The orbital night-cloak is actually a really smart and practical superweapon. The big problem was the execution. But the ability to cause a planet to go from a vibrant world to a frozen husk is terrifying. Sure, blowing up a planet or continent is also scary, but you don't have to live after that. With the nightcloak, you have to deal with the fact that there's no daylight(which kills off most plant life, which kills off most herbivores, which kills off most carnivores), your food is dwindling, your seas are freezing, and whatever light you can find won't last forever.
Just a reminder - Courtship of Princess Leia PREDATES the X-Wing books by a couple years, especially the Aaron Allston/Wraith Squadron books in which he appears. He was meant to be a one-off villain for Courtship, but proved popular enough that he made it into the X-Wing series as the primary villain for Wraith Squadron.
I read the german version as well and wasn't the space around the planet full of docks with the Iron Fist being in repair after the last X-Wing book and Zsinj using a regular ISD as his temporary command ship?
Fipse Thats what i remember aswell. Zsinj using a huge spacedock/Repairyard around Dathomir to repair the heavily damaged Iron Fist while being onboard a normal ISD. I could also sweaf that the Iron Fist never got repaired completely and got just shot to scrap still helpless without weapons & shields after Zsinj was killed.
I know this would be difficult, but can you breakdown what is by far the largest space battle in the whole franchise? *The* *Battle* *of* *Yuuzhan'tar!* I have made this request: twenty-five times.
I love me some Hapan Battle Dragons! They're such a neat, characterful design that immediately says a lot about the Hapes Consortium. So much so that it's a shame that the other Hapes ships didn't more closely follow its design philosophy.
Courtship may be one of the more ridiculous EU books, but it's also one of the better ones IMO. I love when 3P0 sings his song *The Virtues of King Han Solo* and then later on they catch Leia humming it to herself. I also really enjoy the hunt fur Zsinj. I think it might be my favorite thing from the old EU and I wish there was more of it.
Idea: do an episode where you describe your “perfect fleet”, with access to ships from Star Wars, Halo, Mass Effect, and/or other sci-fi universes. (15th try)
Great video! Two things you missed, though..... 1. The Hapans used X-Wings in addition to their own starfighter design, the Miy'til class. 2. Zsinj used Dathomir as an orbital fleet repair base. Part of Han's battle tactics was to maneuver through the repair yards to get close to the Iron Fist. Han also used this tactic at the beginning to evade Zsinj and get to Dathomir's surface. Keep up the great work!
I always liked Zsinj (and I especially liked the Wraith squadron stuff) because his entire run was him being clever, and then him getting beaten by others being clever. There was very little in the way of luck in those books, baring the capture of the Night Crawler. He built himself up, took on both the imperials and the republic, eventually bit off more than he could chew, and then got outplayed at the end. He was over-confidant, but for good reason unlike most.
@@declanbennett1085 Indeed. He was not stupidly overconfident. Overconfident, but just by a bit not by much. And also unlike a lot of other imperials you could see why he commanded such loyalty because he was tough but also fair. He never executed anyone for trying their best but failing only for dishonesty and concealing failure instead of owning up to it. It is also why the New Republic and other warlords saw him as such a threat. He could win.
I never understand why they did not capture the Iron Fist. She was effectively crippled (having lost her command tower, possibly even several secondary systems due to the proton torpedos) could not flee into hyperspace and was trapped between Dathomir and the Joint Republican/Hapan fleet. So why not force the ship to surrender? Never read the book so maybe I am missing some key element here, but it just seems like a waste to me.
I'm pretty sure Zsinj is said to have at least HAD an SSD, with Han thinking it destroyed. The novel may have been unclear on what showed up later though. It's been quite a while since I last read it.
Zsinj actually had at one point in time two SSDs (though only briefly), the Iron Fist and another one called Razor´s Kiss, which he stole from Kuat. The latter was sabotaged by a covert ops team of the Wraith Squadron during the Kuat mission and was subsequently destroyed. After that, Zsinj collected the remains and later used them during a battle with Han Solo´s battlegroup to fake the destruction of the Iron Fist. If I remember correctly, he utilized a stealth ship (which had the remains of the Razor´s Kiss attached to its hull) to hide the Iron Fist, which then jumped into Hyperspace. Meanwhile, the stealth ship destroyed itself, throwing what remained of the Razor´s Kiss in all directions. So when republic scout ships scoured the battlefield in the aftermath of the fight, they found debris from a SSD. Coincidentally, Zsinj had the remains of the RK plastered with the name "Iron Fist" and one of the pieces survived the self-destruction more or less intact, leading the Republic to believe that Zsinj had lost his remaining SSD. In truth, the Iron Fist was still intact, although heavily damaged and retreated to Dathomir for repairs.
