Growing up as a massive Doctor Who fan I was always obsessed with the confidential episodes which inspired me to want to get involved in media production, so I was thrilled when I was bought the box sets in 2009 and there was a bonus disc with all the episodes on. 12 years later I’m buying the blue ray box sets and finding the confidentials again was such a nice feeling.

I literally decided to go into prop making and special effects for film because I spent a large portion of my childhood obsessing over the Star Wars bonus discs. They were proof that films don't just appear out of nowhere, and that it takes thousands of people to make them and made me feel like I could be one of those people

I have such a fondness for dvd extras. Growing up with harry potter, Pixar movies, and disney movies, I found it amazing finding all kinds of special features whether games, behind the scenes, or hidden clips. I remember a harry potter sorcerer's stone game where once you beat all the challenges and made it to the mirror of erised, you unlocked the deleted scenes. This blew my mind as a kid finding out there was other scenes in the movie that I have never seen before.
I do miss how most movie releases now have very minimal bonus features however there are some standouts. Still today any Lucasfilm releases is still jam packed with bonus features. Also the classic doctor who blu ray sets. Those have hours of both new and old content which is fascinating that new information can come out about a story from 50 years ago. I do hope with streaming services they do add more special features. I think disney plus probably does it the best but thats mostly only for new releases.
I thought this video was very well done, great job Joe! Can't wait to see what you do next.

I’d put the blade runner documentary up there with the prequels one. Goes through every step of the process. Companies hardly put the effort into the behind the scenes anymore. One of the most disheartening things recently was rewatching Robert Eggers The Witch on blu ray and after watching trying to find behind the scenes or any extras but it was bare, only the movie was on the blu ray. Every company should aspire to that SW Prequels and Blade runner level of detail in their bts

There is a movie I watched years ago with my mum, "3 Zimmer, Küche, Bad" (3Bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom), a lovely german film about family, life, moving around, just everything really. It's glorious. And we always watched the extras after the movie, and there was a poetry thing, that we clicked on. It was a forty (!) minutes poem, read by the actors on scene, about the scenes, on a meta level. So the actors did their jobs, you know, acting for the movie, and then sat down, still in costume, to read a poem that was ridiculous and funny and eye opening sometimes. For a DVD extra.
The more I think about it, the more I want to rewatch that movie and the poem. It might be my favourite thing about a movie.

I don't know how reflective of the whole this is, but I've been disappointed in recent years that DVD extras no longer seem to come as standard, instead being bonuses in special editions and the like. Most of my Star Wars and Harry Potter DVDs are the bog standard versions and have a good helping of extras so I was disappointed when I bought my Force Awakens and Last Jedi DVDs to find that the extras were only on Blu-ray (I assume the same is true for the Rise of Skywalker DVD but don't know because it's still in mint, sealed, unwatched condition...) It isn't a major issue by any means but a shame nonetheless.

Although I like the Dr Who stuff and Star Wars (and yes I know you still talked about Star Wars quite a bit), i love to see you branching out in terms of subject. You fit so much into your short videos, well paced, well edited, well considered, humorous, inciteful and energetic. At the same time as having consistency to your presentations you also keep building on them.
I love physical media but also miss the number that have special features. Although I watch all the special features I probably spend more time with the commentaries. I can watch movies multiple times and if it has a commentary I'm sure that I've watched most more times with the commentary than without. It's interesting hearing commentaries on production and I also love the energy from the actors with all the funny stories. I've recently found a few good commentaries from TH-camrs for movies that I have on DVD and it really brings them to life, they take movies seriously and have a lot of their own knowledge but at the same time can still have fun. Though I can appreciate well done CGI, it will never be as interesting as seeing the work and hearing the stories about physical models and miniatures. Seeing how older movies did things practically and indie movies found some creative solutions to make some great special effects on a tiny budget. Dog Soldiers actors commentary has been my favourite commentary.
An idea for longer projects could be to compare remakes to originals, how they approached certain issues from from a different technical and cultural perspective. Though technically a sequel you could view Force Awakens as a remake of A New Hope because of the parallels that they have. Same with the two Tron movies, they have such a similar structure and pace.
Great work from you Joe. I really look forward to your videos.

While I do wish Disney Gallery had kept up with doing multiple episodes instead of one hour long special I think they changed it because Star Wars has done the same thing as Marvel. Since Star Wars has made nothing but series they drop a Disney Gallery for every Star Wars show after it's finished airing and Marvel Studios Assembled has been making an hour long special for everything since Wandavision, not just the shows. When the one for Doctor Strange in Multiverse of Madness came out it was hosted by Bruce Campbell which was perfection. I've watched the commentary for Endgame multiple times because it's so interesting. I love behind the scene stuff and I'm so glad Disney at least is doing something. Even apart from that they just released that multi part special on Industrial Light and Magic which was really good. I can't believe it'd be that difficult to get this going on other streaming services. Maybe they can't on Netflix because of licencing when it comes to all the content they don't make themselves but with so many studios launching their own streaming services you'd think they'd be able to do it. I'd really like some making of on Paramount+ for all the Star Trek shows. That'd be nice.

I guess Jim Henson was even more of a visionary. I remember the DVD copy of Labyrinth had a making of featurette that was filmed waay back in the 80s. Also wanted to note that Walmart's digital movie store, VUDU, tends to have the bonus features when you buy the movie. At least, that has been the case with The Last Jedi, Knives Out, and the Kung-fu Panda movies.

I think its also worth bringing up how Doctor Who used to handle it with Confidential. Liked that episode? Well turn over to BBC Three to watch Doctor Who Confidential, an episode-length mini documentary about the making of that exact episode you just watched. It was one of my favourite shows to watch as a kid, and its such a shame that nowadays that its been replaced with just short videos put onto TH-cam, usually only focusing on interviews with the cast and writer about a specific monster or something, not a deep dive on the actual making of the episode.
I doubt that they can justify replicating what confidential did today, but I say they should do something similar to what GoT did: after each episode releasing 10 minute "Inside the Episode" videos that were specifically interviews with the writers and the story, and along side 15-20 minutes (occasionally even a 40 minute long) "Game Revealed" videos that were specifically about the production of the episode and interviews with the cast and crew. All uploaded onto TH-cam for free. The behind the scenes production videos (especially ones for an episode with a huge set piece) were always something I got excited for, even when they became more interesting than the episode itself.
