I just upraded our Mini10 to 2GB and by using this video it was absolutely foolproof. Within less than 35 minutes I was ready to go.Thanks very much for producing this video!
I'm sure you hear this alot.Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I was going insane upgrading the memory on my 1018. Dell manual stated to just pull the palm rest up with you fingers! Impossible! Your credit card tricked saved my sanity. Thanks again.
Thanks for this, just bought my daughter one of these for christmas and was thinking of upgrading the Ram to 2GB. this will make the whole process much, much easier. Excellent Video.
@MCdrivein No, usually if you can disassemble a laptop without having to go through one of the "warranty void if tampered" stickers that covers a screw, you are ok.
@sn0uzer i'd retrace the steps, make sure everything is plugged back in firmly. did u make any mistakes (even small) ? make sure the memory snapped in to place by pushing down.
great vid i been trying to upgrade my laptop memory but i couldn't opened but now i have a question how much of improvement can changing the ram card do? and if there is a way to improve the processing unit to make it faster?
if you're referring to articles such as wikipedia on the dell mini model names, you're correct - however, back when they were actively being sold, most were referenced as the Mini 10v
Excellent video, just finished upgrading my 1018 with crucial 2g module. Invaluable for showing the right way to release those pesky ribbon connectors. PS It still works!
Thank you for not boring us while you took the screws out as many do. Your fast forward was a welcome refreshing part that many hillbillies think we need to watch while they speak real slow in their IQ 80 native tongue.
on many things yes, you will notice faster loading, and less momentary freeze up moments. For a tiny netbook like this, 2gb is perfect so that limitation is not that big of a deal. I only use mine for web browsing, and the 2gb of ram with chrome works great and is not noticeably faster than a real laptop for that task. Without upgrading to 2gb, chrome may have issues with video playback, like frame drops every 15-30 seconds due to swapping, but with 2gb, video playback is smooth.
i have two quick questions. i currently have two gigs of ram in my 1018(thanks to this video i was able to install it easy) but how much of a performance boost would i get if i decided to put a 4 gig stick in. i heard from a few sources that based on the system it's self that there wouldn't be much or any noticeable difference in performance, is that true? i heard from another source that it may be a good idea to put windows xp or Linux on the netbook because it is less taxing to the system.
where is the disply fuse? I have changed the screen and the cable. the fuse is all that is left. My dell 1018 works on an external monitor. but when I turn the laptop on itself it is a very dark display.
Do you think it would be possible to make a 1012/1018 hybrid, since they are so similar? I hate the 1012 touch pad. It is terrible for two fingers, but the 1018 touch pad is great. Plus, I have the broadcom chip on my 1012, which isn't in the 1018. Most of the hardware is interchangeable, and the cutouts all match up, with the exception of the RAM chip door.
Dell does not have any official drivers for the 1080 and windows xp (though, you should be able to use the ones for earlier models such as the 1012). Also, this netbook can only support up to 2GB max (it's a physical limitation of the chipset).
Thanks for the info. My 1018 has been sitting because it’s still slow with the 2gb upgrade. Was about to add more RAM until I read your comment about the chipset limits. Just gonna upgrade to SSD and see if that helps. Thanks.
Does anyone know where the location of the right speaker would be? unfortunetly I have to replace mine, as it was blown out by the previous owner. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
I have this laptop with 1 GB RAM if i will replace the ram to 2 GB will i see a big different at the speed of the laptop what else can i do to improve the performence
THANKS FOR THE VID SIR! i cant believe dell made it even more annoying to get to the RAM. this has to be the worst access to RAM design I have ever seen and I have replaced/upgraded 1000's of laptops and desktops. unbelievable.
what what a pita! i got mine upgraded, but with some difficulty. if you're gonna attempt this, make sure your machine is shutdown and not just in hibernate. also, be extra careful @ 1:05; i broke the clip, and had to crazy glue it. i also stabbed the motherboard, but luckily it was ok. i got fat fingers, so the process was tricky.
Great job, helped me alot! Got SSD and 2gb now. Total silence ;) Well, the plastic in front of the touchpad is kind of squicky. Opened it again, no clips are broken. Any tips? Perhaps heating the plastic a bit will help.
@PhantomTD A bit of very light (So you can open it again) glue on the corner where it squikes, and then just a tiny drop of WD40 in the "gap" and it is all gone, and easy to open again. :-)
Excellent video, very well explained. However, it made me realize that I personally am probably better off living with 1GB of memory than attempting an upgrade. :(
Are you sure it only supports 2GB of RAM? I checked in Linux and it says Handle 0x0012, DMI type 16, 15 bytes Physical Memory Array Location: System Board Or Motherboard Use: System Memory Error Correction Type: None Maximum Capacity: 8 GB Number Of Devices: 1 There's a "Maximum capacity" entry there. Also, in the video you're saying something about an "accelerator card". Is there a way to improve the graphics features of the laptop? Can I add a graphics accelerator to it?
OK, I said scew it, and followed your demo while my 2 yr old watched Wonder Pets. Success! I think. Some how I'm 1 screw short at reasembly time...... I still regret buying a dell cuz this was a pain but I hope this extra ram was worth it. Doesn't look like it. Shoot.
I'm straight man but... I love you ! I did it step by step like you're saying on your video. I replaced my ram with a 2GB Samsung which it says:"2GB 1Rx8 PC3-10600S-09-11-B2" M471B5773DH0-CH9 1105 Hope this help for others
Oh man, sorry to hear that!! After I watched this video I called my local computer store and they will do it for me for $45. Some may think that's a lot but at least they will do it right.. and if they f** it up, they are responsible!!! I just wonder why Dell makes it so damn difficult to do...
holy crap!!!! why does it have to be so complicated???? How much should I expect to pay to have someone do this for me... I'm way scared to do this to my computer.
Super job - easy to follow. 2GB and SSD - This little Dell is now Tiny but Mighty!
I just upraded our Mini10 to 2GB and by using this video it was absolutely foolproof. Within less than 35 minutes I was ready to go.Thanks very much for producing this video!
Second time was the charm for me.. first time two beeps on power up: no ram detected. Very good tutorial. Been meaning to do this for a while.
I upgraded the RAM on my wife's mini 10 from 1 to 2GB using this video and it went great, the process was exactly as described. Thanks for posting!