No, it was the SSD Iron Fist. The Victory class Iron Fist (after Zsinj got promoted) ended up in the unknown regions under some other commander. I think the reason the Hapans didn't care to salvage it was that they didn't like the class, and were under command of a frankly irrational prince. I mean, at the beginning of the novel the "poor" worlds of the consortium were said to be giving ISDs as their contribution to the dowry (despite ISD's outclassing both Battle Dragon and Nova vessels) so its pretty clear they prefer their homegrown classes over imperial salvage. Another thing is it isn't as easy as you'd think to salvage viable hulls in star wars (The loss of the Razors Kiss would be a good parallel). With the reactors and fuel reserves taking up a huge portion of the hull, by the time you've defanged a capital ship you've probably crippled it beyond repair. The Lusankya SSD took something like 5 years (and that was considered a short timeframe) to get combat ready again, and it only had to deal (mostly) with strikes by startfighter grade munitions.
Zsinj was created in this book and, with the OK from the author, reused and fleshed out to what we know from the X-Wing novels. This book is what we have to thank or an enemy as interesting as Zsinj in the first place. And the tactics for destroying a SSD were correct: tons of proton torpedoes and focused turbo laser fire from multiple sides. Better tactics than in The Last Jedi.
Vastly powerful capital ship! Thousands of crew-members! Huge firepower! Crippled by a single ship with a crew of two in only two hits. Yes, the Super Star Destroyer, and all Star Wars capital ships by extension, is worth the investment. It totally makes sense to build and staff these things. Seriously?! What the heck is wrong with Star Wars? Why does anyone build capital ships? They're just expensive targets!
the issue is the Iron Fist was prety much doomed before the shot. Zisinj was truying to rebuild his forces after a crippling loss and the Fist was damage in that battle. so with him dead tghe Iron Fist lost it's last chance to pull somethign off and was thus battered to death.
This is inaccurate. Iron Fist was still badly damaged from the battle of Selegis. It was in dock for repair to its hull, engines and shields. It was strafed by Song of War in dock and was not anywhere near battle ready when the Hapans arrived. Further all of Iron Fist's TIEs had been lost back at Selegis.
I feel like there’s a much easier way to achieve what the nightcloak was meant to achieve. Just put a giant disc between the planet and it’s Star, and have that disc move as the planet orbits, keeping the planet in endless night. That’s a much easier thing to do than having satellites going around the whole planet
The satellites would mostly be on one half on the planet mostly and what you described is what they are but they absorb instead of block, even jamming sensors. A real way for a planet to respond would be having starfighters unless those are destroyed
How about a breakdown of taking down the World Devastators? Or the battle at Xizor's Skyhook in Shadows of the Empire (any version since there's the book, video game, and comic version)? Or some Yuzhan Vong War battles?

When I read the book I always pronounced it Zinsij. I know and knew it is incorrect but I had no idea how to say that wierd name. So I created my own pronunciation
I am all for any storyline that gives us the nightsisters. As far as I'm concerned there is no such thing as too many Dathomirians, Zabracks, or Mandalorians.
Thanks, when I read The Courtship of Princess Leia, I had read the Xwing books but was confused whether the SSD Iron Fist was there, or his regular (victory) star destroyed. Thanks again!

Lot of notes here. Zsinj and Iron Fist were already above Dathomir they didn't arrive. Iron Fist was in dock being repaired after the severe damage it received at the battle of Selegis. The SSD also had no TIEs left as they had been sacrificed in the escape from Selegis so the SSD was already at a severe disadvantage and is why Zsinj pulled TIEs from surrounding ISDs. Zsinj couldn't afford to lose his secret shipyard at Dathomir since it was the only one that could repair his SSD so he called in reinforcements instead of fleeing initially. His fleet numbered around 20 star destroyers and the badly damaged Iron Fist against 70 Hapan captured star destroyers and twice that number of battle dragons. Once they trapped Zsinj with the mines the outcome was never in doubt. Han used the tractor to get pulled under the shield of the SSD, then torpedo the beam projector and terrain flew to the bridge torping it and killing the Warlord eliminating coordination of Zsinj fleet. Finally the Falcon was captured by the Nightsisters not the Empire.
Knower of truth I know the Spartans will beat the N7s but the question is at what cost as the N7s have the same equipment, abilities, and probability even experienced but N7s greatest asset is team work as a Spartan so the N7s would already know to how the Spartans tech and abilities but the Spartans wouldn’t know what the N7s abilities are. In a one on one fight the Spartans would win but in a squad vs squad fight the N7s would probably win.
