GKoopa Yeah, fantastic sound design. It's better than the realistic sound effects used in the modern games nowadays. Half the time you can't hear sonic's footsteps because of how loud everything else is in the stage.
This concept for what a 3D sonic platformer could and should be is ingenious. Going fast is a joy. It feels good and isn’t so easily interrupted by silly platforming. Everything is open and spaced so that you can comfortably plan your path and cruise around. Obviously this isn’t perfect, but with proper adjustments and some more direction, this could be one of my all time favorite games.
So this guy has a better understanding what a 3-D sonic game should be like, than the entire sega team? Multiple paths to finish a level, colorful level design, speed, and platforming. That's sonic.
Oblivious to Oblivion Except there is no actual LEVEL. Open areas are cool and all, but Sonic is and always be about getting to the goal as fast as possible. This open level design just isn't what the games are about.
Drek Is KrEk well I don't know much about the game. This is my first time seeing it, but it should have a wide area so you can run, and looks to improve on a linear path with quick time loops from previous 3-D sonic. It looks like many path ways to get the end goal which is what the sonic games originally were. Instead of going forward you would go left to right with branching paths in 2-D, and no sonic wasn't about finishing each level as fast as you could. For me it was finding cool new paths to take and finding loops and other things in the level.
Thomas ThePvZfan I am actually taking a college course on it. But you don't even need a course to realize that this isn't good level design. Open areas are fine, but the level is way too open. Any actual design is lost because of the sheer size of the map. Sonic has always been at least somewhat linear, so this big open design just doesn't work.
Watching this, it makes sense why the majority of 3D Sonic games failed so hard, with high speed you need tge space to appreciate it. Narrow rail courses don't give Sonic that kind of freedom, these huge open areas really let you go as fast as you like with little consequence, and still give the game room to grow as well.
I notice two things right away: 1, as someone else pointed out, the camera angles towards where sonic's going to be moving next, without making you lose sight of him or get messed up about which direction you're pressing, so far as I can tell. 2, the fact that this is so spread out compared with something like Sonic Adventure (or, say, Super Mario 64) is significant to me. You've got a hero who's whole gimmick is running fast, makes sense to give him room to run. What's kind of missing is emotion. When Sonic pushes on something, you can see the effort in his eyes. When Sonic is struck (or falling down a waterfall), you can see his AHHHH OH CRAP face. When he hits a spring, you can see him looking up, to see where he being bounced up to. You can't see Sonic's eyes, so you need to do something else in the way of giving him a personality. Mario 64 accomplishes this by having Charles Martinet's debut as Mario, but NOT making him too vocal about things. Mario has two or three quotes in the whole game which amount to something other than "Yah!" "Wah!" "Whoo-hoo!" "Yee-hee!" and the like. Sonic would need to be similar, probably variations of "Yeah!" "Whoa!" and similarly surfer-talk-y exclamations.
This is far and above the most aesthetically pleasing 3D Sonic fan game. It's so well-animated and it's perfectly appropriate for Sonic. The gameplay also looks pretty tight. I'm actually miffed I can't play this, hah.
You see this actually makes sense in order to accommodate sonic's high speed you NEED wide open spaces. If not then you have to essentially create a "boost" button so that he essentially controls like a car and goes forward in one direction so the player doesn't keep bumping and stopping into shit.....
I know what you mean dude. I mean the adventure games understood this and i think with a game of that formula in gameplay such as heroes or adventure 2 i think SEGA would hit it big in success. It's just that the "fans" of the series have bogged it down with criticisms and memes so much that the company feels like they shouldn't go back and just stick with the boost formula. When fan games like this prove that it's definately possible for SEGA to do such a thing as an open-world or Adventure style gameplay for Sonic
I love this idea so much! This game seems to perfectly capture what made 2D sonic great, and bring it to the third dimension. I love the sense of momentum. Not sure if these things have been changed yet or not, but I have a couple suggestions to make it even better: Make sonic’s model a bit bigger. IMHO he just seems a little small here, which also makes it difficult to really appreciate the character’s appearance. When you run through a loop (the kind where you go upside-down) I think the camera should zoom out a bit and look at the loop externally, rather than following sonic through the loop. This way it’s less jarring and claustrophobic. The player can more easily see whats coming up, control sonic through the loop, and decide what to do after finishing it. I say this because currently when you run a loop, you really can’t tell what’s coming afterward until you finish it. Just a couple minor suggestions. And I hope you guys see this through to completion!
