This is the best "Clear" video I've seen with good lighting and I've saved it to my Favorites. I'll be coming back to view later because I'm picking up an alternator tomorrow for my 2003 Neon SXT. Thank You for a great video on the neon, TH-cam is the best thing to ever happen to a "back yard" mechanic like myself.

wow, I'm not mechanically inclined and have no idea what I'm doing fixing things on my car but this video made it a lot easier to do. I think it's gteat that you gave the size to use as well as locations of the bolts to remove. My friend helping me was impressed that I didn't have to ask his help on this one. I'd recommend watching anything you put out for help. Thanks for your help for us backyard mechanics.

Thanks for a great video. Tried to do this with the car on ramps and couldn't get the darn thing out. Saw how it came out up on the jack with the axle out of the way, put it on a jack and out it came. Your video saved me a lot of aggravation (and curses)!

Thanks a million for this video. It was very helpful. Spot on the money. Haven't done one before, and my son in law and I did it last night following your video. It took us 4 hours, but a lot of that time was looking for told I needed, but mostly tools I sat down and couldn't remember where they were. lol The minor spot where you forgot to mention to take off the belt didn't effect us at all. The one hiccup I had was reinstalling the mounting bracket. I learned not to use an impact when reinstalling the bracket. I used the impact and the bolt head twisted right off. lessons learned. We dealt with that and pushed on. Also the continual mention of what size boltheads was extremely handy. I'm terrible with guessing the size wrench or socket I'll need, so that saved us untold amounts of time. Keep up the great work. I've subscribed to your channel, so I can continue learning with my mechanic endeavors. Thanks again, David

I have an 05 neon that has problems with the lights fluctuating and the rpms dropping almost like the engine is hesitating. This problem gets worse if you turn on the headlights, heater, defrost, stereo, etc.. The symptoms improve while revving the engine though. I have replaced the battery and cleaned the terminals could this be a bad alternator?

Thanks this video helped a lot got the job done for a first timer on this car.. but at 5:30 the adjuster bolt doesnt need to be removed just adjusted to add slack or tighten the belt . Once the bracket at 6:50 is off you can just wiggle it off the bolt at the top of altenator that was at 5:30 it will fall right off.

Thank you so much. Went exactly as you depicted it. One question however is on the tension for the belt. I think I had overtighted it a touch and was getting a ticking sound (I witnessed new alternator being tested so I can rule out bad alternator) Ticking went away when I released a bit of tension. Just double checking that it would be a cause of the noise and not something else. Thank you again!

Do you know why my daughters 2000 Neon with a 2.0 engine would have a single groove V-belt pulley? The belt goes around the large crank pulley as far as I can tell. The replacement alternator has a serpentine type pulley. Nobody at the parts store can find any info on the V- pulley. I hope I can swap the pulleys when I install the new alternator! Thanks for any light you may have on this question!

Hey rich, wow! That negative terminal on the back of the alternator is tuff! I probably should not have loosened everything first while I struggled with it. I think I'll put the positive harness on first then slip up the Alternator to the top then do the Negative terminal underneath the harness.

Thanks for the help. My alternator turns freely and has always worked just fine. I believe the broken belt may be my only problem. Do I need to remove the serpentine belt to get the new belt on? Could you please give me a brief description of how to do this?

Thanks for pointing out the metric nut sizes as you went along. I read a few columns on changing the alternator on my daughters Neon, and NOBODY mentioned the whole job is done with metric tools! I was only able to look at the situation since I didn't bring any metric tools with me. On my way back to her place tomorrow with the right tools now! Can anyone shed light on why the old alternator has a single V- belt pulley, vs the wide serpentine pulley on the new alternator I bought for a 2000 2.0?

Hey rich this is the same alternator thats in my eclispe, it is much easier to remove the bracket and the alternator as one piece and slide the alternator out with the tires facing forward. Ive done these on many 420a Chrysler motors and they are much faster this way plus the alternator wont just fall down

  • @BillMcGirr

AWESOME VIDEO....could'nt have done it without this.
Took me about 3 hours including back and forth to computer AND going to auto zone.
Did it with only the stock neon jack and some concrete blocks for added safety.
Very tight underneath but...I'm skinny........A bit claustrophobic.
Got friend to hold alternator instead of using dowel....easier.
Hardest part is tension bolt...I had to take it out to remove....hard to get back together.
Video pop up says you dont have to remove.

Don't see many compact cars with OHV engines, eh? In the 87 honda civic, they had the nerve to put the alternator right under the master brake cylinder. Very tight squeeze to loosen and almost impossible to pivot for belt tension.

The one drawback with every Neon owner I know...Chrysler/Dodge made absolutely no provisions for repair clearence on these damn cars...Everything in that engine compartment is cramped in there, thus making replacement of components such as the alternator or water pump a major chore...

I notice that when you pointed out the 3 15 mm bolts for the mounting bracket that you removed 2 of them by hand... obviously you loosened them before hand. But thats nothing, i noticed that you only showed the removal of those 2, the 3rd which is just a bit higher up from the 2 you removed by hand, is already missing by the time you started removing the 2 bolts by hand... how did you get that bolt out? Ive tried 2 different size socket wrenches with 4 different size extensions, deepwell and standard, and i cant anything in there from the bottom

How much would your average shop charge to remove and reinstall an alternator? I'm looking into getting one, andthe amplifier will be 1200 rms so it would be a good idea to replace the alt with a high output alternater and I'm curious as to how much it may be?( apart from buying the highoutput alt)

Will this work for the 2000-2003 PT Cruisers? I have a limited non-turbo 01 and my battery light keeps coming on even with a new battery. I tried jump starting the car before the new battery and once the cables where removed it would die; i just thought its cause the old battery was frozen up.

    • @CarbonGlassMan
      @CarbonGlassMan 10 ปีที่แล้ว

I know your comment is 2 months old, but I am trying to figure this out now. I have a 2000 Neon and a 2001 PT Cruiser. The PT had the battery light coming on after a few seconds of running. I took the alternator off and had it tested. It's bad. The Neon alternator looks the same, but from what I've found, the Neon one is an 85 amp alternator and the PT one is 120 amp. I'm not sure why the PT needs that many amps if the one on the Neon doesn't (It's basically the same motor). I know the PT has power windows & locks, but it's not like you constantly run the windows up and down.