100% American Buffalo no Spartans have advantage in every way m8 and sending out a squad of them more or less spells doom for anyone the receiving end unless it's a Spartan 4 then it's a toss in the air.
Honestly, I think the Orbital Nightcloak is actually a good idea. Short of some kind of ground-to-orbit shotgun or a Jedi using the force, there's no way to take it out without already having assets in orbit to do so. It's not so much a super weapon as it is a siege fortification. The problem is really how it was deployed.
Its way too vulnerable. Any random starfighter could easily disable the whole thing. If the enemy planet has literally no capacity to defend itself from orbital attacks whatsoever, you could accomplish the same thing with orbital bombardment. If the Nightcloak didnt have the whole 'a single satellite loss disables the entire network' clause it would be fine.
Idea for a versus episode. Havoc squad at the time of the battle Alderaan VS torrent company of the 501st at the time of the battle of kamino. Would love to see this thanks
Hihi. Recently subscribed, been binge watching videos. I also recently started playing Thrawn's revenge. I never really got into the post Endor star wars legends, I was always all about the old republic stuff. But I am playing Thrawns revenge and I dont know anything about any of the factions or the characters and context T_T. I wish there was a video that briefly summarized each faction (hint hint) X3
Funny that I just finished this book not too long ago and man was it weird. Everyone was acting out of character but that did give me a few good laughs at times.
So sad so many of these Executor Class SSDs went down like a joke. Not even taking two or three fleets with them with the amount of firepower they have. Even in Empire at War, going Gung Ho with the Executor isn’t as punishing as long as Anti Fighter ships are around it.
When speaking about Legends, it is fairly easily believable, especially compared to the Disney Canon Nonsense of a Very Agressive, then Extremely Passive, New Republic.
Hey EckhartsLadder love your on how WARLORD ZSINJ died. But anyway here what i like to see in you next video (26th request) 1 CAS Class Assault Carrier with 4 CSS Class Battlecruisers and 4 SDV-class heavy corvettes VS 1 Bellator Class Super Star Destroyer (yes i look it up and the Bellator Class has Fighters about 100 of them) 4 Imperial 2 class Star Destroyers and 4 Dreadnought Class Heavy cruisers (theses ships use to be Victory 2 class Star Destroyers but that would give the Empire too much an edge in the battle so i made them Dreadnought class Heavy cruisers instated too make it equal in a way)
Why do SSD's suck so much? I mean whats the point of building something that large and having that much shields and armor if it gets destroyed in one shot.
How come Commanders don’t position their ships above the enemy and point the nose down on the enemy? It seems like most ships are designed to fight on the same 3D plane, so why wouldn’t this would be a useful tactic?
There’s no way the planet in the thumbnail is Dathomir A: It has green on it B: It’s not trying to end my life Also: Zing using that super weapon on Dathomir probably only made the planet nicer to live on
@EckhartsLadder This battle happened over Dathomir, correct? What were the night sisters doing? Watching and seeing the battle and saying, “oooooh, ahhhh”?

The orbital night-cloak is actually a really smart and practical superweapon. The big problem was the execution. It would be nice if Star Wars would release pronunciation guides. I had no idea how "Zsinj" was pronounced until now.
When I read the book I always pronounced it Zinsij. I know and knew it is incorrect but I had no idea how to say that wierd name. So I created my own pronunciation
Watching this while playing as Zsinj in Empire at War.
I'm reminded of the plot to Spaceballs as I listened to this.
>Recommending people read Courtship of Princess Leia
Easy there Marka Ragnos
Great video Eckhart's.
DO A VIDEO ON THE NEW SPACE FORCE AND WHAT AN IDEAL MODERN SPACE FORCE WOULD LOOK LIKE
You'd better have talk about previous clashes between General Solo and Warlord Zsinj.
Whenever I get to the end of one of your videos, I always say to myself "Yeah, slap that puppy, there's music in there."
Great upload, Though I'd like to politely request a battle breakdown of;
Battle of Tukayyid
Siege of Autobot City
Assault on a baoa qu (UC 079)
After watching one of your videos I got hooked! Love the content and been binging the videos recently, keep up the great work! - A new subscriber
Battle of Umbara breakdown. I don't know how much information there is on this but it would be awesome to see! :)
Eck, in my Thrawns Revenge Campaign I used a Sovereign and a bunch of Victories to do so.
Hey ekharts when I tried to download empire at war it's gives me the golden addition
Why the Empire use super star destroyers? Which can be destroyed by a single fighter.
The fighters need reinforced plot shields to destroy Super Star Destroyers.
