I'm very proud of you not stupidly throwing your units headlong into the militarily occupied city.
Also, please consider that your Lord is your strongest unit (most of the time) and can take a hit. He's wasted in the backline doing nothing but boosting morale. Friendly fire is a thing and your units' defence is weakest in their back, so if you fire into a melee fight, you'll lose men. Be aware of that, but don't let it stop you from doing it anyway, in some situations it's the best move. If you have more units in a skirmish than the enemy, use one to flank, fighting on multiple fronts impacts a units morale, so they'll flee faster that way (you'll also deal more damage as more men are fighting instead of hanging back in a blob).
The term 'Pyrrhic Victory' references the ancient greek king Pyrrhos I. of Epirus, who after an extremely costly victory against the Romans said something to the effect of 'another victory like this and we are lost'. It means your losses are so bad, you might as well have lost.

The idea is you have your infantry that you get stuck in to the enemy line and forget about, then you closely control more mobile units like cavalry to flank the enemy. That's the very basic principle present in the older games, however there are so many options and ways to win in Warhammer.

If a unit has a white flag above it then the unit is running away (routing) but could come back. If above the unit there is a white flag with a skull then the unit is "shattered" and is running off the battlefield and won't return. Once a unit is shattered you no longer need to shoot or attack it.

A unit with the "causes terror" trait will cause nearby units with leadership under 16 for terror route. Those will come back once the terror effect is out of range or their leadership goes over 16. If a units breaks 3 times, it will shatter. When a unit shatters it won't rally and the leadership bar will disappear, leaving it with only a health bar over it's banner

As a veteran of the total war games, and with thousands of hours in TWW3, it’s so much fun to see someone new entering this amazing franchise. Do not apologize for your mistakes, this game is confusing and incredibly dense, and watching someone struggle and slowly learn is the whole point of this kind of content. I really look forward to the rest of your play through, and I would personally want to see your full journey with little to no editing.
You’ll be finishing the prologue soon and be onto a new campaign. I am so excited to see which faction you pick to play first, and I would recommend to just pick whichever seems coolest to you, they are all good and can be learned, even the ones the game doesn’t recommend for a first campaign.
I can totally understand if you want to play the game vanilla, but I would totally recommend, even for a first campaign, the Legendary Lore mod, and the SFO mod. The LL mod simply adds some fun lore flavor text, so you can learn about especially interesting units. The SFO mod, while an overhaul, completely stays true to the essence of the game while adding really cool mechanics to every faction. The mod is incredibly high quality and in my opinion, is just a straight upgrade from the vanilla base game.

Units Rest by just being Idle ^^ Tiredness can make or break your Tactic. Tired units get slower, hit less and get hit more often.
I recommend you Hold Spacebar. You will get a Bar on the Right of your Screen where you can set how much information you want to see on the battlefield. For example you could set to always see Ranges. Or have a Threat Indicator. Meaning it shows you when you select one of your Units, there will be a small Warning Sign above enemy Units. It can be Green, Orange or Red.
Green means your Unit is superior and will likely have no Problem facing that Unit.
Orange means it will be an even Battle and you have to make sure your Unit comes out on top by helping it with other Units or similar.
Red means that your Unit will not be able to win against that Enemy easily. They will likely be beaten to a Pulp by them.

So i have arrived to give you sone use hints, tricks and some personal things.
    1. If you want infantry to stay stuck in the frontline and not having to tell them to attack over and over, try deactivating Guard mode (shield icon in the bottom) this would have made your sword infantry chase those chaos hounds after they ran over to the other archers.
    2. Lords and Heroes are incredibly powerful in the total war:warhammer series. Depending on their Role they can wipe out entire squads or enemy lords/heroes on their own.
    3. When you group up some units, in the bar that shows the hotkey there is a little Button, you can use that to lock/unlock their formation.
    4. Formations are always dragged from left to right. That way you can ensure they face the right way.
5.glad you are having so much fun with this Game.
    6. Your sword Infantry should most likely be your Frontline while the Spearmen guard your flanks. Infantry with shield often have high melee defense, meaning they will hold the line a lot longer than those spearmen. Keep those alive and dandy in case the enemy brings cavalry or monsters (like that giant in episode 1)
Just remembered one more Thing. When you mark all your Units and just use the Up Arrow Button on your Keyboard. They will move forward in the current formation.

