The issue here is most Shinigami when they get their Zanpakuto dont have the spirit pressure comparable to a Low on the totem pole seated officer. They usually have a LOT less and grow into their power and control. Ichigo had all that power and no training so of course his Zanpakuto is huge as a result. That is what a lot of people are noticing

He started to become battle hungry but not pure killer like a hollow, his aura became dense, and he noted he didnt even feel the pain of his prior injuries. Of course, since it was still borrowed powers that output was enough to knock down Renji but not Byakuya.

He was getting better towards the battle against Aizen as seen when he was leaving Hueco Mundo when Unohana was healing him as his ability to control his creation of a path was much better compared to when he first entered Hueco Mundo.

Yeah, I'll not vouch for Ichigo's reiatsu control, but none of those reasons matter because what Ichigo wields is not a zanpakto, but a Quincy interpretation of one.
Design wise i always loved that Ichigos base design was predetermined by Rukias. In theory i had wondered if any other shinigami did the same would the reflection of their swords design effect the person that acted as their substitute. That idea still lives in my head rent free.
Cool thing that wasn’t pointed out in the show is that after ichigo became a fullbringer, his reiatsu control improved severely. As we saw in the arrancar arc, when he made the garganta path, the path he created was very poor and unstable so Unohana took over, yet when Ichigo does it again in tybw, it’s a perfect path signaling his improvement
Unohana only took over for a short period of time until Ichigo protested saying that he could make a better path if he had enough reiatsu which led to Unohana handing the path creation back to Ichigo and her restoring his reiatsu. As explained during that scene, Ichigo told Unohana that his robe in Bankai represented the amount of Reiatsu he had left in which at that point he only had about 1/4 of his robe left meaning most of his reiatsu was already used up.
He had zero control over his spirt pressure after getting the powers of a soul reaper dropped on him if he wanted to he could probably reduce it down to normal size now
Actually this is also later revealed his first zanpakuto is only made from the shinigami powers that he took from Rukia. His poor reiatsu control is what contributed to the shape, but here he has yet to unlock his own shinigami powers at this point. Therefore he’s not actually using a zanpakuto, but Rukia’s borrowed power made into a blade form.
It would've been funny to see him with a smaller sealed Zanpakuto in one episode after learning he could shrink it, and then later that same episode it's big again because Ichigo got so used to it being huge, and/or leaves it huge because he just be flexin' 😂

Ichigo was 15 when he became a shinigami and had never learned to control his reiatsu, but he still had all that reiatsu. It’s a lot easier to be learn to control your reiatsu while it’s still fairly low, and then grow both your reiatsu and your ability to control it gradually and at the same time. I think the only comparable cases would be Zaraki and Aizen, as they, too, basically started out with large amounts of reiatsu. In Zaraki’s case, first off, he basically just took someone else’s Zanpaku-to, and by the time it had fully adapted to him and took on the appearance we see today, he had met Unohana and became subconsciously afraid of killing his opponents too quickly. It's been a while but I remember never seeing it again (I haven't seen the new seasons yet) I remember it being explained that because Byakuya breaking his OG sword, it's permanently destroyed but can still transform into Shikai, so that's why he has it like that permanently. Also notice that his OG sword is now just the hilt, and the Shikai version is just the blade with no hilt (but wrapped in a long ribbon)

