Oil Pressure Gauge and Warning Light Install

  • One of those things I wish I did earlier on the E55 but still not too late to save the SL. This car does not have to same pump as the E55 but there's many other reasons a car can lose oil pressure (clogged oil filter, clogged pick up strainer, worn pump, broken chain) and all of these will not get detected by an oil level sensor.

    Definitely doing this! On a standalone ECU you can also set it to automatically turn off the engine if the pressure falls below a certain level.

      Good advice! I'll look into something like that for the E55 possibly

    • @tavarish

      You can actually figure out how to do this using a timer and relay. If the pressure falls below a certain level for x seconds, the relay disconnects the ignition. Should be pretty simple, actually.

      Alex i've been following your videos for a while and am a big fan of the channel. Your input here would be greatly appreciated. I was going to comment on one of your video's but you haven't posted a vid of your wagon in a while.
      My question is do you think this modification is worth doing, as I want to modify my E55 and make a full build similar to what you did.
      That being said, obviously I don't want my baby breaking down and all that $$$ lost because of this. As you have the experience of a Mercedes Tech and your YT, do you think you could do this install on your E55 or at least address this?
      Thanks so much and I would really really appreciate any input.

    It made me look on my 2006 T1N Sprinter for a similar tap line (before drilling and tapping one myself!) I'd found nothing online about the existence of such a tap line and indeed I read a comment by one guy who drilled and tapped one of his own.

    What a great follow up video!
    Excellent solution to have redundancy for both indication and measurement for your oil pressure. It is a very easy install and I'm baffled why Mercedes doesn't even include it in their cars! It's just insanity in my opinion! Hiding the oil gauge in the dash is really cool solution. Cutting into the compartment is a life saving procedure and doesn't reduce the value of the car, considering how essential it is to have the light indicator and corresponding oil pressure gauge hidden in the cubby compartment.
    I agree that rebuilding the second AMG engine you bought will allow you to make it better and more robust, especially if that very engine blows for another reason. This is one of the reasons why I like buying refurbished products, because usually they're made better with updated components that what was previously used, at a reduced price.
    Look forward to your build videos when the crank bearings come in. I'm not sure why these are most important to have first, but I know you'll explain and demonstrate why in your video featuring that install and measurement.
    I learn a lot from your videos and the detail you provide.
    I'll definitely come out to see you race once your car is put together and working as you see fit.
    Keep up the good work!

    • @xfmotorsports
      @xfmotorsports  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. Wanted to get the crank and con rod bearings first so the clearances between the bearings and crank can be measured. I'm sure they should be fine but its an important check before rebuilding an engine. If the crank has worn down too much or the con rods have opened up the clearances will be too large and I will find out in time.

    I guess Mercedes have wrongly specked the material they use for that o-ring. Mercedes make a lot of engines that work in various conditions - they should know better. I would ask at a Mercedes authorised service point if there is a maintenance update concerning this o-ring.
    As far as the oil pump chain marks are concerned, Germans in general use tensioners on the oil pump chains - I would check the tensioner for wear as well as the spring on the tensioner for the right pressure. I don't know your specific engine, however like I said, BMW, VW Mercedes - they all use them and the scratching effect due to weak or worn tensioners is known.
    btw - very cool video - thanks for sharing and documenting your work!

    Will the switch also trigger at high oil pressures for when part of the oil galleys where the be (partially)blocked by what knows happens, not sure if it would result in a significant enough increase in oil pressure to be of any use. And also I would add a sound as well for the track driving.

    • @xfmotorsports
      @xfmotorsports  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There would be a drop in pressure if the oil filter or the passages before the filter get clogged. Oil passages after the filter usually don't get clogged unless the filter fails or too much sludge builds up. If they do get clogged it would be really hard to detect because even the oil pump has a pressure regulator and won't go above a certain pressure. I guess you just have to have faith in your oil filter for that.

    • @leexgx
      @leexgx 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      sludge build up would only be a issue if you don't change your oil at correct max mileage oil change (i norm half it witch is 5-6k miles)
      still can't believe there is no oil pressure sensor, but the manual omittance of the oil pressure light can be a give away that it lacks the sensor (as it only has a yellow low oil light there is no second Red Oil pressure light)

    When u rebuild this engine, the main bearings are different sizes, the block is marked with numbers and you’ll have to order basically 2 sets of bearings. The main bearing caps were all reds, and the block side bearings were yelllow, yellow, blue, yellow, blue. I originally ordered all blue ones, and checked the clearances and they were a bit off. Mic the crank, and if that’s within spec, follow the bearing size that’s stamped Into the block.

    • @xfmotorsports
      @xfmotorsports  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you are right. There's 3 different types for the block and 5 different types for the end caps. The letters for the colors are also engraved on the crank. Makes it extremely confusing to order but hope the clearances work out.

    • @xfmotorsports
      @xfmotorsports  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Its from a standard oil pressure switch. Whenever the oil pressure falls low the switch shorts to ground and lights up the warning light. It comes on when the engine is off and turns off when the engine starts and oil pressure builds up so that means its working.

    • @wowgabber123
      @wowgabber123 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jason thinks as if it where air, it wants to be at equil pressure and because the meter is connected on the side it wil read the pressure that is present where the oil line begins.

    • @nirfz
      @nirfz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marko Held: if it isn't bled out, the oil will compress the air inside the line and the gauge will read an airpressure. If that is the right way to di it ok... i don't know, but 2 thinkg would worry me: 1. air is compressable so is the pressure it shows really what you are looking for? 2. when the oil gets hot the air gets hot too and hot air wants to expand which would show an increased oil pressure on the gauge readout. (without the oilpressure being any higher.)

    • @jimmyaber5920
      @jimmyaber5920 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Pressure is pressure. If the hydraulic oil is used as the force to move a cylinder or in applying brakes then the compressible air would compress instead of moving the piston and that is a problem. In that case the air needs to be removed. In the case of pressure gauge the air will compress to the same pressure as the oil and will deform the diaphragm in sensor and read the same.
