On the topic of distance, could you do something a little more basic for people like me who struggle to hit 300ft? Would love if you could elaborate on how to fix the elbow thing for example.
Absolutely!! So we're going to do a four-part series with this, and in week 4 we're going to cover some essentials for how to even get to this point! My hope truly is that as you see things that I can tweak it helps to look and see if those exist within your throw currently as well. The quick tip in this video is a prime example of something I had worked on before trying to clear 400 feet, and focusing on that could add significant distance if it's not already in your form!
I kinda feel like if he can get even 5% improvement, those same tips will give me like 20% (maybe more), since I know I've got way more rough spots in my mechanics and timing.
With you. I can sometimes hit 300, but with no consistency. I measure everything on UDisc, which on my phone is +/-16', but I know that it is my ragged edge. That said, on my favorite course, hitting every hole within 20 feet of my target at 280 would putt on about half the holes.
Everyone wants more distance because it's the only part of the game with positive cognitive framing. For mid-range layups and putting the goal is fixed and it's a game of trying to not mess up (minimize the bad). Whereas driving for distance is about how far you can get (maximize the good).
Because of you I've been throwing putter only rounds for the past month. I've learned to hyzer flip and put my putters on any line I want. Super grateful for your videos and approach to the game. Thank you for what you do.
I gained 160ft to my drive in one year just by watching TH-cam videos and recording videos of myself throwing! It literally took me hundreds of man hours out in a field practicing shots, filming watching my shots and then watching TH-cam pro tips! I went full disc golf junkie mode, now I'm ripping my disc! Robbie is definitely right, distance doesn't make you a better golfer even though it does help! Up shots and most importantly putting is what makes or breaks your round!!! Disc golf isn't easy but with proper form, technique and lots of practice you can be really good!!! Thanks for all the pro tips it definitely helped my game! I toss every upshot on every drive and I try to putt every upshot! The more reps the better I get!!! I have some videos on my channel. Leave a comment on things I need to improve on thanks!!!
Great content, Again!!! My suggestions to get more distance are usually start with the best tools aka 1. Throw fairway drivers - impacted less by nose angle, 2. Throw slightly understable - get full flight, 3. Throw lighter disc, it takes less energy to get up to speed, 4. Now, work on form, timing, follow through, etc. 5. Watch more Robbie C vids.
I had to laugh a little because I'm so new to disc golf that I most of the time throw about 290 to 325ft, and then randomly I do something right and get a rip at 350ft... So a video evaluation seems like a great idea! Thanks for the video, you always put out very good information in the best format.
I love your channel! Love the humor and how you break things down so simply. You have talent man - not just disc golf. There will be detractors, but whatever dude, your killing it! Keep up the great work, we appreciate you!
Thanks for the shoutout to Disc Golf Form Check! I started moderating two months ago and we have really worked on the negativity and cleaning up the page. I think you brought in a lot of new members recently, so thank you! Would love to have you on for a live session.
Heckin' love ya Robbie. Thanks for what you do. Here's something I would love addressed in this series: when I try to change my form, I invariably get a little worse. So I really struggle to keep that change and I also struggle to know if the change I made was actually correct (since like I said, it made me worse). Furthermore, once I get back to my normal level, I'm never sure if I fixed something, or if I've just adjusted to the new movement. I hope that made sense. I struggled to put it into a comment without really belaboring it.
Something that's helped me a lot is what you said about keeping your hand close to your chest. Like swiping a credit card in a straight line back and forward. Helped keep the disc nice and flat. It's really easy to do a baseball style swing and lean back then your disc goes sky nose up every time. Good video my man
Great editing as usual Robbie. Funny enough, distance is the one thing I have plenty of!! Only because it all I worked on for 7 years! I wish your dog would've let you make that new putting video 😉
Thank you Rob, your channel help me a lot. I’m new to the game. Been playing 3 months now. Ever since I watch your channel My score got a lot better from +14 to +6😊
Robbie, great start to a series! The whole "pick one to two things" to work on at a time should be triple underlined with 3 exclamation marks. I'm still pretty new to DG and I know early on there's so much to work on that nothing seemed to work with my form if I tried to focus on everything. Once I started thinking about only 1 - 2 things and just working on those things progress started to well... progress. For likeminded people trying to work on their form/distance film yourself, film yourself, film yourself.
mainly, people want more distance because courses are getting longer. We all want to be able to reach those long par 3's but our distance lacks. Like me, i throw 325-350 consistently but there are par 3's at my local course that are 400+ and it causes me to have to lay up. If I want to be able to compete at longer courses, then distance would be necessary especially in Open division where throwing 400+ is a expected.
