See, while I do understand your interpretation here, of Spike helping Buffy become the Slayer in full, I actually kind of feel like the lyrics work in reverse too - Buffy helping Spike fight against what life as a vampire turned him into and become the good man, the hero, he always was deep down. Like, "Teach me how to fight, I'll show you how to win" works with Spike learning to fight the monster inside him for Buffy's sake and in turn helping her save the day time and again, "Put me to the test, I'll prove that I am strong" fits perfectly with him taking the Demon Trials to get his soul back, and "I question who I am/I'm seeing who I am/I'm sure of who I am" pretty much describes Spike's progression from monster to hero after he falls in love with Buffy (and also his feelings for her, from confused obsessed stalker to devoted loyal knight). Just to name a few examples. So yeah, personally I think of it the other way around, but the song is perfect for them either way. :)
I thought of that before I made this (to look for a male version of the song, if there is one, but went with this angle.) Either one fits the song though, I fully agree. That's part of what makes them so damn beautiful together.