If this game was made in the late 90's people would lose their shit, and Mario 64 would've been left in the dust. Honestly, as a Mario fan I am kinda glad this game didn't come out in the late 90's because it probably would've destroyed Mario 64's revolutionary reputation today.
Yes man,if SEGA has made this on 90's,their story on video games might have been more victorious. And as Mario itself had made, and by this time Sonic would have so many great games than Mario.
This fan game is an amazing concept of what Sega should be doing. Someone hire the creator for this masterpiece and let him be the gaming director and designer for all the Sonic games from now on. I'd love to see this as an official future game 😃

like, sure it's a little rough around the edges, but the gameplay and mechanics look like a solid foundation. The camera distance is perfect for making the level readable while keeping the speed up. Sonic in 3D can work while being faithful. (For the record, I really enjoyed Adventure 1.)
Love the classic sonic look!! Also love how platforming can be completed with speed if done correctly, and doesn't force sonic to slow down. Sure, it might be better to slow down, but it interrupts the sole purpose. Also I like how there aren't boost pads and stuff like that, if you need speed, you have to build it up yourself. I kinda wish there was another option for attack than the homing attack, but it would be difficult to think of something that didn't sacrifice speed. This game looks really freaking cool, and I'm super excited to see where it goes!!!!
I hate how people say this has terrible level design. I mean like this is just a demo and there is no real story for the game. And if there is no story there is no objective or direction for the game. With no story you can feel free do to whatever, whenever you want to because nothing is timing you to do anything, if there is nothing to get to. In a game like this I can really feel like I am "running fast and free." On another though, linearity in sonic games has always been the problem in Sonic games recently like forces. Though I will agree that there should be linearity in some stages, that is to say they are making new ones. But I think green hill should be about exploring Sonic's abilities and what you can do with Sonic and what Sonic is capable of, like it always was and used to be. That's what green hill in this game and the classics always managed to capture in me.
Do people think this has terrible level design? I honestly think it’s pretty brilliant. Maybe just a little too open, but certainly not terrible. FAR from it.
The thing that makes Classic Sonic so great is how it manages to make you feel like you're Sonic. You feel free and peaceful. I think if Sega either just stuck to Classic Sonic, or found a way to make Modern Sonic give you that same feeling again than their games would be awesome again.
SEGA, you put fans to make a 2D Sonic game and it turn out to be one of the best Sonic games ever. Now it's time to put fans to make a 3D Sonic game. We're waiting.
Ultra 2.0 Sonic mania wasn’t made by sonic team. It was made by Christian whitehead, a sonic fan game creator and head cannon who made the sonic 2 hd fangame
If I can remember Christian WhiteHead is one of those examples of being hired by Sega to work on their games since he is a sonic fan, and made fan games in the past. Sonic Mania is amazing. Sometimes fans have more interesting ideas just like Christian did.
Sonikku Yoshi world is literally just unleashed gameplay but only more scripted. souls feels bland and unpolished as hell, both in gameplay and graphics department.
This right here is what we want out of a 3D sonic game. No gameplay gimmicks, no bad character acting, no linear railroading or complicated puzzle platforming. Just a somewhat easily traversible playground to romp around in at high speeds.
love it, the fact that you added the charge speed from sonic cd is another plus, the music is cool(nostalgic but modern),and you have a lot of freedom to move, almost like you were actually there, the monsters are more intimaditing and i bet you will find someone who will want to represent your game in no time,i would wish you good luck but you probably wont need it
Honestly, this is a great demo, but if this ever actually becomes a game, you are gonna need to work on level design. Right now your world feels objectiveless and empty, but that can be easily fixed. Keep up the good work, hope to see more of this in the future
This is great, good job, some notes on it too: -I love how smoothly the camera follows the angle of sonic in those curves it really adds to the experience - I'm impressed by the sheer scale of it, but draw distance doesn't reflect that, however it is obvious it's for performance especially because how lagless it seems - some sense of direction would be nice if these levels are going to have a goal point - some variation on textures/ environment like the canyon would give more personality to the world itself - you could make the sunflowers turn to the camera, that'd make them a tiniest bit less flat - new interactions would be interesting, like using the palm trees to spin and jump Overall this seems like a great game and could become something very special if completed, keep up with the good job
Here for the unavoidable "THIS IS HOW 3D SONIC SHOULD BE" quotes. Surprised I only found 2 along those lines.. Kidding aside, this looks amazing. Keep it up.
