    Folks must realize that simple does NOT mean easy. This is a very physical life, growing food, raising chickens, cutting wood for the wood stove to keep warm. Thinking simple means easy is a romantic idea not based in reality. There is beauty in homesteading, but it is not for the faint of heart. When you get older, or injured or have health issues creep up on you, simple becomes not so simple. We are in our 60's, my husband a disabled Air Force veteran and have lived on our mountain property for almost 19 years, but it is a daily struggle to grow our gardens and do daily tending of the land and the flocks. I would not want to be anywhere else. I have lost my tolerance for people and artificial noise. The country has gone very soft and often the dream is much more difficult than folks imagine. ~Cynthia

      @mrsvirginiamissouri 3 ปีที่แล้ว +126

      This is very true. So, we opted to do a less-advanced level of 'simple.' We moved to Puerto Rico. We very, very seldom run our a/c which lowers our electric bill. My entertainment has gone from 'ladies who lunch', shopping, movies, theatre, travel, to walks on the beach, reading, writing, visiting with friends, board games, cutting fresh flowers, and playing the ukelele. I don't even have a car. I do have a golf cart if I need to get somewhere that's a little far to walk. I make more things from scratch and eat fresher food. It's not the same as homesteading by any means, but I think for people who think they really want to shut down and be simple, there are more advanced ways of doing so.

      Thanks for sharing that. I've never considered this type of living easy. It even looks hard, upkeep is constant and necessary. There's so much goodness in it when you are physically able. But modern living has spoiled most of us and we would feel absolutely miserable without some of the appliances and modernized, technological tools that most of us are relying on with grid capabilities

  • @thompsona10625
    @thompsona10625 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1761

    For tens of thousands of years, humans lived a “simple life” where we sustained our lives and our families with our bare hands and hard work. Along comes the industrial revolution and in the blink of an eye, we stopped working with nature and began fighting her for superiority. In less than 100 years, a people that lived unchanged for eons became exposed and engrossed in a new modern industrial life that our brains were not easily adaptable to. We weren’t designed for modern life. We live it because it’s the norm but in the large picture, we’ve only lived this way for a moment. Now we have everything we need and want yet we’re depressed and killing ourselves in startling numbers. This guy has it all figured out. You can sleep at night because you’re tired from working hard. Bones, muscles, and joints are healthy because they’re use and maintained. It’s a blessed life with nothing but what you make yourself. Awesome!

    I grew up in rural India and own a coffee plantation in Coorg. In my youth I remember having a very self sufficient lifestyle. We had paddy, chicken, eggs, butter, curds, milk was always in stock as we had cows. The dung was used to manure the soil for fresh vegetables. Later industrialization changed everything. IT boom swept over and even I moved to Bangalore to become an IT infrastructure manager. I hardly had time with my family. This changed when one day I realized what I missed and threw spanner in the works, quit and came back to the life I love. It's a humongous task rebuilding the cycle. But at least I'm at peace with myself.

    I'm 16, I live in the countryside in the south of France (originally from England, been here only three years) but we live as off grid here as possible, enough to know how much hard work it is to live a simple life! I'm homeschooled, my parents and I don't believe in the school system, I don't want to be part of it. I have no interest at all in studying for college, going to university, getting this degree and taking that exam bla bla bla. It's nonsense, so absolutely unnecessary. If you think that's what being human, being lucky enough to experience a life on this beautiful planet is all about, then you need to unplug and unprogram yourself from the years of brainwashing, social conditioning and manipulation. That's not what life is about, spending so many years of your life depressed, stressed, unhappy within yourself always looking outside of yourself for happiness instead of within, but you don't get taught that in school do you. You see, society makes us believe we should be obsessed with work, always wanting more. I'm part of that crazy collective who will tell you to obsess over self awareness, mental health, deep connections, love and sustained happiness. Which you will never get working yourself through the ground your whole life being a slave to the government. You waste so much of your time learning about shit that doesn't even benefit you in your later life, then before you know it life's over. I don't care about being rich, living in a big house, having better material shite than everyone else, what a sad and pathetic mindset to have. I want to have a little wood cabin somewhere near a beach with my animals, where I grow my own food, make my own products, appreciating nature, this wonderful world, simply just living and making the most out of every second of it. This is what life's about

