@Madamoizillion Actually 1983 [near the ex-Woodfield Mall, Schaumburg IL] store in our Chicagoland (city & suburbs) area. We likely began the movement, lol. It was started as a means for young aged adults [employees, students etc] with lower incomes to be able to AFFORD furniture that pleased their sensibilities vs. the typical & OVERPRICED furniture styles that proliferated the furniture market which brought an onslaught of other stores with the same intent. It's an urban term, so there are no rules. But for me any of these reasons would void the term hack: 1. You have to buy materials in another shop (beyond screws or hinges) 2. The extra materials cost you more than IKEA stuff 3. You have 3x more work outside of the IKEA assembly 4. You can't see IKEA furniture in the end, you only see what you bought in B&Q (talking about the front, not the paint) Don't get me wrong, I love the end design (otherwise I'd already be dopamining on the next video), I'm just saying why this doesn't count as an IKEA hack for me.
Hmm... Those IKEA units are hollow framed and thin panelled, they're not solid MDF or natural wood. Because of the weight of the doors its guaranteed eventually the doors will sag/drop due to those thin light hinges and because the screw's won't have a natural grip as it's hollow framed and not solid. (Just some constructive feedback)
As a side hobby, I flip my own antique furniture with modern twists and quirky features, but I make sure all my pieces have quality accessories, attachments and features, as people buy my furniture for their businesses, restaurants and homes. Those doors will be quite hefty for the light IKEA frame, so ideally you'd need something like a Continuous hinge or Piano hinge to take the weight with small panel screw's. It's great that people are being creative with basic furniture, but it's also vital that you know and understand the materials you're working with.
So i love the idea of this. My only problem is that the doors are mdf and the sides are mdf. Mdf and lateral twisting forces don't go together because the wood is small partials held together by glue. So the hinges are taking all the weight of the doors so im thinking gravity plus time plus people opening and closing them equals something that comes apart after a few weeks. Please don't fall for this!! I am actually in the process of this flipping as I type this message. 280$ bucks for the unit, wood , primer, paint, legs and door handles wasted!! It would have really helped me if you had mentioned how light weight and empty the insides of the wood on the sides really are. They can't hold weight of any door. I went and bought 3/4th inch mdf pieces for the door. Why? Because I want the hinges to not be visible. And all the invisible hinges require the door to be at least 3/4 of an inch. Turns outs this kallax unit is so delicate that a screw as deep as only 1/4 inch fits. Anything above, the screw wobbles inside and comes off because the inside of the wood is empty. I regret falling for this video and buying the kallax. Should've at least known that the width of the door woods should only be 1/2 inch and that these kallax units are very light weight and not solid but empty in the inside.
It's literally IKEA furniture.. did you think it was solid hardwood or something ?? Lmao. Did you not do ANY research or basic thinking on your own?? It's a less one minute video. How embarrassing.
It's not falling for anything. She made the decisions to use lightweight materials for a reason. 3/4" MDF is heavy as fuck! You picked the wrong materials for the job, and IKEA furniture is not solid wood, MDF or even chipboard. All the panels are essentially hollow
@@urban772 she could have made any decision she wants. All i said was she didn't mention any of these details. What does flip mean? She’s gonna sell it on Craigslist?
@@bbuuttercupp If IKEA made it, it's not perfectly good furniture. It's furniture that should have never been made.
Beautiful result from talented craftsmanship!
This is brilliant! Huge talent! I wish I have someone who can do this for me!
Absolutely love this
Thank you!!
You’ve done a Better job than most tradesmen would do these days.
Wow! That actually came out super nice, AND it doesn't look at all like it was an Ikea Kalax unit.
It is very heartwarming to see a young woman who is not afraid of doing something unfamiliar and doing such a wonderful job. This is actually a real confidence booster.
Thankyou, there really is no reason to start with an IKEA unit. At this point just buy a nice dresser instead
If someone is sharing a video on TH-cam, they need to be cautious with what advice they give , because a lot of ppl will watch. I'm a total beginner to working with wood or IKEA cabinets. All i said was it would have helped if she mentioned how light the doors should be, especially , for a total beginner like me.
I'm sure there are a lot of beginners out there looking to learn from videos like this.
@@saritak4315 fair, however a 45s YT short is not the place to "learn" but could be somewhere to get inspiration. Nowhere does this really come across as advice, more just a list of what she did.
Super rad! Treat yourself to a compound miter saw with a fine tooth blade, your wrist will thank you and you'll be able to cute quite a few more complex miters
Absolutely Gorgeous!!!
It kinda looks like a fancy credenza in a high end office. Awsome job.
You have every reason to be proud. Great job.
You are an artist....streamline this into a gig!
Great job!! If a person is going to buy particle board furniture, and not something made of solid wood, IKEA is the way you go. Their products are pretty well made. Your final result looks great! Lots of work, but so satisfying!
A piece of advice- sand wood before making cuts. Great result though!
that doesn't even make sense... like she was sanding the parts where she cut (because it wasn't smooth obviously).. so how could she sand it before she cuts it?
"What a hack!, easy 5 minute craft"
Paint for melaminate is so exphensive that its cheaper to just buy new furniture . Painting and it resisting are 2 dif things
Still came out better than the original. Which I believe was the point lol
I havead respect for people who take the time to do this stuff❤
NO THE TOO MUCH WEIGHT ON THE HINGES THEY WILL BREAK. CHEAP CARDBOARD FILLED LAMINATE "WOOD" LOL
I said he same thing.
I gonna flip a Ikea table into a snooker table with some green wrapping paper and some recylced foam packaging for cushions. Etsy here I come.
Omg that’s so so so cool!!!!
“And whitewashed them”
This made me laugh so hard because i associate whitewashing with people making black characters white
Sorry, that doesn’t make sense to me. I associate whitewashing with Tom Sawyer painting a fence. Showing my age?
Beautiful!!
Very creative!!
🙏🌷💙🌷🙏
Oh myyyyyyy gosh!!!! That is freaking cuuuuyute!!!!! ✨💕💕
Looks fantastic! I just can’t see in that dimension, the one that lies beyond the beginning but before the end. The part where you come up with the idea, the actual execution of it I can do, but you my dear have a talent! I wonder what your final costs were? As so much of that can be done with recycled furniture.
You’re so creative! Splendid job! Loved this 🎉❤
Hell yea!!! You go girl love your style and energy
