When I was first approached about editing this CMV for Bace, his only direction in terms of BGM was that it be "JRock and Hype." From BGM to editing process itself, this was probably one of the smoothest projects I've worked on yet. With originally 5+ minutes of combo footage, "The Beginning" was one of only a few songs that had the length to hold all these combos, but ended up working out so well you wouldn't have guessed that, hahaha....
This CMV isn't that heavily edited - I primarily wanted to showcase the fantastic work Bace and Rath left up to me, so contrary to most of my other work I think "Mercurial Blend" was a really great change of pace to work with.

Lyrics (The Beginning / ONE OK ROCK) [Japanese Translations in Brackets]
    Just give me a reason
    To keep my heart beating
Don’t worry it’s safe right here in my arms
As the world falls apart around us
All we can do is hold on, hold on
    Take my hand
    And bring me back
I'll risk everything if it's for you
    A whisper into the night
Telling me it's not my time, and don't give up
    I've never stood up before
[This time however I won't let go of this hand
I clutched what I cannot relinquish]
So stand up, stand up (Just gotta keep on running)
Wake up, wake up (Just tell me how I can)
    Never give up
[That instant of dazzling beauty is almost madding]
    Just tell me why baby
    They might call me crazy
For saying I’d fight until there is no more
[That glint in your eyes which was wrapped in despair is a sensuous impulse]
Blinded, I can’t see the end
    So where do I begin?
Say another word, I can't hear you
    The silence between us
[It's just reflecting as if nothing is there]
I take this chance that I make you mine
[I'm merely pretending like I'm adorned with things I can't hide]
So stand up, stand up (Just gotta keep on running)
Wake up, wake up (Just tell me how I can)
    Never give up
[That dazzling beauty of misery and sorrow]
    Just give me a reason
    To keep my heart beating
Don’t worry it’s safe right here in my arms
[Broken, weeping, blossoming and scattered these feelings]
So blinded I can’t see the end
Look how far we made it
The pain I can’t escape it
[At this rate I can't possibly let this end can I?
However many times I seemed about to drop dead or even fall into ruin
    There's no end]
    So where do I begin?
[If I try not to lose what I have grasped tightly...
If I extend my hand and it seems about to fall
Throw away the inertia of all the days when there was nothing lost
    You...]
    Just tell me why baby
    They might call me crazy
For saying I’d fight until there is no more
[That glint in your eyes which was wrapped in despair is a sensuous impulse]
Blinded, I can’t see the end
Look how far we made it
The pain I can’t escape it
[At this rate I can't possibly let this end can I?
However many times I seemed about to drop dead or even fall into ruin
    There's no end]
    It finally begins..

The only thing I learned from this video is that Japanese music is like ten years behind us.

+NixonDrink There is no "behind" or "advanced" in music why do you think people still appreciate classic music? Plus your opinion reeks of western bias

Brett, what's your advice for starting in terms of CMVs? I've made a few if you wanna check out my channel. I'm, curious what I can do to give them that "Oomph." Outside of getting better at editing, because that I know lol.

Just took a look at your Jack-O CMV, and my initial advice would be: variation! You generally use the same dip to black transition, combo on the same character, on the same stage, facing the same direction. Watch other CMVs and pay attention to how they vary each of these factors.
Also seems like you are not placing your clips with the BGM in mind that much. For example, from 2:05 to 2:19, the music has some drastic shifts, but the video does not really follow suite.

Alright, so, more variation, and be more aware of my BGM of choice and the subtleties of said BGM? I do thank you for the reply, by the by! It does mean quite a bit, I want to be able to make videos on par with yours someday!

Thanks man, I appreciate it and encourage your pursuits, nothing of my work is beyond the scope of anyone else willing to achieve a high level of attention to detail. Making CMVs come down to two basic points, and getting better is just about improving on them:
      1) Having a vision - the best combo videos aim high with specific goals in mind. A strong vision of what you want to make is the best way to make a great video. While this can be hard to do, watching what others have done is a very easy way to get inspired and understand what it means to have a great vision. Sometimes CMVs are made by recording footage first and then building off of what you have. The stronger your ability to build a vision, a theme, a narrative, out of what you've recorded, the better final product you'll create.
      2) Making that vision a reality - Editing, to me, is basically about problem solving. You have an idea and you have material, and your goal is to shape it as best you can. A lot of the time things don't work out. The song is too short. You have too much footage. The combos don't fit the phrase. You want to include certain scenes. My best advice to getting better at editing is to NEVER GIVE UP on solving these problems.
Lastly, better combos make for better CMVs (usually) - don't forget to push yourself as a player as well as an artist.

Thank you so much for the replies. They were most informative, and very kind and honest, which I respect. Is there by chance I can have you "evaluate" some of my future CMVs? It would greatly help me evolve and learn further in my opinion.

Yes, of course! I'm always open to giving people feedback or just offering a 2nd eye. My twitter DMs are open, or TH-cam messages.
