I was in high school when this first came out in the U.S. I immediately loved it and still do. It's absolutely a fantastic groove song. I love this rendition by Vinai T. Go to the guitar shop. Even if you can't play yet, spend an hour or so there and try a whole different range of guitars. Find the one with the sound that you like in the price range you want. No one can tell you what guitar is best for you, because musical instruments are deeply personal choice. Every one has it's own unique sound. For me, it's the muted warm Jazz guitars, for others it's the bell sound of of a Stratocaster. The only way to know, is to plug a alot in and try them. Talk to the guy in the store, explain to him you don't know what you like yet, and you want to try some. He gets this all the time n will help you choose. Same with Amps. Valve amps have a warmer sound than the digital amps. Both have their place, it depends on the sound you want/like.

If you want to play jazz any Fender-ish clean amp will do, esp the twin reverb or deluxe reverb type,....
and as for guitar it depends on your budget, if budget isn't a problem then go for Gibson ES, Heritage guitar, Eastman or Ibanez George Benson/Pat Metheny/Lee Ritenour Signature,...
If you have budget constraint you can go for cheaper Epiphone / Ibanez models. i personally bought Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor II and that's nice guitar for the money,...
and makes sure you always try every guitar available before you buy,...
