This was the last session of our Koenig & Bauer LIVE Event. And we finish it with something special - of course: Watch the Market launch of the Rapida 106 X - the next generation sheetfed offset press for commercial printing.
After that we jump to Koenig & Bauer Workflow-Solutions for commercial printing with Chris Waschke, Product Manager Complete Workflow Solutions.
The preparation is done so we can now launch the next generation sheetfed offset press: the Rapida 106 X . With a walk through of the press with Dirk Winkler, Director of Technology, Product Management and Product Marketing and Sascha Fischer, Head of Product Management Sheetfed.

Very interesting stuff. I'm very impressed..I've been inprinting for 23yrs.
From one job to the next can be very unpredictable to start. Press Checks you can be spot on matching color... but they who are there for the press check will still run you around at times in a circle because of their lack of experience. This press looks pretty legit when fully maintained. But over time many presses are too busy to be maintained. All this technology also puts pressure on both the Operator and the assistant being a Feeder or a 2nd Pressman. Then you factor in the downtime and a record of time sharing your down time. Seems great for a owner who spent the money for this Printing Press to give coaching. But seems like a lot of unwanted stress for the operator when senior leadership is sharing about down time between jobs etc.

Man these machine just keeps getting sophisticated and autonomous. Just as i thought auto plate changing is advance enough, KBA go next level by making all 8 plate completely human inteference free.
Just wondered if the machine already has plate cleaning system along side blanket washing system.
Meaning that the machine already clean the plate after printing job is done. When you operate 8 colours machine, it is important the machine does all the work. Imagine having to manually clean all 8 blanket and plate. Pretty sure you get exhausted by that alone
Thanks Brian ;) Yep, times are definitely changing fast in the printing industry! Soon enough the machine will run all by itself...
Plate cleaning systems were offered some years ago when unchanged repeat jobs were still common. However, in this highly dynamic and ever changing world of today the plates are hardly ever re-used, because of the short run lengths as such, changing versions or actualized content...
So once the job is printed, the plates are usually thrown away and not cleaned, gummed and stored anymore.

9:20 Can someone explain why it has 8 print stations? Can you get all desired colors with just CMYK inks? Or are the others for solid colors, not halftone?
Hi Poly, Its a 4 colour perfector machine, which means it prints CMYK side one, turns the sheet over and prints CMYK on the other side, hence 8 units ;)

This move for removing bending plate bifore print is gold. In company thet i work kba/8 perfecting 106 2018 model we have avrage 40 job cange in 24h for munth. May max in 8h shift was 57 job cange 800sheet job,plust 3 format change in 8h. Sps is perfet. 2year old mashine 69mil prints. Feder is perfect whit SIS sistem.

Different inks and paper-substrate surfaces print differently. One person buying a print job and looking at a PDF may see the color differently than a PDF vs. actual sheet. So the communication link between printing press people-sales people-print company management may require a customer be present at the time of printing. About 65% of customers, even after having had OK'd the PDF, still are not able to judge a fresh printed press sheet under 5000K lighting in quick time. These customers also need a printing sales representative at hand to assist monitor the sheet and communicate with the customer as to the fine points of the printed sheet. There is product merchandise match required that demands agreement through communication with the customer. Your PDF OK with customer at a distance from the actual printed sheet leaves out this critical step in printing that has been in the process for the last 40 years. What can be done to solidify the link?
Hey Vincent, You are absolutely right that different inks and paper-substrate surfaces print differently wherefore color perception can differ between the print buyer and press operator or sales rep of the printing company. In order to keep this deviation as small as possible, it is important the printing press is working towards a certain print standard and is certified accordingly. Inline in the press our QualiTronic ColorControl looks at every printed sheet for its match to the ink profile given by prepress or the set profile of the approved OK sheet. This match can be also remotely reported by/to respective color or brand management software.
When we talk about PDF comparison we talk about our unique inline inspection system whereby the initial printed sheets of a job are compared to the original customer PDF with regards to content deviations. Irrespective of color, once the initial sheet is approved with regard to the original PDF, all subsequent sheets are checked against this master sheet. In case there is a deviation detected, its position on the sheet is shown along with an image of how it should look like. Depending on set quality levels or operator's decision, the deviation is accepted or rejected. In any case all deviations are stored with PileView giving you the possibility to check and report any deviations accordingly.
In conclusion on every sheet we measure and control color with our QualiTronic ColorControl, register with our QualiTronic ICR (inline camera register) and content via our PDFCheck in order to support the operator as much as possible at printing speed up 20.000 S/h.
All measurements taken are compiled and lead to corresponding quality reports that can be stored or directly communicated to the end customer.

Yes, your technology goes very far to insure consistent print and quality and that is good. One Chicago printer I worked for who had 8/C Komori switched to Heidelberg 13 units with pre-coater, 8 color units, spot foil + additional Anilox units; another printer had the M-Roland 700. My first observation of superlative consistency was the M-Roland 700 6 unit on a 50,000 sheet run of #2 coated text stock. At that time I could not believe that press crew (I'm trying to be nice) was printing to such a high standard. Your brand is 4 or 5 steps beyond a M-R700 capability. I must say your 3 person team for the inhouse 8 day demo with the 106 was rather charming with that mix of personalities.
