafs started to roll green and dry. I removed those and now the rest continues to do the same. Does it required those nutrients? Is it the heat? Also there's lots of thorns, was wondering if I should cut those branches out or leave it. Also, should I graft it with a Lemmon branch from another tree to get fruit?

I will be updating this:
Day 1: Planted 8 peeled seeds in seed raising mix. I have put some glad wrap over with some air holes. I water if there is any dryness on the surface.
Day 12: 2 seeds have sprouted
Day 13: 3rd seed sprouted
Day 14: 2 more seeds sprouted (5 of 8), the first seed seems to have sprouted 2 seedlings (I know this as I planted each seed in different trays).
Day 20: at this point there are 6 sprouts, a 7th one seems to be sprouting (I saw the seed on the surface thought it was dead, pulled it, there was a root so I put it back in).
How is your seedlings now?
@@LolaRabbit Fairly good. So out of the 10 I planted, 2 of them died, one of them was a runt, one of them seemed to have a fungus infection.
But of the 6 remaining, they are growing strong with fairly sizable leaves for their age.

I found a good way to help with peeling the husk off the seeds is to use a pair of nail clippers and just nip off the tip of the pointed end of the seed, this will usually leave an opening where something sharp can be inserted to start peeling back the shell.
Was thinking about buying a lemon tree at a nursery but this just gave me the inspiration to grow one, thanks.
the ones at the nursery are probably grafted and will bear fruit much quicker just so you know, from seed could take 5 years and you might get poor quality lemons
I bought a lemon tree from Home Depot but it came with scale that seemed to improve a bit after I wiped off the bumps with rubbing alcohol and placed it outside in the summer, but it ended up not surviving. Starting your own tree in good soil without pests might be the best way to get a lemon tree!

one thing I noticed with my lemon trees. They like being played with. They like when you play with the leaves and talk to them. I have four planted in the same pot, the two I couldnt reach (around the snake plant they are beside) to touch, didnt grow nearly as fast or full as the ones I petted daily. Plants are very intuitive, more so than people realize.

I also touched my lemon trees every day. I told them I loved them . when I moved to Nashville someone stole my two 7 ft lemon trees. I was sick. I know they were not Happy to be taken away. They were 4 yrs old.

Absolutely awesome video, I always look for the videos that have updates within them to make things a lot more simpler as well as to be able to track the cycle and or the progress of the plant. I’m very grateful for the time in all the tremendous effort you put into creating this great video. Thank you so much… I thought a growing from seed a long time ago that I harvest from some lemons which I got from the market however I didn’t do a very good job and they died off. I got a lemon from a 800years old tree. I though those were great genes! Three seeds out of 8 were successful, one is struggling the other two look like 20 days old but are actually 14 months. I learned that lemon threes don't like much water and like to be under sun. I will invest on iron and good fertilizer! Thanks!

If you want a tree that will have the same caracteristics of that 800 years old one, you probably want to start it from a branch, since it essentially will grow into a tree with the exact same DNA. When you start a tree from seed it will always be in some way different than the tree where they came from since their DNA will be different much like a parent and a child.

800y old seems improbable... Normal citrus lifespan about 50y, there's some around 150y, oldest US orange tree is 175y? Any documentation/link to super old citrus I'm interested.

I sprouted a clementine tree a couple of years ago, planted it in a friend's polytunnel which gets strong sun, then went away for a year and a half. Came back. Where's my tree? "Ahh yeah... the sheep got into the polytunnel... it's that little stick over there."
This week we noticed it's starting to bud out some tiny new leaves! I'm very excited.

I stripped the husk off of 8 seeds from one lemon and sprouted them using the paper towel method. Out of the eight that sprouted I ended up with two beautiful lemon trees. It really required a bit of effort to end up with two healthy trees. They really established themselves in the container and it will be interesting to see if they actually bear fruit. Whether they do or not they are still welcome in our house for the foliage.

When you see thorns like that, they're "suckers". Citrus trees are notorious for having suckers grow, especially when they're young. They're essentially a nutritional sucker for seedlings and trees. If you take off that stem, the tree will grow faster and healthier.

'A nutritional sucker' aka another main stem for the plant, which will result in a bushier and more compact tree. If you're growing it as an indoor plant, it's actually better to encourage those, as it'll make the trunk thicker, and result in a wider canopy, instead of one leggy trunk with a few leaves on top.
Also Suckers also come when the plant is in stress, such as for vitamin deficiency. etc. It is nature's way of trying to save the plant, when the main plant is in stress, a sicker will appear just in case the main plant does not make it, the sucker will continue to grow. Citrus plants are heavy feeders.Its signaling to give the plant nutrients.
Thorns are present on vigorous growth low on the trunk as well as any other rapid growth. They are especially prevalent on immature, vegetative growth. As the tree matures the thorns on new growth are shorter, or absent, unless the cultivar is genetically disposed to thorniness. Suckers will eventually mature into productive branches, if their location doesn't interfere with the structural scaffolding of the tree. However, suckers growing below the graft union on a grafted tree are undesirable and need to be removed, as they will dominate and overtake the rest of the tree.
I have a tree which I grew from seed that has plenty. I thought it was because it's a lime and not a Lemmon. Big question is should I get ridd of it? I just have one and it looks like it's a male plant, no fruits or flowers. Can I try to do with the Lemmon tree a graft and see what happens?

I live in Calgary Alberta and grew a lemon from seed almost 20 years ago. It is now around 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide, I put it outside late May and back indoors late September , it doesn't grow lemons but is beautiful anyway. Nice video, good luck everyone!!!

I just let the seed sit on a windowsill to dry a day or two, pop them into the soil with my finger, water the soil, and a week later I see growth (an old way I learned from my Mom), it has never failed me. It works for all fruits and vegetables too.

I had 4 lemon trees. They developed to about 24" tall and I gave them all but one away. The one I kept, I kept pruning to get more height. I inserted the cuttings directly into dirt and within 2 months, they all took root and we outgrowing their pots. No fruit so far. The citrus food pellets is great stuff! Thanks for sharing. It would be interesting to compare notes with you on Medjool date palms.

You can make your own citrus friendly soil mix by combining 5 parts pine bark (like bark mulch or bark reptile substrate, 1 part perlite, and 1 part regular soil/coir/peat. It should be well draining (be able to dry out between waterings) as they don't like their roots to stay wet. I have a lime tree thriving in this mixture so it does work well.
I have a volunteer citrus plant on my backyard which took more than 10yrs to grow limes. It is a real survivor bcoz we never watered it or fed it. It only got water during the monsoons, and still managed to make it this far in the tropics and finally fruit :)