Spoiler... Ichigos zanpakto isn't an actual zanpakto... it's a weapon formed from his Quincy blood. It's a Quincy weapon just like uryus bow. Even his original shikai and bankai is just a quincy imitation of a real zanpaktos power. In fact, his real zanpakto and bankai don't appear until the thousand year blood war arc.
dafuq no u clearly didn't read the manga. OMZ surpressed his power and never let ichigo use any quincy lower until tybw. Ichigo became a shinigami aka his shinigami powers awakened after rukia gave some of her reishi to him. the power ichigo uses until the fullbringer arc was always his shinigami power melted with the hollow inside him (aka white zangetsu).
This was a full retcon. I think Kubo had an idea that "more powerful shinigami have bigger swords" until he got to the Soul Society arc and realized how rapidly the power scale had gotten out of control. Suddenly things needed to be redefined. Now, a large zanpakuto only means youre powerful, but have no control over that power. Now a Menos Grande/Gillian can be defeated easily by any Liutenant-level Shinigami, where originally "only the Royal Guard can handle something like that"... I think Kubo had a very different idea about Bleach during the first arc, before he decided to make it DBZ with swords.
I think it was a big deal because for a human that's just gained soul reaper Powers. His spirit energy was so massive. He had such a large zumpoc toe and they mainly had a massive amount of spirit energy. Now we know from ichiko's dad that Captain level swords are actually the size of skyscrapers. However, the captain by controlling their spirit energy shrinks there sore down to normal level. We also know that the release state can take on many shapes and forms, so it's not surprising if you end up with a ridiculously huge sword

after watching the tybw anime it made me think about something. nimaya is the inventor of the zanpakuto and is shown making one, so that's means it has to be forged as an asauchi first right? so where the fuck did ichigo get all of his from? he didn't have an asauchi until tybw, before that they all just kinda...materialized? has he just been using a not-zanpakuto the whole time or did I miss something?
He wasn't using an actual zanpakuto the whole time. The first blade he had was jsut the default blade everyone has that is mass produced and literally given out to anyone. Oetsu forges the zanpakutos after they reach the level to use shikai. But Ichigo's "full release shikai state" wasn't an actual zanpakuto. He was literally materializing it out of nowhere. That's what he did from the beginning, literally pulling it out of his chest. Notice nobody else does this shit.

The answer is when Oetsu is forging Ichigo's new Zanpakuto. He mentioned that White is basically an Asauchi due to how Aizen made him. I assume this means Ichigo basically skipped the normal Asauchi phase and went straight to using a Zanpakuto. Since, once your soul fully infuses with an Asauchi, the Asauchi turns into a Zanpakuto, a physical manifestation of the user's soul power.
At the beginning of this series the sword sizes were how you determined how strong somebody was. Then later in the series it was changed to really strong people can reduce the size of their sword and keep it strong. That wasn't the plan all along though@@user-qv5wl3ym4y
Yeah it's also explained why in his bankai state his spiritual energy is almost condensed. That's why his blade is normal sized when he's in that state
His entire outfit was his shinigami powers. His sword was unique because he didn't get it from the same source as the others, it was his Quincy powers.
A lot of the weird things revolving around Ichigo's original zanpakuto was due to his own preconceptions and Ichigo learning as he went along. His sword reacted to Ichigo's thoughts and beliefs, whether they were true or not. This is because Ichigo never truly had a zanpakuto until the very end of the story. The sword he was swinging was just a crude reiatsu construct, he had no asauchi to work with. In effect, he was fighting unarmed for 90% of the story.
To be fair in his case, Ichigo only had a Zanpakuto for literally a few seconds and only really cared about the people he saves. Most Shinigami don't have as high of reiatsu when they first become a Shinigami, they typically grow as they train and experience battle. However, Ichigo is obviously a special case, since he not only took more Reiatsu than he needed (which was because of his Quincy DNA) but his dad is a noble and a captain class shinigami as well, meaning he basically started with a shit load of reiatsu and never had the chance to learn control as it grew.
It's both, Ichigo came out the gate with so much raw power but it's not like someone who was a shinigami for more than a few days would master controlling that energy. Then he gets his bankai and all that raw power turns inward and we see that there was a reason the unreleased sword was so big in the first place. He was always gonna have something unique.
I really miss the OG Zanpakuto, it was so sick and I did like the scabbard on his back with the strap on his chest. That design is what really stood out to me when I first watched Bleach as a kid!
Yeah, it's explained very clearly that the reason it's so big is because he has so much power that he can't control it. One of these instances is when Gin directly comments on the size of Ichigo's shikai zanpakuto in comparison to his own, he states that usually, the size of a shinigami's zanpakuto is a reflection of their reiatsu, but captains have a huge amount of reiatsu, yet their zanpakuto are no bigger than anyone else's because they are able to control it better than anyone else. Implying that if someone had a huge amount of control over their reiatsu but the sheer amount of power they possessed was greater, their zanpakuto would be larger again. By that point, Ichigo had already managed to learn an exceptional level of control, but the amount of power he possessed was still too much for him, hence the size of his zanpakuto.
I always thought that the zanpakuto were always densified and the reason why Ichigo’s impressed so many people is that because it is compacted and his reiatsu was that much stronger than anybody else (reference to the discussion between him and unohana in the dangai )
When he left Hueco Mundo, we learned that he had at least double the reiatsu of a captain-class shinigami. So, even if he wasn't at THAT level when he first used his zanpakuto, he still had far more reiatsu to attempt to control than the vast majority of shinigami
This sort of ended up being untrue as well. Turns out the sword he was using was never a real Zanpakuto to begin with. He didn't get his true Zanpakuto until training with Squad 0.