Um, to some of us your 383 is massive distance. Been playing a year and my average drive is 200-215. What’s the key to that next step? I’d be happy with 300 with control.
Congrats on 10k!!! Loved this video. For a while I became complacent and just accepted that this was just as good as I was going to get until recently when I had more time to play. I realized there was a lot of little things with form that just piled up that could be fixed. I love the advice to just fix a couple things at a time.
Robbie great grip advice! I’ll need to do some field work to implement but I started then watching pros and was like man I’ve been gripping wrong. Love your content!
Your channel has helped me deal with the psychological part of Discgolf. The number one tip I got from you is to divide each hole into segments based on the par, and not trying to hit the basket or getting max distance straight from the tee. My rounds has become much more stabile, and on my best rounds ive shaved off a few throws :)
Beautiful Aussie 😁. I have two of them and I can honestly say I think they are more obsessed with frisbee than any person on this planet haha. Love the content and how you deliver. 🤙🏻
Simon Lizotte, a guy I could qualify as an expert on distance throwing in court, did a good form critique on distance a while ago. The plant foot way forward (in front, L of teepad for RHBH) thing seems important. You do it. But that's for a full send driver S-turn starting left. Won't work for 120' hyzer putter touch shots.
it only took me 15 years to start consistently hitting around 350. occasionally i might get something longer but it's pretty damn rare. the main thing i think is find solid advice like robbie preaches and then go to an open field and throw and throw and throw some more. i've been practicing my putting at home over covid and now i think i'm finally ready to play some am events.
Hey, Robbie kinda unrelated to the video but I just wanted to share some progress! I am in my first tournament on Memorial Day, and in preparation, I believe that I have shot my first ever 900+ round simply just looking at the course differently. I am still looking to gain distance, but I am looking to improve everywhere. Just wanted to say thank you for all the content you post!
Measure your throws on udisc when you do field work. That way you can compare progress over time. It's important to have that feedback so you can see when changes to your form are actually helping. But also you really get to know your bag. When you get on the course, you know which disc to throw for a given shot shape and distance.
Hey Robbie, last week was my first week ever playing so I'm digging through your videos for fun lol. I found a disc on my first 9 holes and was lucky enough to find the owner because his son was playing in a local league that i googled (karma point yay). In fact learning how to put is my priority since my arm speed is really low. Hopefully I pick up some tips from your stuff :)
My average long throw is about 180'. Okay I'm 71, but I want to throw farther. I throw better at a stand still than trying a walk/run up. I know...whatever... Works for you. I'm still trying different grips to see which is tight enough but loose, so the disc pops out. Then..if I can remember the grip it goes 5-10' more.
Hey Robbie thanks for the great content on the channel, Im new to disc golf but fully addicted. I was wondering if you could answer a question. How far can a average player throw a spike hizer or a thumber? thanks ahead of time!!!!
Totally! So when people first start learning to throw a disc, it usually ends up with them throwing the disc out in front of their body on a straight line. This straight line has the release point being significantly further beyond where your power comes from. If you think about swinging a baseball bat or a tennis racket, your hands hit to the side of you almost 45 degrees away from your body as you're turning. When you swing into this position and focus on accelerating to that point rather than accelerating to the point where the disc is in front of you, you'll feel the disc start to "pop" or rotate out of your hand. To me this is the biggest truth to be gained from the Spin N Throw community as it demonstrates that hit point clearly! This is a video from that community talking a little more about it! th-cam.com/video/93lliti4UqM/w-d-xo.html
I would be happy with this too... I can throw pretty damn straight and my approach game is better than my friends but I fail on distance and on putting.
Most likely, you're not reaching back properly and releasing the disc with enough speed from your pull through and lower body torque. Just these two implementations should get you 25+
The funny thing is that I throw farther than most of the people I know yet I still lose to a lot of them. I started playing disc golf about a year ago and I can throw close to 400 with a top distance of 450 but I’m really inconsistant in my accuracy and putting.