    For the past 14 years we have been living the simple life in a ninety year old cabin (that had no closets) completely hidden from view right in a historical southern city. It is very quiet and peaceful here. We've lived in large houses but this is our favorite. Our whole yard is an organic garden. The cabin is 467 square feet. We've dealt with raccoons, rats, possums, woodland roaches, mice, and other nasties over the years. Wildlife abounds just outside the front door, which was apparently designed for a Hobbit. We don't have a stove, only a couple of hot plates. We have had green houses but now use tunnels over raised beds in the winter. We used to pick greens from under the snow. I sprout and ferment and bake bread and cook everything from scratch but more and more we eat raw. We categorically aren't missing anything in life. I am a portrait artist, photographer, musician, writer, blogger, I sew and design clothes, we read books aloud, have a good library and study a lot. No TV at all. We built a rocket stove for the patio, which was completely buried and had to be dug up and expanded after we moved in. The whole cabin was covered with vines and the yard was full of volunteer trees. It took a long time to make the place beautiful and create 14 Mittleider garden beds. No one ever bothers us because we are hidden behind a distant remote gate. It is a wonderful place for the grandkids to come and escape the world. I teach them art and herbs and soap making and other stuff. I hand wash a lot of clothes so we visit the laundromat about once every 6 weeks. We are close to 2 walking tracks, grocery stores, a gym, a library, and our church is 12 minutes away. We go to bed at 7pm and get up at 3am. We leave for a walk between 4:30 and 5:30am, do private devotions, and exercise between 3 and 7am.
    All our activities center around home or the nearby James River or an enormous nearby park. Since my husband doesn't run marathons any more, we don't invest in travel, vacations, sports, or eating out! We do invest in our grandkids, who are, of course, the most amazing people on earth. Take it from an 80 year old, the simple life can be lived in town or country if you just use your noodle.

      I live in Tanzania East Africa, where 10 years ago life was extremely simple and peaceful, but as we get more exposed to the consumerism lifestyle of more developed nations we set that as the goal or measure of true development while it is the complete opposite. It really saddens me to see this happen, and i hope i can play a role in shifting this mindset back to its rightful place

    Living really off the grid now, is just as difficult. Nowadays it could be seen as trendy, like tiny house living..
    But both of those life styles have come around as being smart consumers or being kinder to yourself & the planet, while living a dream..
    My grandparents were living the dream but didn’t know it.. They had the best butter & cream, bacon & ham, fresh or canned vegetables,
    along with the most beautiful flowers. They worked hard everyday to have those wonderful things and it did get extremely difficult to produce those things as they grew older.. They were always very happy with their simple life..

      Everyone says you have to prepare. While I agree to an extent, you could easily spend the rest of your life "preparing". Sometimes you just gotta take that plunge and let things work themselves out. I had the dream but didn't have the courage. That's why I am 39 years old, live in my hometown, still in the house I graduated highschool from. I feel like now, though I really want to in my heart, I have too much holding me back. Especially my children's futures and their lives as well. It became not just about my dream anymore and I got stuck in the wheel. So while I advise not to be entirely impulsive, I say that if you have a dream, don't set it aside and wait for the time to be right. Work hard to get yourself there. Just my experience.

    It seems to me that what really happens when you choose a "simpler" life is choosing to forgo many of our modern technologies that make nearly everything *so convenient* that it doesn't take anywhere near as much work to LIVE anymore. And that's one of the things we NEED to find meaning!
    Living this kind of off-grid life means you do nearly everything yourself, and it takes more time and sweat to do it -- from cutting the grass to getting food to keeping warm to having clean water. But I believe that humans are healthiest, happiest, and at our most centered when we do manual work that coordinates our bodies and our minds, toward making life better for ourselves and others. And "better" doesn't always mean ultra-fast, ultra-convenient, and ultra-cheap, because that's not what *fulfills* us.
    And I see this to be true from the *glow* in your eyes, Kalle. You look ALIVE, and VIBRANT, and I think that is *because* you have land and a home to cultivate and work, and not have everything handed to you on a silver plate (or in an overnight-shipped amazon box lol).

    We all would be happier living like this/close to this I think.
    Im finding out more and more each day , iI feel" awakened. "
    People say to me," Oh why do you want to chop your own wood, make your own jelly, why pick blueberries for hours, etc.. When you can Just go to the store and buy some? You will save time" .
    Well.... I dont want" that time" to be honest. What would I do? Watch tv, surf on the net?our precious time?
    I feel something extremely fullfilling when I have done all that my self. It Feels like finding gold. It Feels like im suppose to do all those things.
    I go to bed at night an pat myself on the back for a good day work. Smiling, feeling good ☀️

I also decided to follow a simple life after leaving my fast life in NYC and moving to a small French village. I now live with less in the mountains of Corsica, and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Despite giving up a lot (friends, family, career, city comforts) I have never been happier or more fulfilled. Living a joyful life is definitely in needing and wanting less and appreciating the small delights 💕🤗

That said, you still need to pay rent or mortgage and keep the lights on and food on the table. How do you do that and not work like a dog? How can one afford that life without some type of income? Not all of us made a killing in the stock market nor has mutual funds to cash out...best of luck in Corsica!!