13 years later, I am still fixing these computers lol

I don't think I'll ever take mine apart but you did an excellent job on yours! Great video!
Thanks, just installed an SSD and a 2gb stick, runs like a champ
Excellent work! Every step is explained clearly and photographed just as clearly. Well done sir!!
Great clear easy to follow instructions. Upgraded my RAM in about 10 minutes, thanks.
Perfect. I used this to upgrade memory in my 1018. Your expert video made it a matter of
@MCdrivein No, usually if you can disassemble a laptop without having to go through one of the "warranty void if tampered" stickers that covers a screw, you are ok.
Thanks! Awesome tutorial. Just updated mini 1018 with 2gb memory and a new dell WLAN card.
brilliant! with the exception of removing screws, i even kept up with you real-time. HDD & mem upgrade then up and running in about 20m! thank you!
@sn0uzer i'd retrace the steps, make sure everything is plugged back in firmly. did u make any mistakes (even small) ? make sure the memory snapped in to place by pushing down.
followed this video and upgraded my inspiron mini very easily. Thank you very much!

Does any 2GB stick of ram work for it or do you need a specific brand and/or make?
I have this 1018 laptop with 1 GB ram. Is it possible to upgrade to 4 GB or is 2 GB the limit for the main board?
1 question where did u update the bios from mine dosent work with 2G ram I was told the bios needs to be updated

Good. Now. How can I assemble it again?
hey jrinco11, thank you for the video. what happens if I just put a 4gb in? is it going to work? I mean, would it burn or something? thank´s again.
@PhantomTD

Does it void the warranty ?
