I was looking for info on how to test the battery on a Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 the wife bought at a yard sale for $40 several years ago that sat long enough now that it doesn't recognize or charge the battery. I was not planning on upgrading it, but will save your excellent video in case I ever do. Looks like I probably need a new battery, then to try to turn this little puppy into a diagnostic device for my 04 Mini Cooper S. Thanks for the video. Update: I did buy a new battery but the slow HDD and 1GB memory was too limited to use it as a diagnostic tool so I bought a scanner for that purpose and came back to the video today to install a 250 GB SSD in this little net book. I'm hoping the SSD makes it not so agonizingly slow and maybe useful again. The video made the swap easy.
A Really BIG thanks for this video! This video helped me to dismantle an Archos 10 netbook, with no instructions online whatsoever on how to replace a damaged hard disk.
Excellent video -- loved the speedup on the unscrewing/screwing, as well as the simple explanations. Letting us know about the sounds was extraordinarily helpful, as well! Thank you, thank you!
Thanks man - just installed 2GB into a Mini 1012 - it actually makes hell of a difference making it more snappy. Now just have to wait for the replacement screen to arrive (current one has bad crack)
Thank you sooo much I was about to go crazy trying to figure out how to upgrade my mini. You've probably heard this a hundred times but your AWSOME!!!!!
thank you very much for the video. i just upgraded my ram from 1 gig to 2 gig. thanks a lot. really appreciate your time in doing this video. keep up the good work.
Thanks so much for this awesome video, Hubby refuses to do it for me so I needed all the help I can get and I feel confident I can DO this for my new 1012 thanks to your helpful guide. Keep up the great work jrinco11!
2020, I came across a few of these notebooks. I think your video was very well done! Good job! Very helpful to get down to that motherboard level. I need to get to the underside to replace the RTC/CMOS battery (inconvenient place for Dell to put it). I've upgraded the memory, I had to load Windows 7 Home Premium but it registered it using the Win 7 Starter Key on the bottom.. No problem. I lost office 2010 Basic but I just put a clone on it. I have a battery, a "For Dell" charger, RTC/CMOS 2032 L-ION BATTERY, 500 GB 2.5" HD all on order. I like this little portable guy.. The free IOBIT Driver Booster does a perfect job getting all of the drivers updated. The Realtek Media Manager would crash so I rolled it back to the driver from the Dell website.. Works great. The Any Drive Cloning device from eBay does a great job of taking it all to a bigger HD.
Thanks guys for this great video! This laptop surely is more complicated than asus 1000H but with your tutorial it was easy to upgrade this dell ! Thanks a lot
dude you are awesome. thanks a lot for this video ! To be honest, when you put the keyboard back in, it seemed like a cake walk for you. I had a hard time putting mines back in. Great video though man. Cheers !
Great job. Where is the fan - underneath? I'm not even sure the fan is running on mine. It builds up quite a bit of heat by the processors. The system reports it maxes out at 78C, which should be ok I think. But this is the first machine that I'm not sure I'm hearing the fan running. Not a lot of ventilation either.
Thanks for the vid. I just bought one of these and was wondering how to upgrade the memory! It runs great with 1Gb but id like having the extra Gb any ways.
Hi jrinco11-Happy new year to you & yours! Question.I have my dell mini halfway taken apart looking for the cmos battery & I don't see it.Do you have any clue where it might be & if it looks like a watch battery?I've been looking for video's & pics & about the battery & I haven't found anything. It's like they don't want us to know where it is.(probably)unless I'm missing a site somewhere.Would you happen to know? Thanks!
@SmokinMo11 if I remember right, the 1012 just came out this year, and since it comes with a 1 year warranty, you should be able to just send it in for repair (at no cost), no?
Do you know how to remove the video adapter that goes from the screen to the motherboard? i'm working on a Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 and can't seem to get the video to work again, it works on an external monitor and the screen works on another laptop. So I believe its the video cable, just cant get the cable off to check that problem.
Ok, i figured out how to do this but i was wondering can i have 2 memory sticks, one 4GB and one 2GB or are you just able to have one memory stick in slot, i have the Dell 1110? Please help.
i have the same model of netbook and when it works a while it gets unusual hot.I have installed freeware app that measure system temperature and it shows the core temp 64 to 66 celzius ,while the HD goes around 49 Celzius.First of all are those normal temperatures and second ,what should cause this overheat ?
Can you show how to replace the power port? Im pretty sure mines not working right but i can't figure out how to pull it out. In scared of jabbing the board
I upgraded memory and turned on power and screen is black. What might I have done wrong? I checked the connection cord for the keyboard and also made sure the memory stick was secure. What else could it be?
sometimes my dell mini 1012 makes me so mad i just wanna dismantle it the easy way... (Against the wall) LOL Thanks for the video. I think i'll upgrade my memory now. :P
Can the hard drive for this netbook be switch out for an SSD? Solid State Drive, Also can you provide me some information on upgrades that I can do to my Dell Inspiron Mini iM1012-26990BK - I notice the wifi card is not so good either, Is there a part (new wifi insert that I can upgrade to?
I just got done talking to a Dell Tech and they told me that this can't be done. Why do they always have people that don't know about computers as tech support? He tried telling me that the mobo can't handle 2gb.
Actually, many people think mac memory is small, so they think all small memory is mac memroy, actually what they are calling mac memory is simply mobile memory, and yes, many types of mac memory work in pc's, mac's ARE pc's, only more expensive.
im waiting on someone to bring this model to me as im buying from someone on cl...i returned my lenovo ideapad z565 so can get something i can use on daily baisis without having to charge after 2-4 hrs...for my needs this comes in handy and i can connect to my flat if want to play a movie or something..only thing i dont like tho is only one ram slot but i guess i can do search for a 2gb ddr2 stick..got a 500gb hdd ready for me to replace the small one with hehe :D
@cquinterox2 wtf? a nine year old kid did this on his own. Lol ok ok hes a bit above average but holy man all he did was remove the battery then the keyboard and then opened the memory slot. Im pretty sure the netbook was made like that to be easy to upgrade,
$219 refurb with free shipping ordered from Dell just now thanks to you showing me how easy it was to pull the hard drive!
PC Repairman here, thanks for quick easy guide. Much appreciated. I find youtube is a better source than than the manual most of the time.

Hi. How much RAM does the 1012 support?
Thanks just saved me a BIG headache !!
I see you're correct. Wow. Never expected that, especially with such small vents.
You helped me fix a loose harddrive, thanks!
@garnelson the max that it can handle is 2gig and it only has one slot anyways
@SmokinMo11 if I remember right, the 1012 just came out this year, and since it comes with a 1 year warranty, you should be able to just send it in for repair (at no cost), no?

Do you know how to remove the video adapter that goes from the screen to the motherboard? i'm working on a Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 and can't seem to get the video to work again, it works on an external monitor and the screen works on another laptop. Hard as Dell instead of saying Easy As Dell. I have to take mine to a technician too much work and possibly it might break on me.
Mine is beeping