Ōetsu Nimaiya explained that because a Asauchi wasn't used to make it, it wasn't a real zanpakuto. so, Ichigo's original "zanpakuto" was just a wad of Reiatsu in the shape of a zanpakuto.

The Reiatsu Control is a Wrong Assumption....Zaraki is Far worse than Ichigo but his Zanpakuto can exist as a normal sword. Ichigo's can't exist in that sealed state like everyone's else.

But then later on , we learned that there is no such thing as one constantly in a release form that is their base form. And that is coming from the Craters of the sword, which is a squad 0 member. And on top of that, he forged every single one of them.
What I've never been sure about is, was that original sword Zangetzu in its unreleased state? Was it a jacked up version of Rukia's sword, since he was using her powers at the time? Or was it a unique sword whose name and abilities we never got to learn?
I mean, the concept of shikai is able to be achieved by a lot of soul reapers. What makes Kenpachi's case special was that after conquering his past trauma, he finally hears her voice, the voice of his zanpakuto. Which then results in the most badassest moment in tybw!

For Aizen, though, we don’t really ever get to see him as a kid. We only know that his reiatsu was always absurdly strong based on his own testimony, not through any flashbacks. Every time we _do_ see a younger Aizen, it’s either in the past century, after decades or centuries of training while trying to conceal his true power, or both incredibly brief and before he even had a Zanpaku-to. It’s likely that he struggled very early on to control his reiatsu but, by the time he was actually known by anyone we see, his ability to control his reiatsu had caught up to the amount he had. Also, while we don’t know exactly how the three compare to each other, we do know that Aizen at his full power still had far less reiatsu than Ichigo at _his_ full power (as we see during the final battle in the Reicide arc), though we know that Ichigo’s initial reiatsu was both more unstable and less enormous than it was during that battle (which is why Aizen was previously able to catch Ichigo’s bankai with his bare finger in their first encounter), but then Aizen’s reiatsu has also likely increased from when he was a child, so it’s plausible that child-Aizen had less reiatsu than Ichigo did when he first became a shinigami. Compared to Zaraki, though, it’s impossible to tell for sure, though it’s worth noting that Aizen went out of his way to ensure that Zaraki would never get a chance to fight him before controlling the Hogyoku as he believed that only Zaraki, Yamamoto, and maybe Ichigo would be serious obstacles to him until he gained full control over the Hogyoku.
I’m only on the soul society arc but do we ever see that sword again? Imo it’s way cooler than the second one

It's been a while but I remember never seeing it again (I haven't seen the new seasons yet)
I remember it being explained that because Byakuya breaking his OG sword, it's permanently destroyed but can still transform into Shikai, so that's why he has it like that permanently.
Also notice that his OG sword is now just the hilt, and the Shikai version is just the blade with no hilt (but wrapped in a long ribbon)
On a side note, it always amused me how the story went from spooky high school demon hunting on Earth to Dragonball Z in other dimensions. "This isn't even my final form!"

