I never knew why but I cry every time I hear the drums, the voices of my people, and seeing them so beautifully adorned with pride of who they are. it’s almost like a choked sob of appreciation and longing. My spirit leaps as I see them. my eyes fill with emotion I can’t explain. It’s overwhelming but I am proud of my people. Miigwech!
I come back to this comment as it’s at 222 likes. i would like to share my appreciation to anyone enjoying the sound of this music. I am a proud Ojibwa, and I hope whoever sees this. Native or Not, feels the comfort I do. May you all be blessed and protected.

Powwows are newer in the culture, not everybody sings this way. Consider the female backups, that is really new. And some drums still won't use female backups. Women still aren't allowed to touch the drum, or sit at drum.
In fact, some people hated me for recording Young Spirit back then!
But in 2013, Young Spirit become champions at Gathering Of Nations, and at San Manuel Powwow. These are 2 biggest contest powwows in the world. After that, Young Spirit was recording at Canyon Records studios in Phoenix.

    • @johnthomas9466

Maybe the most real statement made my friend.music is the universal language.
Once a drum is struck no matter now or a ten thousand years ago it reverberating through space and time.
There's always a drum being struck high on a Mesa in hopivilla they say since time began there has been a drummer strikes the same beat they change like the change of the guard a person climbs up and takes over the task as the other stops and goes about daily stuff .
But they change every day never ending.
The culture of the Japanese people has always been intriguing to me. I believe it has something to do with the way we perceive reality space and time.
      Reality: we live it .
      Space: we occupy it.
      Time: we take it .
It's about slowing down when need be and taking time and taking care to mind our space and those things that are near it .

I am not of Native descent but of Irish descent but hearing things like this, it's the drums and the beautiful sounds of this group. I don't know how to explain it but it makes me feel a certain way that no other music can. I guess the best I can put it is it makes me feel powerful but at peace at the same time.

I'm a caucasian man who lives in Minnesota. During orientation for college, the school board did an official acknowledgement of Native American history and the importance of the land to the Indigenous people. Before the acknowledgement, they had a drumming group come out and play some of the most powerful music I've ever heard. I can't stress enough how awesome it was to see and hear. It's hard to put into words how inspiring it was.
It makes me wish I learned more about Native American cultures (in a way that's not appropriating or fetishizing them). Such powerful voices must not be silenced.
Also, I'd like to appologize if I came across as too self-righteous or uninformed. I really like the drumming and I want to be respectful.

Appropriation occurs when you try to make our traditions/culture anther persons religion. leave the practices where they are. and always give respect to where they originate. literally any man can dance or sing at these. the main thing will always be Respect and reverence. but no actual Native American would oust you for dawning regalia and such for educational reasons or to just be at one with the tradition. (By *actual Native American* I mean one that goes to ceremonies and knows the culture with stories. City natives love to preach on but never actually do anything remotely close to traditions. most often times they get stories wrong and a lot of the rules would be wrong to in addition to not speaking.)

I'm crying, I feel like I've never felt this intimate with music, I feel endlessly attached, this is insanely liberating. I'm Native American myself but I grew up with a very white group of people, surrounded by everything and everyone white, and never got the chance to connect with my roots, my ancestors and my back stories. As a kid I felt so different from all my white friends, they feel differently, they see differently and most of all they don't get confronted with the rooted pain we all carry with us every day. From the woman I am today, I've never been more proud to be part of this indigenous culture. I admire it, the soul connection is so vivid and clear for me. This journey of getting to know who I really am, and where I come from just started, but I can't wait when it will step by step complete me, because it's saving me and I will never stop learning, connecting deeply with my beautiful culture and passing it to all the lives I may bring on this momma earth. ❤

Hello, Tenredips. I once read that Eastern Natives, from Massachusetts actually, were taken and sold, after wars with the English Pilgrims and Puritans. King Philip's War, especially. They were rounded up, put on ships, and were taken all the way to Morocco,as slaves. Women, kids, thousands of miles from American shores. No doubt they were forced to stay, being in servitude by that time. I can't say, I don't know you,of course, but it's possible you may have some family lines from that region. DNA test would prove this, one way or another. Being even distantly related, this indeed would move you deep down. So it's a possibility. It's worth looking into. It may explain why you connected so strongly. You can Google King Philip's War. His name was Metacomet,I think. The English called him Philip.