I just love the cartoony artstyle, must been a hard work to code everything from scratch, but I think is better than use a existent engine like GDK,mainly because for me,every GDK Sonic fangame looks the same,I'm not saying EVERY fangame looks, but the mayority of them do,and his control looks like Sonic is too heavy, and is a nightmare to move him,and I LOVE Sonic's model,it looks like Xtreme sprites an promotional art, everything looks so polished, and this is just a early beta,I can see a lot of care and love was put into this project,Mr. Lance,Murasaki,GREAT WORK.
This game captures the essence of what Sonic should play like in a 3D space. Sure it has no level structure or is close to being finished, but the core gameplay looks amazing.
The maneuvering is really dang good for 3D. It really does feel like the 2D physics being applied to 3D and this is what the jump between dimensions should've been like all those years ago.
This looks like it would be so much fun as an Odyssey style collectathon, giving you more of a reason to explore the level or allowing mini challenges in each area. If you're just trying to get to the end of each level, that's not really taking full advantage of the open world.
Pokédragon yea but we have to be realistic. Sonic never reached the potential in 3d that games like Mario did. I think this kind of concept that's more of a sandbox style would have worked really well instead of the more on rails style of games like sonic adventure. Just my opinion.
Pokédragon I think Sega will do something like this eventually. Increase the size of the levels and you can increase the speed without feeling like your not in control. Just makes sense and all games seem to be moving into more open worlds. Mario Odessy and Breath of the Wild for example.
I think this works as a sandbox tech demo, but I hope the actual finished game has more direction. This, as it is, seems a bit aimless. Still really petty. Love the art style and it works to show off the engine.
Andrew Cranfill my theory is combine 2d style level (mid high low routes) with multiple paths that lead to separate areas would be perfect. A lot of replay ability
This type of 3d-game fits not only with the classic but with the modern designed Sonic. I hope Sega can see the potential from these guys and start to make games like that for both eras.
my god, this is quite possibly the best sonic game since they went 3d. Physics based motion, that actually carries, a real open world, I.. I actually teared up a tiny bit.
This is a cool approach to Sonic in 3D. An open world with tons of free space for fast gameplay and a lot of branching paths to get to the end. SEGA PLZ HIRE THIS GUY!!!
Absolutely love the way this sounds! Giving the robots their own sound effects as well as having multiple unique squeaks and chirps for the mobius animals that you free from them is such a good touch. If this is just an early build, I can’t wait to see what it’ll be like later down the line.
A group of non-profit fans figured out what a multi-million dollar corporation couldn't after 20 years of trying. How to fucking translate Sonic to 3D.
SrSander there are still a lot of differences between this and the Adventure gameplay (e.g. camera always aligning itself with Sonic on slopes and loops). I think they only look similar because the boost gameplay is so far-removed from both of them.
Seems like it has potential, but it doesn't really feel like there's much of a game in there or any challenge at all. But the openness feels really nice and seems like you could do it a lot with it somehow
Just put Modern Sonic in this engine along with his moveset combined with this Sonic's moveset, have original levels, more characters to play as, an "Unleashed" quality story and you've got a formula for the perfect Modern Sonic game
This looks fantastic. Needs a bit more direction in terms of an objective but aside from that, I'd love to see a classic Sonic game like this! It may seem a bit aimless due to the size of the map but in truth, I think that's what Sonic needs. More wide open areas so it doesn't just feel like you're holding up and pressing one button. You can actually feel like you're accomplishing something and see just how fast Sonic can go.
Despite what some people are saying, I think the wide open spaces really help compensate for sonic's speed and the player's ability to roam! Too often in sonic games I feel the stages are too narrow and linear. This looks like a much more liberating and "open world" take on the sonic formula! I love it!