Ichigos zanpakto isn't an actual zanpakto... it's a weapon formed from his Quincy blood. It's a Quincy weapon just like uryus bow. Even his original shikai and bankai is just a quincy imitation of a real zanpaktos power.
In fact, his real zanpakto and bankai don't appear until the thousand year blood war arc.
dafuq no u clearly didn't read the manga. OMZ surpressed his power and never let ichigo use any quincy lower until tybw. Ichigo became a shinigami aka his shinigami powers awakened after rukia gave some of her reishi to him. the power ichigo uses until the fullbringer arc was always his shinigami power melted with the hollow inside him (aka white zangetsu).
This was a full retcon.
I think Kubo had an idea that "more powerful shinigami have bigger swords" until he got to the Soul Society arc and realized how rapidly the power scale had gotten out of control.
Suddenly things needed to be redefined.
Now, a large zanpakuto only means youre powerful, but have no control over that power.
Now a Menos Grande/Gillian can be defeated easily by any Liutenant-level Shinigami, where originally "only the Royal Guard can handle something like that"...
I think Kubo had a very different idea about Bleach during the first arc, before he decided to make it DBZ with swords.

I think it was a big deal because for a human that's just gained soul reaper Powers. His spirit energy was so massive. He had such a large zumpoc toe and they mainly had a massive amount of spirit energy. Now we know from ichiko's dad that Captain level swords are actually the size of skyscrapers. However, the captain by controlling their spirit energy shrinks there sore down to normal level. We also know that the release state can take on many shapes and forms, so it's not surprising if you end up with a ridiculously huge sword

I mean it was explained, so no mistakes on that. he was literally leaking his energy out constantly, he had no real control over it. Then again why would you expect him to be able to control it. All shinigami go through training for awhile to become Shinigami, he was just shanked one night and become one.
His shikai is not just a blade... it's a bow but only 1/2 of it. If he connects his other blade.. it's a full bow.. he's a true quincy / shinigami

nimaya is the inventor of the zanpakuto and is shown making one, so that's means it has to be forged as an asauchi first right?

He wasn't using an actual zanpakuto the whole time. The first blade he had was jsut the default blade everyone has that is mass produced and literally given out to anyone. Oetsu forges the zanpakutos after they reach the level to use shikai.
But Ichigo's "full release shikai state" wasn't an actual zanpakuto. He was literally materializing it out of nowhere. That's what he did from the beginning, literally pulling it out of his chest.

The answer is when Oetsu is forging Ichigo's new Zanpakuto. He mentioned that White is basically an Asauchi due to how Aizen made him.
I assume this means Ichigo basically skipped the normal Asauchi phase and went straight to using a Zanpakuto. Since, once your soul fully infuses with an Asauchi, the Asauchi turns into a Zanpakuto, a physical manifestation of the user's soul power.

At the beginning of this series the sword sizes were how you determined how strong somebody was. Then later in the series it was changed to really strong people can reduce the size of their sword and keep it strong. That wasn't the plan all along though@@user-qv5wl3ym4y
His initial zanpakutou always reminded me of Angiel/Zack/Cloud's Buster Sword. Glad there is a lore about this too.
Yeah it's also explained why in his bankai state his spiritual energy is almost condensed. That's why his blade is normal sized when he's in that state

