In his own liner notes from this very album, Mr. Biggs stated that the original recording was made in the spring of 1953. It is quite possible that he might have re-recorded the Fugue a year later. Sadly, owing to a dispute with G. Donald Harrison, the head of Aeolian-Skinner, the other works which he did record at that time were never released, and he did not make ANY further recordings at Methuen until late 1975--AFTER both Harrison and Aeolian-Skinner had given up the proverbial ghost! (The master tapes of the other recordings from the 1953 sessions re in the E. Power Biggs Collection at Boston University.)

This is truly an amazing instrument. In response to SotreeDenson's reply, my church (nationwide) has moved away from the organ. The organ in my congregation - now only played for the opening hymn - has given way to two pianos in the sanctuary. Almost all our music is contemporary. Sure, beautiful piano arrangements are welcome, but a piano is always... just a piano. In contrast, our sister churches in Germany have ordered over 16 custom Allen organs. I'm jealous!

Its nice to see this organ is still there and in use. I heard at one time some bozos wanted to get rid of it.

This was a beautiful organ, i wanted to play this one day, since the renovation and them painting the swell boxes all white it has taken the true contrast away from the pipes, the whole organ looks the same now..

He should have used the score and a page turner. He is a fine organist, but he got lost a number of times and had to make up sections til he memory reappeared. With the score he probably would have played note perfect!

The whole point of 'Amazing Grace' is that it's a simple, humble, song. This arrogant, over the top version is an abomination.

Allen is the least realistic of all the digital organs. I’m learning more about Hauptwerk and the sound there is amazing. It’s like the real instrument in the actual venue.

Perhaps Tom Leonard (& friends) would be more accurate. 😅 L

Fred always apologized for this piece before playing it--"It has no musical value whatsoever... but it's fun to watch." Indeed, it is. And I think if we agree that one of the purposes of music is to provide uplift....the work succeeds! Great view of a great virtuoso having fun!

Awful organ. Sounds electronic. This electronic crap is nothing to shove around and be proud of.

I love the piece but it was played many times before and I think he played it beautifully left that instrument rumble and blew my mind literally!!!

What the? I'm one minute in and wondering why my brain is melting. Pray I make it to the end. I'm sure the pedal scales will be perfect (least of my concerns....)

With the latest restoration Ruffatti added a 64’ reed? In the final I seem to hear it.

I'm so glad the new church invested the money to keep this marvelous gift alive and well for current and future generations: money WELL spent!

Amazing recording! Kenneth Varner was the organist at Bellevue and designed this instrument to be the largest Allen organ ever built. Sadly the church doesn't use it anymore and the service is flooded with contemporary music causing Rev. Varner to be at another church.

sounds like they cleaned up the organ nicely..... I read that it was a mess, in disrepair & neglect.... but, for God's sakes: why one single still? This is TH-cam -- **VIDEOS** -- just prop your cell phone somewhere and record it. It's 2023 and it's one of the top three organs in the World -- don't half-ass it already. Very disappointing.

quite a marvelous organ!

A poor performance overall, the spectacular fireworks at the end notwithstanding. He plays fistfuls of wrong notes, especially in the opening section, and in the quieter middle section, he seemingly forgets how it goes entirely and desperately busks from memory until he manages to pick it up again. He has real capability, but he evidently hadn't done enough practice to be secure in performing this notoriously challenging piece, especially from memory.

When was this recorded ? If the recording is from before 1933, this is very likely not the organ as it was in Franck's time. Tournemire had the instrument modified and enlarged in 1933. Franck played a 46 stop instrument, Tournemire had it enlarged by Joseph Beuchet to 56 stops, mainly in the 'récit'. It has now 71 stops.

WOW! I recall Disney's use of this and have heard multiple orchestral versions. This transcription is almost dead on. I noticed the giant score he uses also - good eyes. As a hobbiest, this mafe my day.

This is an insanely difficult work, especially on an organ you’re not familiar with. It is played very well, but I have to be the bad guy and say that you’re playing far too fast to handle this piece. I know this piece forwards and backwards you’re going way too fast and you can’t handle it, when you’re playing on this organ in this venue and you miss as much as you have you need to read it back. And it sounds like there was a major temperature change in the cathedral. The organ is definitely not sounding as well as it normally does but by no means a bad performance this could’ve been a lot better.