I'm tuning into this and thinking... "383 feet is bombing... I have dreams of throwing 383 feet." BH is about 250 feet consistently and FH is about 330 feet consistently.
You and me are twins. Same bh and fh for me. Maybe a little better backhand. I've been trying to improve for a couple years and its just not gonna happen. I've had people tell me, show me, teach me and they all say my form looks pretty good. I'm just not genetically built for anymore distance.
@@codymoreland4496 so, I applied all of these things, slowly and practiced my form for 2 weeks. I was throwing at my usual 250 and finally broke 300. The biggest factors I noticed for me, was the upside down “y” shape. I was leaning back and it would cause me overreach and to release the disc nose up. I started by exaggerating it and leaning forward (at least it felt like I was). That alone actually gave me more snap as well. I think that’s the missing part of my BH is the “snap” or that “tip of the whip” which is why my FH just naturally goes further. For context, I’m short but have always and continue to play a lot of sports. I’m also in my mid 40’s and just discovered DG during the pandemic. Don’t give up! I’m still not consistent but I threw a few today that were 290+.
Is the final method going to be one-on-one coaching with Seabas22/Sidewinder22? Guy is the form guru GOAT, and deserves some kind of award for all the advice he's given to the DG community.
It is unfortunately not with seabss22, but man do I agree with you 100% He is a legend and a saint for the countless birdies he’s provided the world with his form wisdom!
Play in your local leagues. Even just random doubles tournaments. I only knew 1 guy, and we ended up playing in a 6 man group. I learned more from that one round with all those golfers than I ever did trying to improve on my own. I used to shoot +15 to +20, and after a few rounds I'm shooting +5 to +10. Listen, and be open to criticism
8 ft turns a 25 ft putt into a 17 ft putt...lol. This is true only in the specific case of a 408 ft hole where all additional 8 ft of distance were directed towards the hole. In the case of longer holes, this extra 8 feet is either a slightly closer upshot or fairway drive. In the case of shorter holes, the 8 feet is basically meaningless, but may, in some niche cases, allow you to throw a putter instead of a mid, or a mid instead of a fairway drive. Anyway, congrats on the extra distance, but that was a bit of an oversell calling it a 17 ft putt instead of 25 ft
Don’t practice I have of a secret hand cream called double distance aka (DD) It allows maximum distance to your drive ! It was developed in a Russia laboratory 🧪 by Ivan spinner, believe me ? you want to get your hands on some DD’s lol awesome vid
Did you have fun? It’s good. Just enjoy the game. In terms of whether most people throw 300 feet starting out? Most people do not! In terms of whether that indicates good form that will last you through your developmental, most likely not, unless you have some sort of prior experience throwing discs. It’s definitely possible to throw 300 early on with a form that may resist distance and control improvement. But that really doesn’t matter right now. Have fun! Just tuck it in the back of your head for later if you start wanting to get even better than you already are.
@@bensalemi7783 I had fun I plan on practicing more. I've been playing softball and baseball for over 30 yrs. I've never thrown a disk before if I can get my accuracy down I'd be happy.
I’m stuck at 300 - 320. I’ve been playing for 2 years and getting older (52). I would love to rip 400 feet in the next few months and stay there for a while before my body starts ripping apart 😂 Thank you Robbie for sharing your knowledge. After watching a couple of your videos I had to subscribe.
It's not the distance for me it's the curving left and right I need a more consistent straight throw. I mean my disc's go straight then have hard curves I know it's because of the numbers on the disc mainly because I feel like they could go farther before curving
The bigger the Fade the harder that turn. I have had some success over the past almost two weeks by using mids and fairways (nothing higher than 9 Speed) it has something to with being able to throw that speed of disc proprly - at least from what youtube had told me so far
@@sgsgtvs haha. If only. The overall issue with form stuff comes to this, there are a lot of people who think they know something, so they chime in on whatever little things they know, but they don't know the cause, change or effect of any of it. They just parrot what others say all the time. I mean, to learn you gotta do it, but were also talking about a situation where really bad advice can hurt people, so as somebody who teaches, this is something that I have to be aware of, and as well be a gatekeeper over form advice stuff as well. There are just so many people out there how are trying to explain something they heard that one time and apply it in the wrong spot or at the wrong time that will cause .. oh jeez, i'ma just ramble. WE'll just go with your answer. hahaha. It's not quite to that level with a majority of people, but yes.