It's also the whole talking point during his training fight with Urahara to coax the release of his shikai.
A lot of the weird things revolving around Ichigo's original zanpakuto was due to his own preconceptions and Ichigo learning as he went along. His sword reacted to Ichigo's thoughts and beliefs, whether they were true or not.
This is because Ichigo never truly had a zanpakuto until the very end of the story. The sword he was swinging was just a crude reiatsu construct, he had no asauchi to work with. In effect, he was fighting unarmed for 90% of the story.
To be fair in his case, Ichigo only had a Zanpakuto for literally a few seconds and only really cared about the people he saves. Most Shinigami don't have as high of reiatsu when they first become a Shinigami, they typically grow as they train and experience battle. However, Ichigo is obviously a special case, since he not only took more Reiatsu than he needed (which was because of his Quincy DNA) but his dad is a noble and a captain class shinigami as well, meaning he basically started with a shit load of reiatsu and never had the chance to learn control as it grew.
The high spirit energy and lack of control he had over it is why its so large.

It's both, Ichigo came out the gate with so much raw power but it's not like someone who was a shinigami for more than a few days would master controlling that energy. Then he gets his bankai and all that raw power turns inward and we see that there was a reason the unreleased sword was so big in the first place. He was always gonna have something unique.
It's been mentioned that some zanpakuto could potentially be the size of skyscrapers without control

I really miss the OG Zanpakuto, it was so sick and I did like the scabbard on his back with the strap on his chest. That design is what really stood out to me when I first watched Bleach as a kid!
Yeah, it's explained very clearly that the reason it's so big is because he has so much power that he can't control it. One of these instances is when Gin directly comments on the size of Ichigo's shikai zanpakuto in comparison to his own, he states that usually, the size of a shinigami's zanpakuto is a reflection of their reiatsu, but captains have a huge amount of reiatsu, yet their zanpakuto are no bigger than anyone else's because they are able to control it better than anyone else. Implying that if someone had a huge amount of control over their reiatsu but the sheer amount of power they possessed was greater, their zanpakuto would be larger again. By that point, Ichigo had already managed to learn an exceptional level of control, but the amount of power he possessed was still too much for him, hence the size of his zanpakuto.
You can also notice his first zanpakuto was very close in color to Sode no Shirayuki
People forget that at this point in the TYBW arc Ichigo has only been a Shinigami for three years.

I always thought that the zanpakuto were always densified and the reason why Ichigo’s impressed so many people is that because it is compacted and his reiatsu was that much stronger than anybody else (reference to the discussion between him and unohana in the dangai )

When he left Hueco Mundo, we learned that he had at least double the reiatsu of a captain-class shinigami. So, even if he wasn't at THAT level when he first used his zanpakuto, he still had far more reiatsu to attempt to control than the vast majority of shinigami

You can see this when he gets his true shikai it’s not constant release and the other user Kenpachi was actually just holding his strength back and his shikai wasn’t even in his sword because yachiru was serving as his vice captain. But after she fused back as his shikai he could use it

so, Ichigo's original "zanpakuto" was just a wad of Reiatsu in the shape of a zanpakuto.

Also to keep something in mind. We later learn that the Zanpakutou he's been using prior to the TYBW wasn't even a Zanpakutou. But merely a fake made from his shinigami heritage. His OWN riatsu created that blade when he took the powers from Rukia.

The Reiatsu Control is a Wrong Assumption....Zaraki is Far worse than Ichigo but his Zanpakuto can exist as a normal sword. Ichigo's can't exist in that sealed state like everyone's else.

It is actually big solely due to his massive spiritual pressure. If he was a normal shinigami, it literally couldn't be that size. The fact that he might have been able to effect its size with better control doesn't change the cause (which is his immense spiritual pressure).
His poor reiatsu control is a constant issue, even Unohana noticed it during the Arrancar arc

Nothing beats Kenpachi. He has a Zanpakuto that has it's own shikai and also a vice captain.
I mean, the concept of shikai is able to be achieved by a lot of soul reapers. What makes Kenpachi's case special was that after conquering his past trauma, he finally hears her voice, the voice of his zanpakuto.
Which then results in the most badassest moment in tybw!
