Her legacy? Let's face it. She is the one who put people in the stands, she is the one who drew huge television ratings, she is the one with the charisma and class that a person has or doesn't. Billie Jean set the foundation, Chris Evert built the house. The champion of champions.

She was a star at a time when tennis was soaring in popularity. The men had stars too in Connors and Borg. Evert conveyed the image of a goody white girl and that has a big audience even today.

Hey, I modelled my two-handed backhand after Chris Evert. I would watch her matches then immediately go to the courts and try to hit the ball like her. I came out alright. I could always pass my opponent with my backhand. It was natural and instinctual. It was my strongest shot!

I'm female, but Chrissie was the reason I picked up a racquet in 1978 at age 10 and taught myself to play. I went on to play all four years in high school, and was ranked No. 3 my senior year. She was my idol! I loved watching her and Martina battle it out! Andy, I also developed a two-handed backhand like hers, and it was also my strongest shot!

You were an amazing competitor and so gracious and graceful on the court (and off it) win or lose (which obviously didn’t happen very often 😉) Love seeing you chatting with Sue Barker every year at Wimbledon too. True #fangirl here 👍🏻☺️

What an amazing interview by Chris Mckendry. She really hit so many topics in such a short period of time. And they were fresh questions. As a huge Evert fan, I've seen a lot of interviews with her and it was so nice not to hear the same old questions. And of course, Chris is so classy and smart. I hope the young players of today can follow her lead and give back to the game. But, I don't think that has happened for quite some time now.

I remember being at Kmart shopping, well not really I was in the TV section watching her lose her final match....there I am as a teenage boy sobbing she was leaving the sport....she was why I started playing in the 80s....just my Idol, her talent, her technique, her ability to stay focused and not let emotions dictate her externally, her being a true Champion, her compassion and empathy towards others, and even her taste in men lol thank you for being a constant in my life! Billie Jean King set up the WTA, and she established the women's pro tour. Evert and her fellow players contributed to its success, but it's ridiculous to say it would not be where it is without her.

    • @lenwelch2195
      @lenwelch2195 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@michelez715wrong, the reason king could negotiate bigger prize money was that Chris put butts in the seats. No one was rushing for a ticket to watch the 68 open final to see wade beat king. The tennis boom occurred because they saw this young femin8ne girl wallop the ball past the girls, control the points without fist pumping or grunting. She also complimented her opponent and never talked down the other players even when she won 6-2, 6-1 and there were so many matche s where Chris totally dominated. She kept her cool and the public s imagination made them want to play like Chris, they hit backhand with two hands and realized tennis could be a chess game. , with deep drives pinning serve and volleys back and they had to play her game. Public only cared to watch cjhirs,Evonne. Evonne didn’t have that killer instinct and promoters could never count on Evonne to reach her seeding. On any given day she could lose and not rouse herself to win. Chris was a sure thing so tv planned to cover more tournament knowing Chris would make it to the fina 80 percent of the tournaments she entered she reached the final. Tv didn’t even cover the womens final in slams live until Chris came al9ng. Every match Chris played in her first open in 71 was scheduled in stadiumm court and her second round match was covered by bud collins and the world watched this mentally strong player fend off 6 match points. Right there Chris became a star.king was in the stadium watching this and knew she had a product to sell. With Chris she could make a stand with a separate womens tour visited Jimmy evert to get Chris to sign on but Jimmy said no because he wanted Chris to be able to play the open and Wimbledon. Months later kings tour was accepted in the slams because who would Chris play? It was exciting to watch Chris compete against king court Evonne. ( Evonne wade court evert did not initially join kings tour ) I give king credit for having the guts to stand up to jack kramer who wanted to pay the women one tenth the prize money for winning the same level of tournaments but th e women were filling the stands and tv coverage had to have Chris on their schedule for ratings. Tennis courts across the country were empty prior to evert , by 74-75 you had to put your name on a waiting list for a court that you reserved for one hour then you had to get off if any one signed for the court and that happened most of the time.

These were great set of interviews put out by the WTA with Chrissie being the face of it. Quite enjoyable watching all these superb ladies who have given us a lot of joy watching the game.
The only annoying thing is the anxiety inducing background track. It doesn't reflect the rhythm or the mood of the interview and makes it sound like all of the interview was as pivotal in every minute.
Not having Steffi in the series is a bummer. I suppose she chose not to be part of it, I don't know. But I can understand that she would want to avoid the drama given that the leaders in WTA were not supportive of her at times after the Seles.aftermath.

Stefanie (yes, she prefers to be called that!) has indeed closed the tennis book for most of her life now. She rarely plays in private, does no coaching or TV commentary. She never liked the spotlight much and was quite happy that this part was over when she retired. Also she keeps out of the GOAT discussion, since she was never playing for records or history books, but for joy and for herself to prove she can challenge the others. She once said: „Even if all my records will be broken, it does not take anything away from the great career I had and the joy I felt in THAT moment when I won something great. I have dedicated 25 years of my life to tennis and given everything I can, now my life has changed - and in the end, it‘s still just a game and I have more important things I draw my attention to now, family and children in need“.

Think about her success. She wasn't exceptionally athletic. Kind of stiff and mechanical in her serve. She had neither a strong first or second serve. She wasn't going to do dives or slides or outrun well placed hard shots, and had almost a nonexistent volley game. Who would expect to do anything? She didn't have the greatest stamina or fitness either. Chris Evert was a phenomenon in a serve and volley game with majors played mostly on fast surfaces. It's exactly what she said. She was like a machine out there with well-placed ground strokes. I'll add something though. She could return most of the balls hit to her! She kept the ball in play. Her mechanical stoic nature keeping rallies alive puts her in the top 10 of the greatest female players ever.

I cannot listen to these potentially great interviews with this totally incongruous background music! It's very off-putting and not a formula that works - take EVERY OTHER INTERViEW EVER RECORDED as cases in point!

I know- I keep thinking I have another window open playing music, or maybe my phone is making the noise. These great interviews can stand on their own- axe the distracting music faster than a Chrissy 6-0, 6-0 blowout win at the French, I say!

Astonishing, guess U failed Steffi. But it's only one more prove, U ever hate her. Priceless 😢

Serena is the first black female to be ranked year end number one.....history.....if she is left out I'm sorry this is wrong and nothing more than a white girl only sorority.

@Craig Williams...no disrespect of Ms. Williams. I will never challenge her accomplishments on and off the tennis courts. She truly is a worthy champion and worthy of the interview. I've followed tennis since 1980 . I sadly was never a Serena nor Venus Williams fan, but I won't take away from there accomplishments of this great sport. I will never scandalize there names, just was never a fan of there's

@@5rodan5 You are entitled to your opinion. Like them or not...if this series is about Number one ranked players then our opinion of liking them or not is irrelevant. This series is incomplete without Steffi and Serena.

@Craig Williams: yes, I definitely desire to hear From Steffi Graf, but Steffi rarely does interviews with anyone

Don't like her. She killed her own child because she put tennis before a human life, that could have been a daughter. Later on she left her husband and three boys because of her philandering. She has had more men go through her than cars though the Blackwall tunnel.

bahaha oh please, its funny/sad...yes she certainly had her fair share, even The Presidents son, and some of her big losses at W were as she says becuase she was either in love (78) or Connors came into the players box with a sexy english actress (75) I do hope she is as happy as someone like Evonne Goolagong who won all the same titles (apart from the clay court US open tailor made for EVert by the USTA in Evonnes best chance years) and is the happiest of people...We wish her well with her latest hurdle, which is cancer xxoo