Check out spin and throw bro 👍🏻 I was literally stuck in the 350 ft RHBH for the longest time. “Pulling” just doesn’t work if you want a competitive pro distance. Couple hard months later, 440 ft comes more consistently :) The only downside... your distance drivers rarely come out to play anymore haha 😂 we have short holes here sadly lol
Anyone try the app Givego? It’s a platform that allows you to connect with some disc golf pros for form analysis. Haven’t tried it and not sure how much it costs but it’s something that might be worth trying.

Didnt know I wasn't subbed... awkward... thanks for calling me out my guy.
Lol great intro
Distance is what people want, but control and putting is what they need.
are you the same rob c from dgcr?
Not sure what dgcr is?
@@RobbieCDiscgolf Disc Golf Course Review aka dgcoursereview.com (where Seabass/Sidewinder does most of the form reviews).
How does everyone measure the distance of their throws? Walking it out seems really inaccurate
cute pup
400 on a golf line consistently is a lot better than 475/500 with inaccuracy and huge flexes
Is throwing 300+ feet good for someone who has never played before?
Yeah that's pretty good. I'm still stuck at 300 after a year
@@williamburk5818 this past Tuesday was my first time playing
My longest forehand distance is 391 feet.
I’m stuck at 300 - 320. I’ve been playing for 2 years and getting older (52). I would love to rip 400 feet in the next few months and stay there for a while before my body starts ripping apart 😂
Thank you Robbie for sharing your knowledge. After watching a couple of your videos I had to subscribe.
Such a good dude and awesome videos. Even reached out on Instagram after following thanking me for doing so. Go follow :D
I just wanna throw again after 3 years out of the game due to injury and COVID
It's not the distance for me it's the curving left and right I need a more consistent straight throw. I mean my disc's go straight then have hard curves I know it's because of the numbers on the disc mainly because I feel like they could go farther before curving
The bigger the Fade the harder that turn. I have had some success over the past almost two weeks by using mids and fairways (nothing higher than 9 Speed) it has something to with being able to throw that speed of disc proprly - at least from what youtube had told me so far
@@cade10101 thank you I'll have to try that out
oh man, the disc golf form group on facebook is iew.
A few form people and a whole lot of people who have no clue.
The most distance.
we all know catan is the best game behind him tho
that might be the hottest take this channel has seen in a minute!! hahahaha
Nah, Lost Cities from the one true Doctor Knizia is the best!
Wait a second. There's no love for the Fantasy Flight edition of Civilization, Five Tribes, and 7 Wonders up there? I'll fix that!
More distance, (cowbell).
Came for the distance, stayed for Catan.
Some people throw 400 so effortlessly and I just don't understand how.
450ft par 3 is why I want to throw further.
Check out spin and throw bro 👍🏻
I was literally stuck in the 350 ft RHBH for the longest time. “Pulling” just doesn’t work if you want a competitive pro distance.
Couple hard months later, 440 ft comes more consistently :)
The only downside... your distance drivers rarely come out to play anymore haha 😂 we have short holes here sadly lol
What if you got permanently banned from Facebook?
Dang I'd take 383, I'm sitting around 240
“I’ve never claimed to be a bomber” *throws 380 feet*
Im trying to reach 300 ft. But I am also 58.
Also at 58, no one( I mean no one ) watches my channel as it doesn't relate to them, lol
That Facebook group has gotten a bit bizarre. No mods, lots of spam..
Anyone try the app Givego? It’s a platform that allows you to connect with some disc golf pros for form analysis. Haven’t tried it and not sure how much it costs but it’s something that might be worth trying.
That looks interesting. I just loaded the app. It's $12.99 a month or $99 per year. They have options for several sports, including Disc Golf.
Looks like you might have to pay for the coaching sessions in addition to the fee.
@@victorchelf Ugh that’s annoying you have to pay just to be on the platform. Seems like they should just take a cut from any analysis you pay for.
12 people need better aim because they missed the like button
Thanks, yah scrub.
