In 1892, legendary Army Capt. Joseph Blocker reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief and his family back to their tribal land. Embarking on a harrowing and perilous journey from Fort Berringer, N.M., to the grasslands of Montana, they soon encounter a young widow whose family was killed on the plains. The travelers must now band together to survive a punishing landscape that's crawling with hostile Comanches and vicious outliers.

Watched this many times. Christian Bale was astonishing as expected, but Rosamund Pike was mesmerizing and heartbreakingly poignant, and the two of them were breathtakingly wonderful in their scenes together. The ending was a heart grabber.

It has a few meanings, one is "ok all is square with me and you" or "it is done". One possible origin is the gesture resembles calm water.

Saw it yesterday, a depressing hideous mess of a movie, settler family killed leaving the grieving mother alive, think Jerimiah Johnson crazy lady, Rip off of lines from unforgiven, rip off of white land baron and shoot out from Open Range. Hollywood couldn't make a good or even decent movie if their lives depended on it, the main reason I pretty much only watch TH-cam now days. I give this disaster one steaming buffalo turd
Well, an awful lot of people on IMDB would not agree with you.
I felt like it moved too slow, as well as it was plagued by bad script writing.
This comment is a little unfair - I don`t disagree with the points about the ripped off lines, ("I`ve killed everything that walked or crawled"), and the Open Range comparisons, but the movie suffers mainly from bad editing and the fateful decision by the Director to shoot in sequence. Once you`ve done it you can`t go back ! But, in fairness, the whole cast played played their parts well part - in particular, Christian Bale`s portrayal of Capt. Joseph Blocker was perhaps his best ever and an Oscar nomination could well come his way.