An issue I have this this, however, is that this goes _way too far_ in the opposite direction ... without actually intending to. It would be one thing if it was actually open world, because it actually does feel like it - I got the feeling that the Green Hill Zone was just one huge playground you to run around with - but it's just the standard "get to the goal" type of deal. A goal that the level does not really point towards in any way, as while there are definitely some sort of hints towards defined paths ( such as the raised ledges that are pretty blatant about ) it doesn't seem like there's any sort of hint toward whether or not you're going down the paths forward or _backwards_. Combined with the fact that practically *every part of the level looks the same*, it seems very easy to get lost in. And not in a good way - the way where you're endlessly treading the same ground with no idea where you're actually supposed to be going. This sort of level designs seems much more suited to more *Knuckles* styled gameplay, honestly. While you'd have to tighten the level still to prevent it from getting frustrating, the fact that you're actually *intended* to check everywhere seems far more fitting, and the'd be no sort of "going backwards." Although, it would still need work on differentiating the areas. Some sort of map would be nice, too.
I don't think a real open world sonic game would be this plain-looking, but imagine if you were able to seamlessly travel through zones as Sonic at these speeds. Sort of something like Sonic's world in Lego Dimensions, except waaaaaaaaay bigger and more open. Seriously, imagine being able to revisit old worlds and locations from the Sonic universe, like Station Square and Ancient ruins, and Never Lake and the Little planet, the crashed Death Egg and Angel Island ALL AT ONCE!! Okay... I'm getting a little carried way with the expanse of this open world, but still just IMAGINE what it would be like to be able to get to travel between those distanced locations but as the fastest thing alive.
That's a good point! Perhaps the design isn't as well suited for a "get to the goal" type of level. Especially with a lack of defined pathways like you mentioned. I guess my point is that the game just looks SUPER fun to run around and explore in haha
I can't believe that this is fan made. Programming software has come a long way. I swear you used to need a studio, and a good amount of money for something like this...
Looks good, but if I may play devil's advocate for a bit: There seems to be lots of wide empty space that really has no purpose other than to run around in, but I'll chalk that up to this being an early demo, so not everything might be in place. I also think that Sonic is too small, all the enemies look gigantic compared to him, and the platforms and ramps seem fairly large too. I think by scaling Sonic up and pulling the camera back, it would solve both of my issues. But I'm am neither a game dev, nor a massive Sonic fan, so what the fuck do I know? Just throwing my two cents in.
This looks amazing and wonderful. If I had any complaints though, it's that sonic needs to be larger to compensate for everything being so much bigger than him.
@@Alvosploio I see what you mean, though. I think that could work out pretty well. The level design would probably need to be a tad more streamlined, though. And a few more moves tailored to Sonic's movements to give him more versatility.
Somehow this, Sonic Freedom and Streets of Rage Remake needs to be released officially. Sonic Mania already brought back a lot of hope, Sega can keep the ball rolling with games like this
The core gameplay of this seems much more smooth and free than the congested nature of the newer game's takes on 'Modern Sonic'. I would love for this to be a full fledged 3d platformer with collectibles and all, this just seems so fun to traverse.
Nonsensical Sanic Obviously. What do you expect of 2 devs compared to a whole company? They made this from scratch and yes, its slower but thats not necessarily a bad thing. On a larger scale with segas backing, this could be amazing.
I've updated the video description to point to proper download links for those of you who want to try this game for yourself.

My favorite thing about this demo has to be the sound effects. Everything sounds extremely satisfying. That running noise!

I also love how the use the OVA Spinning sound effect.
GKoopa Yeah, fantastic sound design. It's better than the realistic sound effects used in the modern games nowadays. Half the time you can't hear sonic's footsteps because of how loud everything else is in the stage.

If I can remember Christian WhiteHead is one of those examples of being hired by Sega to work on their games since he is a sonic fan, and made fan games in the past. Sonic Mania is amazing. Sometimes fans have more interesting ideas just like Christian did.
That is such a relaxing remix of Green Hill Zone.
You took Sonic's speed and turned it into pure momentum. I love it.
Fans are making better games than Sega themselves. Insane, great job whoever made this
This actually looks fun
this is probably the only 3D sonic fan game i've seen that is doing it right
Green hill paradise was good but this was so perfect i wish my pc was good enough to play it at above 5 fps
Majora Ffs, Are you ok? Umm Hello??? Sonic world and Sonic Souls???
Sonic world is overrated and souls is just boring after the first playthrough
Sonikku Yoshi world is literally just unleashed gameplay but only more scripted. souls feels bland and unpolished as hell, both in gameplay and graphics department.