  • @mep1990
    @mep1990 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

The hold and drag to position your units works from left to right, meaning that if you do it from right to left, they are gonna face the opposite way.
Now on a more tactical level, total war battle mechanics are quite complex. Even without the massive variety that Warhammer inthroduces, there's still a lot at play, for example if an enemy is attacked from the rear or the flanks, it will have a strong morale penalty. Generally speaking, if you attack a unit from multiple sides, it will most probably break, but more elite units will hold longer generally. Cavalry is generally good at attacking range units, because it can get to them fast before the rangede units can do a lot of manage to them, however, ranged units can defeat cavalry if multiple units focus fire on one cavalry unit to shatter them before they get to the missiles. So it's not pure rock-paper-scissors, some units types have advantages over others, but those advantages can be overcome by other means. And that's for historical Total War games, Warhammer Total War .introduces so mmany new variables (flying units, monsters, magic, etc.) that it gets time to know how to best use all the tools. But here are some very basic tips:
    - missiles generally are able to do quite a lot of damage, specially if you focus multiple units firing into a single target. Units with shields will block a percentage of non-artillery projectiles that come from the front, so it is generally better to fire at enemy units that have no shields, but once again, it is situational: if you throw enough projectiles at a unit with shields it will still take a lot of damage, it's just some of the projectiles will be wasted. Generally, if you have the ranged advantage, you want to shoot as much before entering into melee as you can, and if you don't have the ranged advantage you want to get into melee as fast as you can, and try to catch the enemy missile units in melee as fast as you can. While there are exceptions, generally, if a missile unit is engaged in melee, it will stop firing, but even some of the soldiers in the unit keep firing, they will be much less effective tthan if they are not engaged in melee. Also, if you have other units in melee, it can be risky to fire at the melee from your back line, as friendly fire is very much a thing and both armour and shields offer less protection from the back, meaning that if you shoot into a melee from your backline, yes, your unit will try to hit more of the enemy than of your own, but because the enemy is facing your missiles and your have their backs to their missiles, the few shots that hit your troops are going to cause more damage. A good general strategy is to focus fire into the scariest enemy units as they approach you and once they are in melee, change your targets to another unhit, possible the enemy missiles that will have probably stayed further back from the melee. If you have the chance, you can also try to reposition your missile troops once the melee has started, so they can shoot the enemy from the side or the back, thus making it much less likely to hit your own troops. Most gunpowder units have straight trajectory, meaning that if your own units are standing between them annd the enemy, they will not fire, while archers can fire over the heads of your own soldiers (but as I( said, if they are in melee, it's kind of risky). Larger units, like monstrous infantry or big monsters are easier to hit even if they are engaged in melee, so it may be worth firing at them without repositioning even if they are in melee. Flying units are also generally easier to hit.
    - Armore and armor-piercing can be important. Generally speaking, highly armoured units are tougher and will last longer against normal attacks, but there are units who have a lot of specialised armour piercing damage (generally, gunpowder, infantry with large two-handed weapons and many monsters. have a lot of armour piercing damage). All units have some basic and some armour piercing damage, it's just some have more of one or the other (if a unit has significant armour piercing, it will have an icon besides their damage stat). A unit that doesn't have a lot of armour piercing can still defeat an armoured unit if it is just better, but it will take longer than taking it down with specialised armour piercing damage.
    - On a similar note, some units have a bonus vs infantry (generally dual-wielding infantry and some cavalry and monsters), some have a bonus vs large (generally spearmen, halbadiers and some cavaly and monsters), and some don't have any of these two bonuses. This bonuses apply to both the melee attack (they land their hits more often) and weapon strength (they do more damage when they hit). While it can be difficult, most of the time it can be helpful to try to reposition your troops in the frontline so that they face those unit types they have bonus against. Note, the "large" category includes anything larger than infantry: cavalry,m monsters, etc (if in doubt, there's a symbol on the unit card that indicates if it's large or small).
    - The charge bonus is also important, it gets applied to both melee attack and weapon strength for a short period in melee combat after having performed a "charge", that is, entering melee with a charge animation. Some units have a small bonus charge, meaning that it makes little difference whether they enter melee from a charge, using an attack order, or they are stationary and recieve the enemy charge. Other units have large charge bonuses (cavalry, monsters and some more offensive infantry), meaning that they benefit a lot from entering melee through a charge, and depending on the unit, can also benefit from cycle charging (charging, fighting in melee for a short time and then disengaging to charge again). Spears and halbards (and some other units) have a trait called "Charge defense vs large", meaning that if they are stationary and receive a charge from a large enemy from the front, they nullify the enemy charge bonus. Some have even the "deflect charge" attribute, meaning that if they are charged, they not only nullify the enemy charge bonus, but they do extra damage when receiving charges. That is why with spears and halbards against cavaly, it is more benefficial to stand still and receive the charge rather than charging back into enemy cavalry (as long as your spears receive the charge from the front). An interesting variation of this is when you have two spear units vs one cavalry, you have them stationary until the enemy charges, then, one of the units receives the charge and the other epositions and charges from the back or the flanks of the enemy to trap the cavalry.
    - There are so many more things to consider, like magic or special traits of certain units. But I think those are the most common basic things to consider for every faction.

