- Kenneth Varner performs Grand Chorus by Theodore Dubois on the 5 manual Allen digital organ at Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, TN. This is from a CD recording that I happened upon by accident, after having been curious about this instrument for many years.
In the interests of changing things up a bit sometimes, I thought I would share this one.
Allen is my least favorite of digital organs, and generally loathe the sound but I give credit where it is due and this instrument doesnt sound bad. In fact I like the sound of this one. The organist does a superb job and performance on this album.
I also posted this because this piece was performed on the Hazel Wright Organ with Fred Swann and Chris Pardini many years ago. Enjoy!
This is truly an amazing instrument. In response to SotreeDenson's reply, my church (nationwide) has moved away from the organ. The organ in my congregation - now only played for the opening hymn - has given way to two pianos in the sanctuary. Almost all our music is contemporary. Sure, beautiful piano arrangements are welcome, but a piano is always... just a piano. In contrast, our sister churches in Germany have ordered over 16 custom Allen organs. I'm jealous!

Amazing recording! Kenneth Varner was the organist at Bellevue and designed this instrument to be the largest Allen organ ever built. Sadly the church doesn't use it anymore and the service is flooded with contemporary music causing Rev. Varner to be at another church.

@@mountedcornetv9506 They stopped using their organ when the former Minster of Music retired in 2005. The organ does look nice in pictures and in sound but the specifications of this organ are quite absurd.

@@StoreeDenson and on a recent webcast of a service, I left a comment asking about it and got a reply of “its a wonderful instrument we use it occasionally”.
@@StoreeDensonit’s an electronic organ. It needs to be trashed. Any electronic organ is absurd.

I guess it’s safe to say this congregation is full rock-n-roll music now in the services? We call it the “7-11” music…repeat the same 7 words, 11 times.
Allen is the least realistic of all the digital organs. I’m learning more about Hauptwerk and the sound there is amazing. It’s like the real instrument in the actual venue.