Majora Idc if you don't like world, but I think you have the wrong game. World is adventure game play material.
This right here is what we want out of a 3D sonic game. No gameplay gimmicks, no bad character acting, no linear railroading or complicated puzzle platforming. Just a somewhat easily traversible playground to romp around in at high speeds.
I am *LOVING* that super peel out sfx
Can Sonic Fan game creators become the lead of SONIC TEAM, please, along with the Mania team.
love it, the fact that you added the charge speed from sonic cd is another plus, the music is cool(nostalgic but modern),and you have a lot of freedom to move, almost like you were actually there, the monsters are more intimaditing and i bet you will find someone who will want to represent your game in no time,i would wish you good luck but you probably wont need it
Honestly, this is a great demo, but if this ever actually becomes a game, you are gonna need to work on level design. Right now your world feels objectiveless and empty, but that can be easily fixed. Keep up the good work, hope to see more of this in the future
This is how a 3D sonic game should be
This gives me Nostalgic to the beginning of 2018
This is great, good job, some notes on it too:
-I love how smoothly the camera follows the angle of sonic in those curves it really adds to the experience
- I'm impressed by the sheer scale of it, but draw distance doesn't reflect that, however it is obvious it's for performance especially because how lagless it seems
- some sense of direction would be nice if these levels are going to have a goal point
- some variation on textures/ environment like the canyon would give more personality to the world itself
- you could make the sunflowers turn to the camera, that'd make them a tiniest bit less flat
- new interactions would be interesting, like using the palm trees to spin and jump
Overall this seems like a great game and could become something very special if completed, keep up with the good job
Here for the unavoidable "THIS IS HOW 3D SONIC SHOULD BE" quotes. Surprised I only found 2 along those lines..
Kidding aside, this looks amazing. Keep it up.
This clear style is awesome. Imagine the levels you could create. It's perfect for speed runs
There's more love and polish put into this than I've seen in some official Sonic games. I really hope SEGA continues to hire experienced fans.
Lance,Murasaki,GREAT WORK.
when sonic fans can make better sonic games than people getting paid to make sonic games
This legitimately looks better than most of the games Sega has currently been releasing...
Why are all the enemies approximately 2.5x Sonic's height?
This looks kind of cool, actually.
FieryExplosion I'm assuming it's so they're easier to jump into/target/see.
yjk
The Sonic Experience I've wanted for years...
This looks like it would be so much fun as an Odyssey style collectathon, giving you more of a reason to explore the level or allowing mini challenges in each area. If you're just trying to get to the end of each level, that's not really taking full advantage of the open world.
A minimap would be useful.
maybe it will be programmed later
The world of sonic 1, from sonic's eyes
Sonic could be a little bigger, but this was pretty awesome.
Just makes so much sense to have a more open world for a sonic game. Why didn't Sega try this in all the failed 3d games they made?
Pokédragon yea but we have to be realistic. Sonic never reached the potential in 3d that games like Mario did. I think this kind of concept that's more of a sandbox style would have worked really well instead of the more on rails style of games like sonic adventure. Just my opinion.
Pokédragon I think Sega will do something like this eventually. Increase the size of the levels and you can increase the speed without feeling like your not in control. Just makes sense and all games seem to be moving into more open worlds. Mario Odessy and Breath of the Wild for example.
This looks like it has a lot of potential
I think this works as a sandbox tech demo, but I hope the actual finished game has more direction. This, as it is, seems a bit aimless.
Still really petty. Love the art style and it works to show off the engine.
Andrew Cranfill my theory is combine 2d style level (mid high low routes) with multiple paths that lead to separate areas would be perfect. A lot of replay ability
This type of 3d-game fits not only with the classic but with the modern designed Sonic.
I hope Sega can see the potential from these guys and start to make games like that for both eras.
I hope Sonic team makes a game like this in the future
Sonic Fans do what Sonic Teamn't
That's scary bro
A free-roam game like this is what was needed. This might possibly bring back sonic if you can re-implement the feeling and add a bunch of new things.
such great ideas i see in this game. conveys great sense of speed which is what you need most in a sonic game. bravo
The game sounds and looks so peaceful
I can't even describe in words how amazing/beautiful that was.
my god, this is quite possibly the best sonic game since they went 3d.
