Welcome to the official TH-cam channel of The Monkees, home of 60s chart-topping hits “Last Train To Clarksville,” “I’m A Believer” and “Daydream Believer,” as well as multi-platinum, #1 albums ‘The Monkees,’ ‘More of the Monkees,’ ‘Headquarters’ and ‘Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd.’
Monkee-mania began in Los Angeles in 1965 when Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, the late Peter Tork and the late Davy Jones were cast in the eponymous television series about a struggling rock band inspired by The Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night. The quartet brought a singular mix of pop, rock, psychedelia, Broadway and country to their resulting music. By the time the series aired its final episode on March 25, 1968, The Monkees had sold 16 million albums and 7.5 million singles. Few could have predicted the impact The Monkees would have on music and pop culture at large, one that still reverberates more than 50 years later.

Seeing Davy and Charlie together, not just making music but demonstrating their very real friendship and the mutual respect between them, as well as Davy introducing Charlie as a teacher and mentor who everyone could learn from, must have been tremendously uplifting in 1968.

@krhetor when I met Davy I asked him about that segment because I was wondering about the song he and Charlie sang. He said that song was never completed and never recorded for any album. .... I am 41 years old.... I’ve worked with people in my life like Glen Campbell , Leon Russell, Johnny Cash, Herbie Mann.... and today. Yes today marks the first ever monkeys episode I have ever seen...
what was I doing my whole life to have missed what gems these shows actually are.
My apologies to you guys.. “The Monkeys” for not taking the time to actually see why, your shows “are” the icons they still are today. Hats off to you gentlemen.

The Smalls bit and the Zappa segment at the beginning of the next episode give us some idea of how the show could have gone if the producers had alowed their stars to make the format changes they'd wanted. It would have been quite ahead of it's time (foreshadowing the comedy & music shows that would be so popular by 1975). It also could have garnered The Monkees some respect from their harsher critics, and allowed the guys to use their celebrity status to introduce up-and-coming performers who inspired them. It's just a shame the producers didn't have more foresight.

If you watch carefully during "The Door Into Summer" sequence when Davy Jones throws the tambourine on the stage bits of it went everywhere & actually hit Mike Nesmith's lower left leg!, he continually kept playing in pain trying not to show the agony, it also featured a black American musician at the end of the episode which was a first for the changing times of the late 60's... groundbreaking indeed!

This is one of the best episodes, demonstrates what great TV comedians the Monkees were as well. Also whenever Davy was the lead actor in an episode like this, the energy and performance level seemed to raise up a few notches. His comedic delivery in this episode made me lmao. A truly seasoned veteran stage actor at a young age, knew how to go for the laughs with great timing. Even during the song at the end, dancing with Peter, singing in Mike's ear, or earlier trying to get off stage in drag.

Davy considering the difference between black soul and white soul with none other than Charlie Smalls! Gender roles. Racial understanding. In the 1960s. Both conveniently camouflaged in ridiculous Borscht-belt comedy that even your grandma could relate to at the time. These guys were more important than the Beatles. I'll fight you on this.

Interesting Trivia here: The fellow in charge of the contest with the Monkees at the start of the show is Jerry Blavat, who was an expert in pop music, was a radio DJ, and was prominent in the Philadelphia musical scene. I've met Jerry many times over the years when I lived in Philly. For most of Jerry's adult life, he had Mob connections, first with Angelo Bruno, the Godfather of the Philadelphia-New Jersey turf. And then after Angelo was assassinated, he was aligned with Phil Testa before he was taken out too. Finally, he was tight with the new Philly boss Nicky Scarfo. In May 1981, at the Meletis Greek restaurant in South Philadelphia, Jerry Blavat joined Mob captain Raymond Martorano for dinner with Chelsais "Stevie" Bouras, who was involved in narcotics distribution for the Mob, along with his girlfriend Janette Curro. The dinner and meeting, largely a "social" one, didn't last long. Suddenly a gunman appeared at the table, motioned Martorano and others to move aside and began blasting. Tragically the hit on Chelsais Bouras also took out Bouras’s girlfriend, Janette Curro. Martorano and Blavat were wounded.

I remember this episode well from when I was 12 years old, and the 2nd big wave of Monkeemania suddenly broke out around their 20th Anniversary tour in '86 (minus Nesmith, who chose to sit it out). As a result, EVERY local TV station began broadcasting syndicated re-runs of this show (as MTV had already started doing at the beginning of said year), radio put their songs into heavy rotation all over again, and they started re-appearing in the pages of 16, Teen Beat, Bop! (and other such magazines) alongside modern-day Teen/'Tween Idols like Kirk Cameron and Corey Feldman! Anyway, my sisters and I would catch back-to-back episodes of those re-runs every day after school (rushing home as fast as we could to do so), as well as the frequent marathons on MTV during weekends. Otherwise, I only now made the connection that Deana Martin was the fantastically striking brunette "boy" singer in the other mixed "group" on this particular episode. Alas, I'm also every bit as curious now (as I was then) as to who her equally HOTT "bandmates" were (especially the "drummer"). As for the restoration of the show itself, I have to likewise agree that it IS stunning beyond belief!

    • @merriemisfit8406
      @merriemisfit8406 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I remember the Monkees also from the 1980s resurgence. In the fall of 1986, in Los Angeles, the show was airing on weekday mornings at the time I had to travel to school. So I'd take the portable RCA black-and-white and plug it in the lighter. Very poor reception, but it was better than nothing. Lots of engine-running static in that Ford EXP.
While I was watching this episode here on TH-cam, it occurred to me that -- this may be the first time I've seen it in color! I've seen PARTS of it, random clips, in color before, but we had only black and white telly at my house until the end of 1988 (1988? 1988??? YES 1988!), and that's how I saw complete Monkees episodes. Much like many people probably did the first time through, twenty years earlier!
P.S. The girl drummer appeared in a lot of episodes. Either the imdb or some Monkees fansite must have the answer to her identity. She reminds me of Julie Christie, who had just recently won the Best Actress Oscar, so the look must have been a great help to her in getting work ... at least for a few years.

Same here; I was 12, in the summer of '86. They came back to TV, to kick of the reunion tour, Memorial Day, and by summer, I was watching it daily. Was bummed not to see it, once school started back up, but then I caught it at a friend's house, weeknights, on MTV, in the evening. It didn't matter that I'd seen every episode, 3 times, already.

Became a disc jockey in 1960 and had a nationally syndicated TV dance show, _"The Discophonic Scene" (1960)_, and talk show, "Jerry' s Place" (1960), in the 1960s. having seen 4k titles recently with HDR, I'd drool over how well this show would look in 4k if rescanned. most TV shows are remastered in 2k and movies in 4k, 8k is too resource-hungry right now, and that resolution would be better suited for huge auditorium displays.

BRAVO! Thank you all so very, very much for taking all the time to do this! And I am sooooo looking forward to "GOOD TIMES!"
Thanks to Andrew and John and everyone involved in preserving and restoring these timeless and unique episodes for future fans, but you are also creating new chapters in their recording career. I am so amazed and astounded as to what you have all done. Timeless music.
Micky, Davy, Mike and Peter have given me and millions of others so many songs and memories that will last our whole lives.

I thought he was heading the project; hiring who he needed, and deciding on all the extras, and if the final restored quality was good enough. ;)
