No worries! I am terrible for saying sorry. Even if someone bumps into me I apologise to them...how ridiculous is that?

    • @yoidoretennshi777
      @yoidoretennshi777 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@EnglishLikeANative I don't think it is ridiculous, on the contrary you are considered as a person with good manner and humility. The circumstances can make us understand very easily who was distracted and bumped into another. If this person considers you are responsible for it after hearing your sorry, it means that he/she is dull and/or stupid. This " sorry " is like the lubricating oil of our society to allow it to proceed smoothly. It is not always necessary to regard it as an expression of apology to the letter. We Japanese also use very often the alternative words " Sumimasen" or "Gomennasai" in our language in similar situations and we don't feel ashamed of it at all because these words come out even spontaneously. When people stop saying these words, I am sure that our society will become cold and the human relationship will grow very tense and nervous, bringing even more mental or physical conflicts among people.

interesting topic. Initially I though you were talking about Canadians because being overly polite is a stereotypical characteristic of Canadians. The use of the word "sorry" is pretty much embedded in our vocabulary. Especially when compared to our southern neighbours.

Sensations English is different to any other resource you will find. It’s also been put together by some of the best minds in the teaching industry. The best thing to do is try it out while it is free to everyone. They are gathering information on how students use the site so that they can make further improvements etc, so it’s a great opportunity for students to take advantage of the free offer.

English Like A Native many thanks
Do you have a immersion course for some foreign students? e.g.: some students live together for two or four weeks, a real english life, I suppose it’s amazing way to study real english, you know, we live in a non-english country.
There’s a TH-cam channel named , which has some immersion courses, but the teachers aren’t native english speakers.

I find it's more gender than nationality that prompts people to overuse "sorry". I work with a lot of Eastern European lasses and whether they or I bump into each other, it's them who utter the apology.
Whenever this this occurs I tell them to watch the Anna Kendrick movie a Simple Favour, where her character is a repeat offender in this realm and her blonde mate chastises her for this social faux pas as it makes her come across as meek and timid.

    ﴿وَلَقَد خَلَقنَا الإِنسانَ مِن سُلالَةٍ مِن طينٍ﴾ [المؤمنون: ١٢]
And certainly did We create man from an extract of clay.
    - Saheeh International
    ﴿ثُمَّ جَعَلناهُ نُطفَةً في قَرارٍ مَكينٍ﴾ [المؤمنون: ١٣]
Then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a firm lodging [i.e., the womb].
    - Saheeh International
    ﴿ثُمَّ خَلَقنَا النُّطفَةَ عَلَقَةً فَخَلَقنَا العَلَقَةَ مُضغَةً فَخَلَقنَا المُضغَةَ عِظامًا فَكَسَونَا العِظامَ لَحمًا ثُمَّ أَنشَأناهُ خَلقًا آخَرَ فَتَبارَكَ اللَّهُ أَحسَنُ الخالِقينَ﴾ [المؤمنون: ١٤]
Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allāh, the best of creators.
    - Saheeh International
    ﴿ثُمَّ إِنَّكُم بَعدَ ذلِكَ لَمَيِّتونَ﴾ [المؤمنون: ١٥]
Then indeed, after that you are to die.
    - Saheeh International
    ﴿ثُمَّ إِنَّكُم يَومَ القِيامَةِ تُبعَثونَ﴾ [المؤمنون: ١٦]
Then indeed you, on the Day of Resurrection, will be resurrected.

Use it if - you make a mistake that has a negative impact on another person (like knocking over their drink or forgetting that you were supposed to meet them). - if you want show sympathy (I’m sorry to hear your cat ran away, I’m sorry about your dad)
      Hope that helps.

    That's English like a native.

'Sorry' is extremely polite. It will certainly never offend anyone, but can make us look timid when saying it too often.. 'Sorry' has more or less replaced 'I beg your pardon' and 'come again.'

    • @abbysands9510
      @abbysands9510 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree, sorry is meant to be polite and it changes in the context. It does not necessary mean you are apologising, again it depends on the context.
      For example:
If someone came up to me and said "do you have a minute?" I would certain think that they were being extremely rude because I might be busy but if they were to say "Sorry, do you have a minute" I think better of them.
Another example, if I was waiting for someone and they arrived late and their very first response was "Thanks for waiting" I will also think they were being rude as well. I will expect them to say "Sorry, I am late I was followed by their reason."
Also, in a resturants, Nandos, etc you not expected to know the waiter's name unless they introduce it to you. But if I was a waiter and a customer came up to me and said excuse me I would think they were being rude because I might be busy. It will be better to say "Sorry, excuse me followed by your request".
I also agree that "sorry" has replaced a lot of words like "I beg you pardon" or "come again", etc.
In the UK we tend to say "cheers" but cheers itself has many meanings for example
      1) If your were to say "cheers" in a bar it would be one thing
      2) If someone gave you something maybe a gift and you said cheers it would mean thank you
      3) If you went to a shop and you bought something and as you were leaving you said cheers it will mean goodbye.
But my point is the true definition of the word "cheers" refers to a clinking of glasses that why if you were to say "cheers" to an American who never set foot in the UK I can guarantee you they think that you meant drinks in a bar.

@@abbysands9510 Very good. I used to have this unique catchphrase; 'Thanks! Cheers! Thanks!' I said it without knowing it. My catchphrase became my nickname for the staff of a fast food restaurant: "Hey look" they'd say, "Here comes old Thanks Cheers Thanks,"

I recently read an interesting article on the word sorry. It’s mainly focused on Canada but talks about British usage too: nationalpost.com/news/canada/the-use-and-abuse-of-sorry-americans-do-not-say-it-the-british-do-not-mean-it-and-canadians-overdo-it

I think all of us Brits says sorry more than any other word!
I sometimes tell my students that it is very common here to say say "sorry" instead on "hello" in a shop or bar. It's crazy.