Spartans vs N7 and UNSC Marines vs System Alliance Marines
100% American Buffalo You forgot Space Marines as well
100% American Buffalo Spartans stomp no contest
I wish there was a game where you could command your own fleet and battle stuff
It looks so easy to build those monster capital ships.
Every day i discover about a new one and how it was destroyed here lul.
Zsinj: aaaaahhhhhh let's destroy this planet.
Rebel fleet:........... *HELLO THERE!!!!!!!*
great vid man loved it
Y'all gotta do something with the Descent: Freespace universe.
Shivans are just too cool.
I want to read the Star Wars books and comics when I'm an adult I'm probity going to Oder them online or see if they have them in a library
I fucking love the doggo abuse outro
Damn I loved that book. But don't know why i imagined the Hapes king looking like a Noghri xD
*Zoom in on face* Dastardly Warlord Zsinj.
*twirls mustache*
Could the First Order in Star killer defend themselves from a 318 meter tall Godzilla Earth?
Dope battle.
Idea for a versus episode. Havoc squad at the time of the battle Alderaan VS torrent company of the 501st at the time of the battle of kamino. Would love to see this thanks
You should do a battle breakdown of the assault of komino from the force unleashed 2
2:10 So kind of like the system they used in SBY to launch asteroids into Earth.
If they do a Solo 2 they should make Zsinj the main antagonist
Ironic, he could fund an entire fleet, but couldn't buy a vowel
Easy, I hyperspaced all of my ships behind him and launched all fighters. That's also how I beat the Reaper as the NR too.
always sad to see an ssd going down, such magnificent creatures
Luvley outro
Analyze the first space battle in Hier to the Empire.
Also, where can i find the books of the new canon on epub/pdf ? I haven't found only the 270 old cannon books
So sad so many of these Executor Class SSDs went down like a joke. Not even taking two or three fleets with them with the amount of firepower they have. Even in Empire at War, going Gung Ho with the Executor isn’t as punishing as long as Anti Fighter ships are around it.
The king Raven from Gears of War vs the uh-144 falcon from halo reach (if it hasn't been done already)
When speaking about Legends, it is fairly easily believable, especially compared to the Disney Canon Nonsense of a Very Agressive, then Extremely Passive, New Republic.
Hey EckhartsLadder love your on how WARLORD ZSINJ died.
But anyway here what i like to see in you next video
(26th request) 1 CAS Class Assault Carrier with 4 CSS Class Battlecruisers and 4 SDV-class heavy corvettes VS 1 Bellator Class Super Star Destroyer (yes i look it up and the Bellator Class has Fighters about 100 of them) 4 Imperial 2 class Star Destroyers and 4 Dreadnought Class Heavy cruisers (theses ships use to be Victory 2 class Star Destroyers but that would give the Empire too much an edge in the battle so i made them Dreadnought class Heavy cruisers instated too make it equal in a way)
Covenant Fleet snipes
I don't think it would work out that way.
Why do SSD's suck so much? I mean whats the point of building something that large and having that much shields and armor if it gets destroyed in one shot.
the X-wing books were some of my favorites, especially wraith squadron, and I was disappointed that Zsing dies in such a lame way.
still wish you would do this kind of thing for star ship vs with a lot more detal.
How come Commanders don’t position their ships above the enemy and point the nose down on the enemy? It seems like most ships are designed to fight on the same 3D plane, so why wouldn’t this would be a useful tactic?
Replicators vs a Unified Star Wars Universe (All Eras and Races combined)
36th Attempt
Space battle of umbra??????
Fallout prewar America Vs. Brotherhood of Nod at the start of the third Tiberium War
There’s no way the planet in the thumbnail is Dathomir
A: It has green on it
B: It’s not trying to end my life
Also: Zing using that super weapon on Dathomir probably only made the planet nicer to live on
What do you mean trying to end your life
A squad of Asari Commandos versus a squad of Night Sisters
Attempt 23: 2 Harrower Dreadnaughts vs 1 Imperial Star Destroyer
Wait, the Falcon had missiles?
yes
Also represented in the first ‘Rogue Squadron’ N64 videogame as concussion missiles.
In Return of the Jedi too. Usually concussion missiles, but torpedoes in this book.
I can’t imagine Han commanding A fleet, I just can’t
Hey Eck have you ever played SoaSE Rebellion? Specifically the Interregnum Mod that uses a lot of the Canon material from Endor till 9 ABY
Hans Solo prince of Correlia that’s um interesting but the battle does sound kind a cool
@EckhartsLadder This battle happened over Dathomir, correct? What were the night sisters doing? Watching and seeing the battle and saying, “oooooh, ahhhh”?
Do a video on the zinge consortium