Thank you recommendation
*Thank you.*
absolutely brilliant, THIS is what modern Sonic games need, FREEDOM TO RUN.
are you still working on this?
Naiko it's being made into a full game. The developers have a forum on SFGHQ: www.sonicfangameshq.com/forums/threads/sonic-utopia.111/
*Cough* Sonic Adventure 2 *Cough*
Sonic Mania Bad example, SA2 was bad too.
SrSander there are still a lot of differences between this and the Adventure gameplay (e.g. camera always aligning itself with Sonic on slopes and loops). I think they only look similar because the boost gameplay is so far-removed from both of them.
BDNeon Sonic stages weren't bad though just everything else
SA1, SA2, Sonic Heroes, Shadow The Hedgehog, Sonic Unleashed.
Sega....Y u no hire these people?
They hire, Sonic Mania was made by a fan ;D
Seems like it has potential, but it doesn't really feel like there's much of a game in there or any challenge at all. But the openness feels really nice and seems like you could do it a lot with it somehow
kyro youie It’s not really a game, just a proof of concept that shows how Sonic could work in 3D.
That is how you do a full 3D Sonic game right! Plenty of room to run.
Just put Modern Sonic in this engine along with his moveset combined with this Sonic's moveset, have original levels, more characters to play as, an "Unleashed" quality story and you've got a formula for the perfect Modern Sonic game
The thought of an open-world sonic game is actually pretty cool
This looks like the sonic game we were looking for when MARIO 64 came out. Took you long enough.
Sonic fans do what sega dont
Cher Schroeder true
Funky! Looks like a lot of work has been put into this. I can't wait to see it once more progress is made
Jesus this could have rivaled Mario 64 back in the day! What genius made this and how can we go back in time to make this Sonics first 3d game?!
thus demo has much more of a sonic feel than the last few games combined.
10/10 would play! The way sonic should be... based on speed.. and nice graphics too! Feels really cohesive. Kudos to the creator.
Based on momentum* since if u just base it on speed you get Sonic Generations (not a bad thing, but not really classic sonic)
thanks for the correction! :-)
np!
This looks like an actual official game it's that good
I can't believe that this is fan made. Programming software has come a long way. I swear you used to need a studio, and a good amount of money for something like this...
this is so much better than anything Sega has made in the last 20 years
Keaton Sullivan SA2?
Sega needs to use this as a base to make a full game. It's a really great concept that with a little professional polish could be an amazing game.
when a unfinished fan project looks better then recent sonic games
come on sega, step it up
Sega, are you watching this?
Wow, Green Leaf Zone looks huge and the music is wonderful!
GlaiveHolderBreaker400 leaf?
Looks good, but if I may play devil's advocate for a bit: There seems to be lots of wide empty space that really has no purpose other than to run around in, but I'll chalk that up to this being an early demo, so not everything might be in place. I also think that Sonic is too small, all the enemies look gigantic compared to him, and the platforms and ramps seem fairly large too. I think by scaling Sonic up and pulling the camera back, it would solve both of my issues. But I'm am neither a game dev, nor a massive Sonic fan, so what the fuck do I know? Just throwing my two cents in.
THIS is what a sonic game should feel like in 3D, Sega take notes...
This looks amazing and wonderful. If I had any complaints though, it's that sonic needs to be larger to compensate for everything being so much bigger than him.
Sonic Forces me to play this
*Thank you*
Ha! Good one man 😂
This demo actually makes me wish Sonic had a 3d collectathon game in the style of classic sonic.
Sonic 3D Blast?
I see you got jokes.
@@Alvosploio
I see what you mean, though. I think that could work out pretty well. The level design would probably need to be a tad more streamlined, though. And a few more moves tailored to Sonic's movements to give him more versatility.
Wait, levels like flying battery, death egg and other great levels would be amazing in 3D!
This looks exactly like what I want out of a sonic game.
Sega: makes sonic forces
This feels like sonic.
Scenic Seems slower with shittier level design too.
Nonsensical Sanic Obviously. What do you expect of 2 devs compared to a whole company? They made this from scratch and yes, its slower but thats not necessarily a bad thing. On a larger scale with segas backing, this could be amazing.
Scenic
That's what the dev team are aiming to do.
