I do not understand the logic behind banning songs. Historical songs are an wonderful way to teach history. Die Fahne Hoch (with lyrics!) is a great way to illustrate that era and learn about it. It is about learning, not about supporting nazism. There are a lot of other songs reminding of other historical time, not banned. Is studying history a crime?!

Does anyone know the composer of the melody. Horst Wessel is only credited as writing the lyrics. The melody apparently is much older? Where did it come from?
The melody comes from 19th. century and it was used for folk songs before.
Ah thats a very good question. You can hear echoes of the melody in Beethoven and there was apparently a song sung by sailors and a hymn from the Salvation Army that sounded like it. Im Gruenen Wald resembles bars and some even detect the cadence in the hymn How Great Thou Art which was popular at Billy Graham rallies .The melody is uncomfortably seductive and possibly why Goebbels did much to keep it in the minds of people singing it once Horst Wessel was buried almost as martyr. Goebbels called him the National Socialist Christ.