@@ChipHardbody Yes, it is a lot, I know, but it's part of the charm. By the way, a couple more things I forgot to mention.
      - Units get tired when fighting and when runming, but not when walking. Among the customisation options, there's an option of "running by default", which is on by default, meaning that if you want your troops to walk, you have to change their speed manually by clicking the button (and do so with every new movement order). If you turn it off, your normal movement orders will be walking and you can do a run order by double clicking the terrain. I like to have the "running by default" off so my troops don't tire unless I really need them to, but recognising when you have to walk or when to run is another thing to learn, so probably that's why the option is on by default.
      - Disengaging from melee combat is a high-risk manouver: you are presenting your backs to the enemy and thus the enemy has free attack opportunities while you are not attacking yourself. If your unit is slower than whatever it is fighting, disengaging is a very bad idea, unless you have another unit holding the enemy in place. Large and fast units have it easier: the large mass makes running over enemy opponents easier and if you are faster, once disengaged you no longer take damage, but still, you will take some extra damage from disengaging. Generally speaking, if you are winning a melee fight, there's no reason to disengage unless you really need to face another threat very fast, and with infantry, you should only do that if another unit is holding the enemy in place so it doesn't pursue you while you are disengaging. Chariots, some large monsters and cavalry are different, you might benefit from disengaging to cycle charge them.

Trees are partially blocking projectiles from archers and other ranged units, but if unit has "woodsman" attribute there is a mechanic that while unit is shooting from a treeline for the first 2 second after shot its projectiles ignore trees and go through them, so if you place your range units with this attribute near the edge of a tree line it can shoot as effectively as in open, but will take significantly less dmg from other range units.

    • @mep1990
      @mep1990 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

mep is correct. Woodsman attribute is also for movement (and, if I remember correctly, removes combat penalties in woods for cavalry and big creatures). Woodsman also expands the unaffected time of arrows as op said, allowing archers to setup deeper, but all archers can use tree cover at least a little. By default, fired rounds like arrows are unaffected by trees for a small window (1/2 second, maybe), so you can shoot out of the edge of trees, but projectiles entering the forest are HEAVILY impacted.

@@ChipHardbody let me offer you this then, When you drag a unit (or several) you can choose how spread out the unit is.
I.E you can drag your spearmen into a thin line or make then stay in a square formation. Melee units usually hold longer when you bunch them in a box as less soldiers are physically fighting at one time, prolonging the fight and giving your ranged units more time to shoot the enemy. Having ranged units in a tight box formation makes them turn faster and therefore, switch targets quicker.
A thin line is better when your melee units are high damage as you want to maximize the soldiers in combat (great weapons and anti-infantry are good examples) and ranged units are better in a thin line when you expect them to get shot at as a thin line formation means a lot of arrows will land behind the unit, whereas in a box formation they are a much "bigger" target.
Same goes for artillery, they will smash a tight formation but take time to accurately hit a thin formation.
Finally, using square formations with your melee units allows your ranged units to shoot past them between the gaps in your lines with minimum friendly fire, not so much an issue for arrows as they arc but if you ever use guns and bullets they need clear line of sight.

It would be a legendary tale if they had pulled it off :)

Hey, I came to your channel cause tw warhammer is one of my favorite games. You'll get the hand of it, I know, if you need more help zerkovich has really good explanation about the game.
And my own advices would be:
1: play with the unit banner on, it will help you to have a quick understanding of each unit
2: high tier units (they have a 3 on their banner) like the tzar guard can easily beat lower tier units (like the marauders) even if you see that they are less
3: always protect your archers, even if they are a hybrid unit they will dish out more damage with ranged attacks ñ
4: don't blob your units, try to have a little distance between them because a spellcaster in this game can destroy blobs of infantry in one spell

I'm so dissapointed you didnt charge headlong into the enemy city.
The controls are important to grasp, no shame in looking up basic guides or double checking mid fight in the options. And dont be afraid to do a whole fight on half speed at this point. But, once you figure out the controls, and get past the pretty well done tutorial, charge headlong more often. screwing up super bad and getting your butt kicked can give way to some really useful skills!

    "I've heard this story."
Warhammer was, famously, a big influence on Warcraft (although the urban legend that Warcraft was originallly going to be a Warhammer licensed game isn't true) so really it's just an idea coming home.

saw someone mention a lot of good tips so ill mention a few as well, pressing G with several unit selected put them in a group of them so having your front lines in a group at the start makes it easier to forms lines with them quickly. also your archers can only fire when not in melee with the enemy, so keeping them abit further back will ensure they can fire. sometimes keeping a unit behind the main line to help against flanks from cav is good but i don't know how the ai works in this campaign. best of luck though !
